I'm thinking of playing through Chrono Trigger sometime, and I wanted to know what the differences are between the three versions, as in what does each version have to offer that the other don't?

PS version has really annoying loading times every time you open the menu, but it adds some anime FMVs. DS version has the FMVs plus no load times.

PS1 version has added FMVs but also suffers obnoxious load times for whatever reason. DS has a more accurate translation (which pisses off some people due to "killing the charm" the SNES script has for them), the PS1's FMVs with no load issues, the ability to move the menu entirely to the bottom screen and free up the top visually, and some new content that is honestly rather bad compared to the ported material (said new content being optional). Personally I prefer DS.

Playstation has some FMV cutscenes, bad load times and the music isn't quite right. DS has the same cutscenes, and the music is mostly faithful to the original, but there are a couple subtle differences. DS also has a retranslated script which some find blasphemous, but it's fine IMO.

SNES version is best.

PS version has an anime intro which you can just watch on YouTube.

DS version has shitty tiny font for all text, two horribly designed bonus dungeons that suck, and a bonus final boss that is a cameo of Chrono Cross's final boss and which vaguely ties both games together a little more.

SNES version has a really awful script which is only propped up by scalper kikes who would even defend Working Design diarrhea

PS version is the same as SNES version except with loading times and some animated FMVs

DS version has a new script, the PS1 FMVs and some bland new content.

All versions are inferior to the bugfix and uncensoring patch.

You're not gonna get a vanilla experience better than this.

So, the long of the short is that:

SNES

>The original experience

<Requires a patch for a proper translation and to remove censorship

PS1

>Exactly the same as the SNES version

>FMV cutscenes

<Distorted music

<Load times

NDS

>Everything from the PS1 version (Sans load times)

>Re-translation and removal of censorship

-Bonus content tying the game to Chrono Cross

<Lowest resolution

<Altered color palette (See pic)

<Altered music

All signs point to avoiding it like the plague: http://archive.ph/MIL3Z

So, the version "rating" is:

SNES (Patched) > NDS > PS1 > SNES (Original) > Android/iOS > PC

That's why early GBA games are so saturated, since it's hard to see anything on that unlit screen.

I've been planning to replay Chrono Trigger lately, now with the Bugfix+Uncensored patch, but when I play it, this black bar appears at the bottom of the screen during normal areas; it doesn't appear in menus or world map. I've noticed that I'm not the only one who's had this problem, so does anyone know how to get rid of it? I'm using the latest version of Snes9x.

They probably mean they took all instances of characters names being written in all caps and made them normal instead, but I'm not interested in downloading and patching a game I don't feel like playing at the moment just to prove it.

Translation autists conveniently forget to mention hardware limitations of the day. The Japanese language is such that it can convey more information in less characters and thus less bytes of ROM space. If Squaresoft wanted a more faithful transliteration then it would've meant adding more ROM chips into the cart's PCB, and the game would've retailed for $200-300 like a Neo-Geo game used to. This issue is no problem for ROM hackers since you can expand a .rom file to 10 gigs if you wanted at zero manufacturing cost.

For any Working Designs game it was because Working Designs was fucking cancer.

I can’t believe no one is mentioning how problematic some of the (thankfully) censored content was in some of these games. It’s a good thing that responsible localizers protect the audience from sexism, transphobia, etc. :^)

><Altered color palette (See pic)

That might actually be an unintended effect of this:

https://higan.readthedocs.io/en/stable/interface/higan/#the-settings-menu

>Video Emulation applies various effects to the emulated console’s video output to reproduce some behaviours that aren’t technically part of the console itself:

>[. . .]

>Colors simulates the way a console’s display device differs from modern computer monitor’s colour reproduction. In particular, it simulates the slightly-different gamma correction used by the Super Famicom, the dim, washed out colours of the original Game Boy Advance, and the pea-green display of the original Game Boy.

I don't know much about emulation or the SNES hardware, but apparently the gamma on it was unusual and it makes emulated games look washed-out. It could be the developers just pasted in a ROM dump and called it a day without comparing the two versions, and the less saturated palette is a result of it being displayed by a DS renderer instead of an SNES one.

It's still Masamune. It's one of those things that'll never get fixed because the initial bad translation is too iconic and people who grew up with it would throw a shitfit. See: Frog's faux Shakespearean accent getting toned down to mildly antiquated speech to match everyone else in 600 AD, or Magus saying "You got whacked cuz you're weak."
