I think it's high time that we have a Ninjaborne thread.
I would also like to extend a hearty FUCK YOU to the entire game journalist profession; You have never been more irrelevant.
So what did you like more this year, Sekiro or Nioh 2?
What would you like out of a sequel?
Would you rather have a spiritual successor instead?
Or maybe you just want a Bloodborne set in (not)Japan?

Imagine if Sekiro had something like Bloodborne's Oedon Writhe and you could regain spirit emblems fron doing perfect parries and deathblows. I think most prosthetics should also be usable without spirit emblems. You just wouldn't have access to their bonus effects or projectiles if you run out of emblems.

I enjoyed Sekiro but didn't like the focus on parry spam, especially in the late game. The game does such a good job making you feel like a ninja until you get to bosses like Corrupted Monk, that all but force you to sit there and tank every hit from an enemy two times bigger than you. It feels limiting and ghey.
DmC Devil May Cry 2: The Return of Fuck You still wins GOTY in my book even though V kinda sucks and the environments are bland.

The continuation of the good ending in a sort of reverse nioh setting, so a jap in europe or the middle east a la prince of persia, but that's really unlikely

Miyazacki hates sequels so we probably won't see one. We may see a game set in the same world and referencing Sekiro, Kuro, dragons etc. but it will be about different people.
Good it won GOTY at least. I guess they felt Sekiro legitimizes them somewhat.

You should absolutely do the DLC before the final boss. The "true boss" thing is more of a bonus boss than the true one since it only changes the ending but not much, and to fight him you must kill Vendrick. To avoid Vendrick being a bitch of a fight just collect the giant memories to lower his defense.

Just a reminder that it was mainly those shitstains that actually voted for Sekiro's win.
They also painted themselves into a corner this year. They are still trying to paint themselves as legitimate, and three games would have highlighted just how much of a joke the award. If Smash won, it would have done the other effect, and highlight how much of a joke their entire "games need to be recognized as serious art" is. Which left Sekiro and REMake 2. And the best 2019 has to offer being a return to form of 1998/2005 is a bad look, and is arguably why DMC5 wasn't nominated.
The amount of bullshit Sekiro triggered online over its difficulty was great. And the laughs provided by cripples highlighting the sham of the difficulty level debate was one of the best things to come out this year.
Also, would be neat to have it go completely Journey to the West. AKA Central Asia and India, going full Buddhist.

There was a lot of buddhist talk and imagery in Sekiro so it would be logical to follow in those steps, but wouldn't the true ending be the restoration one? Since Kuro's wish was to end immortality and that ending turns him human, has all immortals die for sure, Ashina gets rekt and it effectively marks the beginning of Meiji's reign, that would mean that Sekiro's story is truly finished and fully contained.

>but wouldn't the true ending be the restoration one? Since Kuro's wish was to end immortality
Kuro's ultimate wish was to remove the Dragon's power entirely from the world of man because of its corrupting influence. Either Severance and Purification would remove the current incarnation of the Dragon's power but there were other Divine heirs before Kuro and at least the immediately previous one achieved Severance and that still didn't prevent Kuro from being born. Moreover you had the Senpou monks manufacturing artificial Divine children and partway succeeding so unless the Dragon's power is removed completely from Japan and returned to where it comes from the same problems will still reoccur in the future.

Am genuinely sick of this meme that Souls or Sekiro or Cuphead or whatever is so difficult to the point of being unfun.
Literally the only unfun parts about those games are the poorly designed ones like Bed of Chaos or the overly cheap ones like sticking two of those sentient umberellas behind a wall in Nioh and having them one shot you just as you're rounding the corner.

Nioh 2 I think. It would be neat getting to play as a Yokai.

Less cheap deaths in Nioh(it's a wonderful game, you just die so unbelievably quickly compared to other games), more options in Sekiro. More spirit emblems, more combat arts or prosthetic slots, more weapons or movesets, stuff like that.

Actually I would like that too. Specifically a spiritual successor to the classic NES Ninja Gaiden games but in 3D this time. Both Nioh and Sekiro come dangerously close to doing this in some places but as an overall presentation they miss that mark.

The reason Ninja Gaiden 3 vanilla sucked is simply the concepts they were going for were stupid, rather then their lack of talent. They tried to make the game more gritty and story focused, by having the steel on bone mechanic feel as if you were actually cutting through bone buy button mashing, and also trying to Humanize Ryu "The Super Ninja" Those were simply dumb concepts to try and appeal to a western audience and that ruined the game, but then not much longer later NG3 Razors Edge comes out and it improves the gameplay side of things dramatically, Steel on Bone was changed from a retarded button mash mechanic to an awesome chain killing mechanic, and NG3 Razors edge ended up being a solid game. Team Ninja seems to have understood that what they went for was a bad idea. So a Ninja Gaiden 4 should at the very least be much better then NG3.
That being said even if NG4 isn't great, I'm just hoping for an NG4 announcement will be proceeded or followed by a Ninja Gaiden collection as well so NG 1 and 2 can be on PC. A NG collection is a no brainier if they wanted to hype up NG4.

I'd have more credence for that statement if a new Ninja Gaiden game actually came out after Yaiba, and it wasn't on PC, but their hasn't been a new NG game.

