Some of you may defend it, but THIS FUCKING THING is the cause of so many problems. Let me explain:
Right now, I'm playing Half-Life on Dreamcast, and I made an observation while playing the game: It is absolutely tough to play. Now, before some of you jokers start coming in here and going "Well, what do expect trying to play a PC designed FPS?" That has nothing to do with it. First of all, the only initial "problems" with transferring a PC shooter over the Dreamcast as far as the actually "aim and shooting" mechanics is just having to deal with the 5% deadzone on the Dreamcast control stick, learning how to play a shooter "Southpaw" style, and just heaving to learn to get around the really tiny reticule. Everything else is exactly the same. Where the difference comes in, HOWEVER, is that you need to take your finger off of the control stick to crouch, jump, and switch weapons.
This is where everything makes the difference.
With the introduction of the Dualshock, players were given six buttons that they're fingers will be on the entire time without having to stop moving and looking. With all six of these buttons, you're able to (1) shoot, (2) crouch, (3) jump, (4) zoom (If the game allows it), (5) switch weapons, and (6) whatever extra action you want (Basic action, prev/next weapon, switch a different type of weapon, use the alt. fire, etc.). And, games are increasingly "streamlining" the process to accommodate those six buttons.

>i was playing a game the other day in a completely obtuse way different as it was designed, but that's definetely NOT the issue here
>the problem is that one day companies made a gamepad design so versatile and useful, that now everyone uses that design
Not only you're saying retarded shit, buy your logic basically has 2 parts with no connection between them whatsoever.
Go to sleep m8, you kinda need it.
But talking serious, the main problem is not the pad design, but the fact that almost no one else takes risks anymore, especially in changing the way people play games. It has nothing to do with the fact that the PS original design proved to be basic but very useful design, but that no company came out with a more radical way of playing.
I think Nintendo was the last to start a trend like that with the motion controller, but i want to see even more weird shit in the future, and not just from them.

We haven't had six face buttons since the Duke. Controllers like Xbone Elite are coming out with squeeze triggers now. I wonder why six face buttons haven't returned. I did enjoy using Steam's owltits as a trackpad in FPS games. Too bad most games that could benefit it can only do either gamepad or KB+M mode. Also the trackpad was worthless outside of FPS.

I agree, his main complaint is that the controller worked better and allowed more functions to be done simultaneously so devs figured they would try to use that button space as efficiently as possible. I guess they should have made controllers with less functions to prevent that.

Well yes they have been dumbed down, but I don't think that's the fault of any one controller, it's the nature of controllers in general. They will never have as many buttons as a keyboard, you'll never have 1-0 keys to quickly flip through weapons for example. No controller could accommodate that many unique inputs without being unwieldy. Blaming the dual shock for the dumbing down of shooters and games in general is entirely misguided in my opinion.

I mean things like gyro and two analog sticks give you roughly three sets of analog input to work with. Yet most games stick with two. FPS ports use gyro on Switch as a second right analog stick substituting for mouse on PC. Three analog could be easily implemented in a control scheme if both left and right analogue sticks could be used for something else. Keep in mind that putting your thumb on analog sticks means you won't focus that much on digital pad and face buttons outside of one press hotkeys. I don't know many games that would benefit from three analog inputs outside of flight sims maybe.

Yeah I'm not sure either, honestly as far as gyro controls go I'm not really sure what to say about them as I've never used them myself before. So I can't really comment on how exactly they would work out, I know a lot of anons say that the gyro controls on the wiiu I believe made fine aiming in splatoon better or something but I can't really imagine how that would feel so I can't really speculate on it personally.

Assuming for a gamepad you never take either thumb off the analog sticks, and on a keyboard never move any finger off the key it's resting on (with the exception of W and S), isn't that actually two more buttons than you'd get on PC?
I mean, I know you can rest your middle finger on the scroll-wheel but I never actually see anyone do that because it's not as uncomfortable. Much more interesting are the two side buttons most gaming mice have that always rest conveniently under the thumb, but games tend to ignore them in favor of pleasing the lowest common denominator so they wouldn't count.

I think I know a Wiiu game that uses three analog axises. Though right stick rotated the ship, accelerate, and decelerate. They could have been mapped to triggers and buttons like the last games. Also gyro aiming can work but you have to look at the gamepad to fine aim. If you could aim gyro without the gamepad FOV then this game could have been saved. Maybe if the right stick could control your acceleration and deceleration with analog precision in an open map. But I digress.

