Metal gear solid 3 had forced feminism bullshit in a historical setting long before battlefield V and that was considered the best game in the series. It could be argued that the first walking simulators were the point and click adventure games, as in those games story was the main focus, and besides puzzles(some logical, some bullshit), there was not much to do, but to click and walk.

I disagree, solving puzzles is the point of a point and click game, the fact that you spend a lot of time walking around environments and learning the story are not the essence. The story strings together the puzzles and that can be said for any game puzzle solving game with a story attached.

Where as with a walking sim, the point is to walk around a 3D environment. The story is just a way to direct the player in what direction to walk. There can be light puzzle solving and some world interactivity, but a game that is mostly puzzle solving or puts a greater emphasis on world interactive wouldn't be fairly described as a walking simulator.

I think a good example of a game that isn't a walking simulator but features a lot of walking around in a 3D environment would be Viscera Cleanup Detail.

The game has virtual no narrative to it and is more of a 3D sandbox game then a walking simulator due to the level of interactivity there is in the world, and the fact that, while you have to walk from mess to mess, the walking isn't the main thing you are supposed to be doing its cleaning and repairing the environment, you just have to walk from spot to spot because how else will you get there?

In their defense, both forego interesting gameplay in favor of presenting a pretentious narrative

What confuses people about Death Stranding is that it's a movie game, but also in between movie cutscenes has relatively complex and lengthy gameplay segments that literally simulate the element of walking- in a way that the term "walking simulator" would apply perfectly, were it not for that term already being applied to games where you just hold forward the whole time
