What games do you play to get those gears turning /v/? Personally I have been playing Baba is You lately obviously I pirated it, it is very fun. I like how it starts simple but increases the complexity of the puzzles slowly.

Ive been meaning to try out Baba for a long time. It looks like a lot of fun. Havent played a proper puzzle game in a long time. Closest thing to it is Into the Breach. It's a puzzle game in the same way that chess is a puzzle. There's usually an optimal set of moves to take to win, but sometimes it requires guessing a couple turns into the future.

Which version did you get? The devs are fags transfaggotry aside and kept updating the game to change the puzzles because people kept finding "incorrect" solutions to them. Which is retarded, because open endedness and solution variety is the point of the game.

Lulu Farea is a great puzzle game. Sadly, it's haremshit and the hentai scenes are of middling quality, but the gameplay makes up for it. The entire thing is one giant continuous puzzle with a JRPG skin over it. You, the protagonist Rance Klurs, are aiming to find monstergirls to rape, inflict post-rape stockholm syndrome on, and marry because "they're not human, so it's legal!". However, you don't want to make enemies of monsterkind, since you want to win the monstergirls' hearts. So, you have a perfected a technique for defeating monsters without killing them. This means that you only get gold for defeating monsters, no EXP, and are always level 1. You gain strength purely by finding stat boosting items. There is no RNG, and you can view whether you'll win or lose before deciding to fight any enemy, save for monstergirls who are the bosses and mid-bosses. Hearts are scattered about that are instantly used to restore HP when stepped on. You can full heal at the inn at the entrance to the dungeon, but the price increases each time you rest. You must carefully plan your route to manage your resources so that you do not get permanently stuck later on, but you can save anywhere. Beating the game on normal and even getting the good ending is easy enough on a first run, but you are also scored depending on your final stats and hearts consumed. Replayability is encouraged thus so that you can find the optimal route and plan the early areas with the later areas in mind. In this way, normal mode is more like training mode for hard mode. I have yet to beat hard mode at all and can't get past the Eastern Area. You can choose to skip H scenes to speed replayability. I've put the English pre-patched game on the Vola. Rami is best girl.

There is also a sequel, Getting Married in the Demon Country Florhades. It is unfortunately not translated. I was able to beat it on normal despite this, since many of the same systems are in play and the new systems are self-explanatory, but items are vague mystery. I've put it on the Vola as well.

I imagine an easier alternative solution to a puzzle that was never considered by the developers is considered solving a puzzle """""wrong"""""

Why a developer of a single player game would sperg out over something like that is beyond me, unless it's utterly gamebreaking.

I haven't played this in what seems like a decade but I recommend Marisa and Alice's (and Trap Tower) for the PC. Yes it looks like a weeb game but it's pretty damn good, it's not really a weeb game. It's basically a clone of Mario & Wario (never played) but you can actually use a real mouse. It might seem easy but then you get to *that* part. Just remember to press f5 or whatever to speedup the game.

You know started thinking, but do people draw clear distinctions between puzzle games and classic Point & Click Adventure games from Sierra and Lucasarts?

They both have puzzles, but at the same time they don't feel like the same genre, but I can't put my finger on what is the distinction, is it the amount of backtracking you do in P&C?

Or the fact that most puzzles are just figuring what item combination works and where to use said item, which results in a lot of trial and error, and not logical deductions? But at the same time, most puzzle games can be solved with guessing, especially when you can't figure it our, you either start guessing or search on a walkthrough.

Or is it the amount of dialogue and story, as the P&C had a lot of dialogue, and were the predecessors of walking simulators, but even them games from the Layton series had a lot of dialogue.

Or maybe it's the fact that puzzle games, have mechanics that start simple, but expand as time goes on, creating more difficult puzzles. Take for instance World of Goo, were you get different goos(?) with different gimmicks and you have to use them all in order to solve the puzzle, whereas, a P&C just gives you more random items and you have to figure out where and how to use them.

Basically what is the difference between Myst and Portal? They are both in a first person perspective, and they both have puzzles that need to be solved. Yes I know one of them is a "physics based puzzle game", but these were just two random games I thought of.

>>16777833

P&C tell a story and the puzzles aren't usually of logistics rather just trying out every item combination to hear funny lines and otherwise progress

Puzzle games are essentially limitless and have clear defined rules. You could make your own puzzles if you had the tools, with an adventure game you don't know the rules so you just try everything. Playing story-driven adventure games for their puzzles doesn't strike me as something many do. Portal allows you to make your own puzzles. Myst is an escape room with different puzzles in them that aren't driven by logic. You're usually fed the solution. I think the difference is that you aren't fed the solution in Portal. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I usually think of puzzle games as the endless arcade-types, like Tetris, Puyo, Dr. Mario and whatnot. Level-based ones, like Kula World and Mister Driller also come to mind.

