Have you ever played a game that just went into an entirely different direction than you thought it would?
>looking at sales because (((frugal)))
>see singularity
>made by Raven and was only a few bucks
>plot is something something cold war rooskies go investigate some island off mainland Russian
>helo gets emp'd
>you crashland on a pretty spooky island
>your first weapon has a very slow rate of fire
>first enemies are pretty creepy looking
>jump scares within the first half hour of game play
>this is obviously a horror game where the Russians fucked up some sort of experiment and all island inhabitants have mutated
FUCK YOU YOU'RE WRONG
WE A TIME TRAVELLING PLOT NOW
BIG GUNS
TURN ENEMIES INTO DUSK LIKE THEY DRANK FROM THE FALSE HOLY GRAIL
SHOOT AT ENEMIES WITH A BULLET YOU CONTROL
ZA WARUDO
It was pretty decent, but kinda went off into the weeds in a direction I did not expect. Do you know of any other examples of this?

Great game. I would suggest Okage Shadow King for the ps2.
Few games have surprised me like that one has. The story takes a sudden and serious turn at a point that departs quite a bit from the rest of the goofy but charming tone of the game.

I remember seeing the waggle shit that was metal gear solid rising. Dismissed it as trash then gkt bored one day and downloaded the demo with massive pessimism. Now one of my favorite games of the decade and no other platinum game compares to it unless you count God Hand.

Funny, I had the same deal with Vanquish. Looked up some gameplay and it looked like your standard cover shooter, then I actually played it and holy shit best TPS I've played.

>Get Sekiro
>expect Dark Souls with extra sneaks
>first few areas playing nothing like Dark Souls (asides from the control of you chracter)
>shit, this reminds me of Tenchu
>play another hour of Tenchu: 2019 Edition
>suddendly a boss
>FUCK YOUR TENCHU SNEAKING, FUCK YOUR DARK SOULS ROLL SPAM, THIS IS OW NINJA GAIDEN, MOTHERFUCKER
It's bizzarre, hit me out of nowhere, but after that boss, when I went back to playing the "normal" game, I started only using stealth as a tool and fighting things head on with no fear. I guess that's actually the game was meant to be played.
The tutorials kinda put some importance on the "keep pressure on enemy, don't stop attacking" play style, but it's the bosses that really make that shine.
I like that, even if you're a less agressive player, and don't keep up the pressure, you can still win because they accumulate health damage that sooner or later makes the stance damage build up quite easily. But it also has the downside of taking longer, so you can only do it if you get good at dodging, something you end up doing if you're not attacking constantly.

Vanquish too. The trailers and marketing material made a terrible job. All I got was "it's faster halo".
Tried it at a friends house, bought it when I got home instantly, really cool game.

I felt Sekiro was at its worst when it was trying to Dark Souls, by that I mean the whole death=loss of experience points/money and when you're fighting monsters and non-humans like the Bull/Ogre/Headless/Whatever.

How the fuck could you think that MGRR could be 'waggle shit'? If you said it was QTE shit I could understand but it wasn't even released on any platform with motion controls. Instead of being mistaken you might just be retarded.

Environmental Station Alpha gets really cryptic and interesting in the post-game.With it shifting to non-eucledian geometry and bizzare riddles that need to be translated from gibberish after being just a solid pixelshit Metroid-clone with a bad-ending.

Dark Corners of the Earth had a very atmospheric start, but once you get a gun the game loses a lot of tension at parts. It doesn't help they have a on-rail shooting portion almost immediately after you get a gun.
That said, the most intense part of the game for me was when you were deep in the lair of the deep ones once you get the weird energy gun and the ground shakes and a ton of raving fish-men bumrush you. And this happens multiple times. Even with the strong ass gun it freaked me out.
Good game overall, but I found myself missing the early portion of the game after gunning down a ton of enemies.

maybe a weak example but the force unleashed was marketed as you getting to be vader's evil apprentice and barely into it, it forces you into the typical faggy jedi help-the-rebels bullshit instead of hunt jedi and serve the empire.

I remember the Darkness being much different than I thought and enjoyed the direction it went. Also, Kingdom under fire: Circle of Doom ended up being a wicked loot chasing/crafting hybrid that was extremely fun.

I remember the game as being disappointing, but I guess I did not give it enough time. I remember being very anti- Tim Burton art style, whatever it is.

Plenty. Most times I just went into games with absolutely no prior knowledge and that's why I was so surprised.
I thought Animal Crossing was a shitty shovelware game, some sort of "modern" take on Frogger where you actually have to help animals cross a road.
Tetris 99 I had no expectations for other than "lol haha it's a Tetris BR" and it ended up being one of the most fun games I've ever played.
Deus Ex I expected to be a mediocre meme game that's praised by /v/ because it's old, sort of like Doom is, but it actually ended up being phenomenal. Also, most Deus Ex webms, I never knew were from Deus Ex.
Paper Mario was a game I got in an emulator pack, having never heard of it. Had no idea what it could be but I was expecting a platformer, not an RPG.
Xenoblade I expected to be a lot more forgettable and generic of a JRPG than it ended up being.
Majora's Mask I expected to be just Ocarina 2.
Pokemon (I played gen 2) I expected to be a lot more complicated than it ended up being, because all I ever hear autists (here and in various discussions about the game) talk about is IVs, EVs and natures and all this shit that you have to get perfect, and needing to remember 30 types with their own strengths and weaknesses, as well as many pokemon having two types, meaning twice as complicated.
Silent Hill 2 (as well as the rest of the tetralogy) I expected to be far simpler, generic horror games, ala Resident Evil.
Ace Attorney I played with no expectations whatsoever, just remembering seeing some video of the characters yelling Objection and thinking "hey, that's kinda silly, wonder what that's from". I don't even think I knew it was a VN.
And lastly, I got one of The Legend of Spyro games for Christmas when it was new. I had never heard of it and thought it was going to be just like the original trilogy. That same Christmas, I got Enter the Dragonfly. Was a shit fucking Christmas.

The combat system was clearly made more for certain fights. It shines with the likes of Genichiro, Owl, Isshin but its very unremarkable with the ones you listed. Maybe they were leftovers from Souls or previous builds so they just reused them or they felt that Sekiro needed some variety instead of clang clang clang.

I dont know if it counts but i would say Killing Floor 2
>First game had great dark gritty sort of horror atmosphere and aesthetic
>Obvious signs it was an apocalypse
>Half eaten corpses and hanging mutilated bodies around the map
>KF2
>Shitty shiny neony aesthetic
>More of a wacky paint the town red shooter
>Skins and retarded looking cosmetics
I didnt like the futuristic direction they where taking even in some of the last updates in the first game. What where they thinking?

Maybe if they didn't shoehorn in "you have to shoot yourself to break the loop instead of shooting the villain that magically survived being shot and falling three stories" and other really stupid story decisions like that, it would be decent.

It's based on a fairly humane fictional company but damn does it allow some crazy stuff, only made better by the fact that they apparently made it easy to access and alter the games data values on purpose
That new game Jurassic World: Evolution sucks in comparison, they really tamed down what you're allowed to do