Yakuza is just japanese GTA no? I don't particularly like those story-driven games. I like some of the more arcade style GTAs but only to drive in really. They really just made the game less fun to walk in with the newer ones. You walk so goddamn slow. I prefer games that I can actually play like Mr Heli. I still have an almost untouched copy of Mafia 2. The AI is retarded in these type of games I don't know how they can ever be immersive to anyone.

Didn't really like Dark Souls all that much. It's too slow. It's like a slow DMC or Bayonetta. I prefer having more control over my character. It gets me more invested. My reasoning was always something like that. I prefer games that are responsive. The restrictions in Dark Souls just made the game infuriating and more a test of my patience than my reaction times. Matte grey was a Nintendo thing, and it only lasted two generations. Most consoles have been black. N64 was black. NGC was purple (promotional - had a black standard color option), Wii/U were white, Switch is black.
People like black consoles because when they are dark colors, they're easy to hide in your entertainment center so that guests you invite over don't notice it as readily and immediately identify you as a humongous faggot and developmentally stunted manchild.

And then on the Switch itself, Doom 2016 gives you the option to turn on the gyro in addition to standard stick camera controls, though you gotta' fuck with settings to make it useful.
More shooters should make waggle an optional thing at this point, it can totally work.

Steam controller's trackpad works pretty well in RTS and 4X games too. Playing WH40K DoW2 is surprisingly comfortable on it. It's only downside is that you need to have steam running for it to work. Some extra buttons would be nice too.
I hope there will be another version released or some company will rip off the design. I can't play games using mouse and keyboard due to carpal tunnel syndrome. Steam controller is the only option for strategy games, and better than other controllers when it comes to isometric RPGs/action and FPS games.

If this thread is just for voicing controller or other input devices frustrations, then let me just say concave (bowl top) analog sticks are cancer and Microsoft destroyed PC game controllers big time. Even DS4 has some of it going on. Only terrible chinkshit controllers and Nintendo controllers have dome tops (unless you mod your controllers anyway), and Nintendo controllers aren't made for PC use (although you can buy chinkshit adapters to maybe use them on PC). Another complaint I have is that the Gamecube controller is more comfortable in my hands for many 3D games (that aren't better played with KB+M) but is missing just a few adjustments to make it good for a general video game controller, and nobody is making clones of it like that. I'm seriously considering getting those wireless Gamecube-style Switch controllers and trying to use it on my PC. You would think somebody would just make them ready to use. Finally, fuck Microsoft's shitty controller API not supporting many more axes for analog buttons. Even now, years after quitting Windows, Microsoft's shitty mistakes haunt me indirectly by limiting the hardware manufacturers.

The Master System controller was exactly the same thing, except the pause button was located on the fucking console for some reason. That little screw-on arcade stick was a neat gimmick, but didn't work as well as Sega had hoped and after a bit of time would start to hurt your thumb from the repeated focused pressure. You could take it out and there was a little rubber cap you could insert - but that thing would only last about two weeks before falling out and getting lost - so you had this odd divot in the middle of your D-pad.
The big square shape of the D-Pad didn't help either, since the inputs had trouble registering when moving across the directional. I personally didn't really have an issue with it as a kid, but it's bad design and I get why a lot of people don't like it.
The Sega Genesis controller (especially the six button pad) was godly in general, and especially in comparison to the SMS controller.

He's right though, the dualshock is tiny because it's made for yellow hands. My hands start cramping after less than 1 hour of use because of how small it is. If you have no problem using it is probably because you aren't white and probably a trap too.

It certainly killed any possibility of a somewhat original design ever fucking coming out, which is why I'll always applaud Nintendo, regardless of how shit some of their attempts can be. 360/Xbone controllers are just dualshocks with slightly different stick placement, and so is the Switch Pro controller. God forbid they try something new. Hell, the only good thing the Gamecube controller had, the 8-directional ridges, will never be put on a modern controller despite being a small change and immensely useful for numerous genres, because the Dualshock doesn't do it and therefore it is bad and not necessary.

The people that got a Wii never played anything else, except maybe Candy Crush. The retards that got a 360 or PS3 are the ones that still play games and are "real gaymers" who love Skyrim and Bioshock Infinite, those are the ones still playing games.