While Portal and Talos Principle are technically puzzle games, that's not what I really think of as ones. Same thing with Katamari, it's also a puzzle game of sorts.

Point and Clicks, however, I think were far more focused on having a story, and what this anon >>16777836 said sounds about right too.

Recently replayed Talos and Gehenna, decided to pick up the couple achievements in it I didn't have. Excellent game. Then I picked up Return of the Obra Dinn a week ago, and at first that really hooked me and I was into the idea of identifying everybody, and the surprising setting transition into high-seas fantasy solidified my interest, but after identifying about 25~ people it really started losing me. It blew it's load on the most interesting set pieces the kraken, the crab-men almost immediate, and I felt like once you got past the more obvious people who can be identified whether it's them in their work rooms/cabins or clues through dialogue figuring out who people are became really frustrating. When you have a game with a retro visual style like this but then the game is all about noticing fine details you're working against the entire point of the game. During A Bitter Cold, the numbers on the hammocks or the tattoo on the guy's arm don't even fucking exist because of LOD until you get right next to them. Add having to identify some people through nothing but process of elimination and I lost all drive to complete the game honestly and started using hints from various guides, and started outright cheating at the end. Honestly I'm glad because the ending was shit and I'd have been upset if I spent countless hours agonizing over the details to be disappointed. Nice soundtrack though.

I tried Baba but I can't get into the head space to understand it, I roadblocked hard. I am looking forward to Superliminal, I guess the kind of puzzles I really like are FPPs. I really like Zachtronic games but they're too hardcore for me, I can never seem to actually finish them so I haven't even tried the last two or three games he put out.

What's exactly so wrong with patching out unintended solutions in puzzle games? They're a glitch first and foremost and can skew with difficulty balance. It's ammo for culture warriors. They use it as though terminating cliches instead of arguments because they are more concerned with allegiance than anything else.

Or to put it in simpler terms, those screencaps show what "team" or "tribe" that dev is in and that's all they need to argue about it.

If it sounds weird that someone can dismiss an entire game based on something outside of it, that they can argue about it without even having tried it or mentioning anything from it's actual content, just remember that they attribute merit based on origin, not content.

Anyone with some basic self-awareness would be extremely uncomfortable when looking at the progressive fucktards and seeing them using the exact same logic, but logic has no place in a cultural war.

>>16778254

>to show others why they hate said things

Couldn't you just write it, instead of saving a pic to do it for you? Because you run the risk of giving mixed messages where it seems that you hate the game when your posting shit about the author instead and anyone reading that might think the game itself is shit and not even pirate it.

>why play things you obviously wouldn't like?

Unless you're being paid to make a review on them or you can actually extract some fun out of seeing how bad it is, that's a legit question.

If there's unintended multiple solutions to a puzzle it's not a puzzle. It's that simple. As your quote stated all the solutions that got removed were once that made it easier, not the opposite. Having more than one solution also makes it easier to crack. They're not glitches fine, but they're still unintended solutions. The point of playing a game is usually the find the intended solution. Since only the easily found ones are removed, seems to me like you are too stupid to find the unintended unremoved solutions :^)

>But he didn't dismiss an entire game or disregard it's merit you retarded

He is blatantly implying that it's a good thing someone didn't paid for the game specifically because of what the dev posted on twitter. Don't be disingenuous, anyone can see just what exactly is being said here.

If the ideology of the dev is more important than the quality of the game when deciding if you buy it or not, then clearly the merit of the dev's tribe matters more to that poster than the merit of the game itself.

If you're just gonna pirate everything, that's a different situation, but if you're going to buy based on merit but you put ideology over the game itself, you're on the wrong board.

>>16778310

>If there's unintended multiple solutions to a puzzle it's not a puzzle.

Isn't the point of puzzles that you're supposed to get to a solved state while being constrained by specific rules? If that's the case, why would it matter how many solutions there are to get there if you're still bound by the same rules and reach the same solved state?

A jigsaw puzzle does not allow for this kind of thing since the jigs only fit in one specific way but there's plenty of cases like those 3D "separate these pieces from each other" puzzles that sometimes can be solved in different ways.

I'm also reminded of The Incredible Machine that gives you puzzles to solve with a few pieces, however with clever planning you can sometimes come up with an entirely different solution that doesn't use all the pieces.

Or an even better example would be some of Zachtronics puzzles where you can solve a problem but afterwards you compare your solution with other players and see who got the most efficient one.

Are those not puzzle games just because you can solve them in different ways?

Lemmings occasionally does this in an interesting way. In the second game "Crazy-3" has you need to time bombers. You have five bombs but can only use two. You also get two builders and these help with the timing aspect, but you can do it without those if you're precise. The trickiest part is the second bomb has to be timed so the lemming is falling so he instantly detonates. If not there's enough of a window for the lemming prior to get past during the detonate animation and fall to death.