It's mediocre, it plays more like a God of War clone then it does Ninja Gaiden. The most amusing part of the game is that on harder modes the Ryu Boss fight can kill you in one hit, I found some enjoyable things but over all it's nothing special, then again I also found stuff to like in DMC2, you may find the game to be complete shit.
I did enjoyed the characters of Yaiba and Miss Monday, most NG characters are pretty 2 denominational. so Yaiba and Miss Monday being sarcastic assholes was kind of fun to see since they clash with the rest of the series.
I also like the theme of the game in a meta sense, Yaiba is an asshole who thinks he's better then Ryu when he clearly isn't. and his game kind of reflects that it's jank and clearly isn't as good as a normal NG game.
if your interested you could give it a shot just for the sake of curiosity, but it's nothing worth going out of your way to play. I wouldn't mind seeing Yaiba come back as a bonus playable charcter tho in a better NG game, But I super doubt he'll ever be seen again.

That attempt started way earlier in DOA Dimensions, first by making Sonya into Irene with a pseudonym. Ryu and Sonya having a pawn shop and a quiet life has always been the endgame but shit like "Ryu might be a spoopy ghost" shit ever since XBOX NG were cause for concern so here's a story where Ryu is human and unmasks himself, just like the OVA. Mekodramatic? Up the ass. Effective? Very, to the point where the ova and NEScameos alone made the wait for NG4's story worth it. The rest was shit though, as mr.Evil said : "we wanted to make a game where everyone can enjoy it" refering to the low sales of the games in the west and how it's not a common game or profitable compared to other of equal or lesser cost in western households. At least he had the balls to apologise and his team made a proper game afterwards.

It doesn't just lock you into mid stance and change how you weapons swing, it COMPLETELY replaces your equipped weapon for the duration. That is one of the genuinely good things about youkai shift. Another good thing is (some of) the youkai soul cores, which are connected to YS mode. In particular the Ippondatara core absolutely brutalizes enemies and even bosses especially if you are using it while in youkai form. The kappa core is a great one too if you're looking for defense.
I never quite figured out how the human soul cores worked though.

It's the Seven Branched Sword. It's a famous Japanese-Korean artifact and it shows up with some frequency in Japanese pop culture and entertainment. In Nioh 2's case it appears as Benevolent Grave markers which can be used to summon an NPC based on another player.
Although knowing Tecmo the dark dragon blade might actually appear in the game. In the first game the Dragon Sword and Dragon Ninja outfit both appear.

It's pretty surprising coming from Estonians. Most post-commie countries like Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine, Latvia, and so on detest commies. Balts especially, since their cultures and languages barely survived communist era. On the other hand, Estonians are desperate to be seen as Nordic and they might think that Swedish faggotry is the Nordic ideal.

Translating 日の本 as "Hinomoto" would be like translating 日本 as "Nihon/Nippon". You can see they use the same kanji, it's just read differently because they left out the の particle. It's too confusing for a casual western audience when both pretty much the same thing, so it's probably best translated as just "Japan".

I think my problem with nioh, personally, was the absurd amount of loot you got from every fucking nigger you killed, and the billions upon billions of statistics. It was a little overwhelming opening my inventory and finding fifty thousand swords with fairly limited ways of organising them.
I liked Sekiro in that it was a comparatively stripped down action title.

Superfluous loot in Nioh is meant to be sold, converted to experience/resources. Really when you die, and need a quick boost. Color denotes rarity, and level helps to quickly eyeball it without worrying about all the details.
>I liked Sekiro in that it was a comparatively stripped down action title.
Not wrong. All the shit you can do in Nioh was competing for controls, where I feel From has it down to an art for the "souls" genre. Nioh might have been better on PC, but I played it on PS4 Still curious about Nioh 2

I loved that about it too. If anything I wish that they had committed to the concept a little more firmly. Skill point grinding and and skill leveling should have been removed completely and skills should have been acquired through treasure and boss drops. And they should have more properly embraced parry/deflect earlier in the game and more completely.

Nioh just becomes too tedious having to manage loot & all the little systems of upgrading or material gathering. It's not confusing. It's just overwhelming in an action game where you're supposed to be on your toes. Like it's a dramatic change in pacing I guess. I have a hard time articulating it.

It's the RPG part of action rpg, that gets left out of the discussion because it is now all souls like, rightfully or not, due to other inclusions like bonfires or focus on bosses. I also don't mind skill grinding or leveling, part of why I like the games.
I said From has it down to an art on controls, but honestly, probably other aspects as well. Considering too much menu navigation, inventory management, will eventually take up time. And if it takes up too much, you end up losing whatever groove you might be in that's needed to tackle the level/area. Wasn't so bad in Nioh, because I only really did it when I absolutely needed a break from the action, or obviously needed to level up/fix gear or load out.

At least it's similar to souls in that you'll have a hub where you can take the time to do the things you need for upgrades or items. Maybe the menus themselves just need a rework to look like cluttered.
Another loot complaint, rare unique items dropping more than once in enemies that have no reason to have them. Sure the lore is just flavor text but it really takes away the impact of having a legendary unique sword when you find 5 other copies later.

That's the only thing that I dislike about the loot system. The special weapons should be unique.

Anon all you have to do with a loot system like that is pick and choose the weapons and armor that you like then turn the rest of it into amrita for bonus exp or sell it.
If a system (with truthfully not that many statistics) like that overwhelms you then you may unfortunately have a double digit IQ.
And as you say, simpler more bare bones titles would be better for you in this case.
I personally love that kind of shit and I can't wait for more micromanaging and what kind of sets people build in Nioh2.
You should see the builds people made on youtube, it can get pretty fucking absurd at times.
