Other recent news…
The first part of the Final Fantasy VII Remake is confirmed to be a timed exclusive for PS4. FFVIIR part 1 will be available on PS4 March 3rd, 2020. It will remain timed exclusive for a full year until March 3rd, 2021 when it will presumably release on PC, Xbox One, PS5, Xbox Scarlett.
Also MLB The Show is coming to additional platforms starting in 2021, so that series won't be exclusive to PlayStation anymore.

When you expect nothing but are still disappointed. It was mildly better than the last two, since it had actual non-indie reveals, but still not worth existing.
Babylon's Fall looks washed out to the point it looks like returning color to the world should be the gimmick, but there's no sign of such a gimmick.

And there's no way of telling if Square Enix can actually commit to completing the entire FFVII remake project, how much money they will spend, or how long it will take to develop the entire thing. It might end up incomplete, like the Half Life 2 episodes or Sonic the Hedgehog 4 episodes.

Well, let's look at things already. The tech demo was back in 2005, when there was no remake "officially" planned. Then, sometime during the development and release of XIII and Dissadia back in '09/'10, they actually started developing the concepts of what the remake would entail for it's battle system, and didn't "finalize" the actual groundwork of the game until 2015 (When the remake was officially announced to the public, and when "full" development actually started).
So, about…say…8 years of sitting on their ass brainstorming and 5 years of actual development, so 13 years total, just to get the first third of a 22 year old game that originally took 3 years to make.
Now, considering that they already "laid the groundwork", development of parts 2 and 3 should take about half that time.
So, 26 years to development the complete remake to a (By the time all of this is finished) 36 year old game that originally took 3 YEARS to develop.

It's took five years for the first game and should take half that for each subsequent game in the tetraology. So it should be done releasing around 2027-2028. But that's a best case scenario. The next playstation will be out by then, and the game will likely slowed down for simultaneous release on PS4/PS5. There's also post game release DLC and shit cut from the game that won't be out until they release it in a collector's edition. Just look at KHIII. Probably won't be done until 2032.

Both that, all the other exclusives making their way into PC and the fact that many of their executives are teasing this with saying they'll bring more games to other platforms and that consoles are niche, makes me think Sony is going to make their own competitor to Steam soon.
Considering the 2021 date for FFVII reboot and MLB The Show, I think they'll stay quiet for most of 2020 to drive PS5 sales and then they'll release their own PC digital platform to get a slice of that market.

They peaked and they know it, the casual market is mostly on mobile now, where they have a prettydecent market share on, and that the games there are completely different from what we see in traditional devices.
They know that they need to expand their products to expand their company.
Playstation is Sonys bread and butter, their investors want more growth and the 2nd biggest market for videogames expensive videogames they produce out of their own pocket outside their own platform is an open platform.
Streaming is still unproven and Stadia failed miserably so they won't bet all their eggs on that.
Shit's been moving that way ever since 7th Gen proved both that third party games were becoming more popular than exclusives ever could and that proprietary architectures were a detriment to said third party publishers/developers.
They know not everyone will move to PC and that they're still somewhat difference audiences so they'll make this move slowly but surely, either way they'll make money.

That's a good point. I've had a PS4 for about four years now but I've rarely used it. The only upcoming PS4 game I'm really interested in is Dreams, but it'd be a shame if a creation tool like that was limited to console. I would not be surprised if Sony decides to publish Dreams on PC by 2021 or so. I might hold off on buying Dreams for PS4…