>Couldn't you just give me your biased perspective of it rather than unbiased jpegs?

Fair argument, but here's the rebuttal:

1) JPEGs aren't unbiased, you can crop pretty much anything you want in any order that suits you to convey a specific message. Even Twitter posts, when taken out of context, could suffer the same.

Recently there was someone reposting twitter posts about a furry that lost his hands to chemical burns and was claiming that it was intentional in order to undergo a surgery to replace them with proesthetic paws.

It took another Anon actually looking into it to see the story was legit and the guy did had a problem with his hands that eventually led to his situation (in a stupid way regardless).

This didn't stop the first Anon from reposting his "unbiased jpegs" of Twitter posts in the first place or even afterwards because they were handy images to rile up hatred against furries and gays, regardless of how inaccurate they actually were.

Even if the images are "unbiased", the context they are posted in often isn't.

2) Using pictures and infographs to arguing diminishes your ability to do so yourself. When someone challenges what you're showing, if you're not capable of defending it, it will seem like something you made up, even if it's true.

Plenty of Anons end up having their very well researched infographs ignored because they don't actually understand the data in them and buckle under pressure when asked to fundament what they are showing.

A picture often helps, but it's not an actual argument.

3) If you're going to say why you hate something, you're giving your opinion. "unbiased jpegs" are not your opinion, they may be the reason behind it but they are factual and therefore not an opinion.

Why the false dichotomy? You can't choose what to buy based on both? Putting ideology over merit means buying a shit game that panders to your ideology as well. The reverse, not buying a good game based on ideology, just means you don't want to support fags. You can both not support transtrenders and not buy shit games that support your ideology at the same time. It's like you lack even the slightest concept of nuance.

But you can put the pieces in place in any order you choose. That alone could be considered solving the puzzle in different ways. For instance, there is the ideal solutiong of starting with the corners, then edges, then working your way towards the center based on the easiest to identify pieces. >you can crop pretty much anything you want in any order that suits you to convey a specific message.

This is neither here nor there. It is always up to the person as to whether or not they need additional context. For some people, seeing the dev retweet LGBT stuff in general is enough. Doug Tenapel pulled out of Comicsgate just because a figurehead put a rainbow up for pride month (which was pretty dumb tbh) but a seemingly petty reason like that is all it takes for some people. As you can see ITT there are anons questioning and providing additional context for the jpegs in question.

>Even if the images are "unbiased", the context they are posted in often isn't.

>It took another Anon actually looking into it to see the story was legit and the guy did had a problem with his hands that eventually led to his situation (in a stupid way regardless).

>Using pictures and infographs to arguing diminishes your ability to do so yourself. When someone challenges what you're showing, if you're not capable of defending it, it will seem like something you made up, even if it's true.

<Evidence isn't an argument it just supports arguments

No shit. We're talking about evidentiary standards here. Not how to form a sound argument. Once again, it is up to anons to decide how much context is enough. If they are fine with just the evidence that is that. If they want anon to elaborate upon and argue for his position you can bet they'll do it in a heart beat.

>If you're going to say why you hate something, you're giving your opinion. "unbiased jpegs" are not your opinion, they may be the reason behind it but they are factual and therefore not an opinion.

This sounds like autism. Which is fine, we're all on the spectrum here I assume. While you are correct that the jpegs aren't directly anon's opinion most people can infer what he thinks when he posts them. I have to say, once again, that if anons are not satisfied with just jpegs, with inferring, and want to see him say it in his own words they will do so. You often see anons are quick to call you out for using buzzwords. Not just because it makes you stand out and look like a fag, but also because they aren't your own words.

In reality 2, since a decided voter switching to the undecided camp by not voting also counts as switching allegiance, but knowing Layton the obvious answer can't be it so probably all 3, if people decide to not vote.

But in reality our fact checkers have found decisive proof that that stronk independent womyn actually has a 99% chance of winning and candidate A is a rapist.

The problem is that it fucks up the trick by stating that the election has 1000 voters. Not eligible voters, voters. That means 1000 people who actually voted.

I got the version on GOG, but it must be a later release because I don't remember the "wacky" doctor/professor mascot in the original games - and the initial spate of machines don't feel nearly as well designed or paced as the first game - like it's a stand-alone expansion calling itself a sequel trying to just cram in more content, but having already used up it's good ideas in the first two titles. Maybe I should play more, but that put me off.>>16778148

Been playing The Witness, and it's probably the hardest puzzle game I've encountered. The puzzles are fair and logical, no bullshit, but sometimes really obscure and/or abstract. It's been a while since I had to use a notebook and pen to play a game, but it's good stuff. I think it's part of the game to make you feel frustrated yet enforce patience for a good outcome. The game is in a somewhat open world with a variety of puzzles everywhere so if you're hitting a brick wall somewhere you can do something else and come back later, when it clicks.
