This is pretty much my favorite Square-Enix series followed by Mana and the Quintet games. I've been replaying through some old games and was pleased with how enjoyable they are. I personally prefer Dragon Quest Monsters games over Pokemon.

I haven't completed many of them, but that is going to change soon. I'd say VII is my favorite, so far. I'm currently playing 4-6 so maybe that'll change. I picked up Dragon Quest Heroes super cheap and it is great. Getting to play as characters from previous games and seeing them in that type of 3d environment is charming. I really hope to see DQ X get a single player NA release, but I doubt this will ever happen.

I have never played a mainline Dragon Quest game. I have a DS, PC, SNES and a PS2. Sell me on an entry point and I'll give it a try. Also post more old-school character art. I love that stuff.

Strangely enough I find 2D mode with the stronger monster draconic quest more fun than the 3D version. Maybe because it forces you to deal with random encounters and prevents you from single targeting individual monsters.

11s on Switch maybe. Though the game is retarded easy without stronger enemies enabled. Even then that'll be tough to anyone not knowing the mechanics. Dragon Quest III on SNES (need a translation patch) would be a best choice honestly. Then have them play the origional Dragon Warrior on NES. Dragon Quest VIII on 3DS would be an ideal middleground if you can stomach the MIDI arrangements. But then they censored Jessica's outfits. So the PS2 version of VIII is the most ethical way to go.

I mean it's still a DQ game, and as such its not terrible but it does alot of things that really kill the fun on account of it being so ridiculously easy. The combat gets difficult by the end game, but for more then 3/4th of the game the battles are so easy that it will make you feel like your suffering from narcolepsy. And even if your are "New" to the series, I don't think this is a good way to be introduced to the games. In fact I'd more likely to recommend it if you are a loyal fan then if you are a new player on account that a fan will be a bit more forgiving because of the fanservice and nostalgia the title relies on. I mean there is Draconian mode options but it "tough enemies" actually bumps the difficulty way higher then a traditional DQ game so its in a strange limbo. Then again, I'm the kind of person would would recommend people play Dragon Warrior on NES first because its such a simple yet elegant game that at under 10 hours playtime it really does alot despite being so basic and you end up with a deeper appreciation for the fundamentals of the first quintessential JRPG and how those traditions are honored even in the modern games. Hell even Akira Toriyama's sprite work in the original NES games still is charming.

The localizations of the DS versions are fucked. So you're better off flashcarting with patched translations if you can't read Japanese. It's full of illegible accents and no party chat in some games.

I beat the DS version and it seemed fine for me, just enjoy the game anon, you won't find any problems with it unless you purposely go looking for them, made up or not.
But word of warning there is a sneaky anti-piracy feature in the game where you cant leave the boat at the beginning of the game (I learned that the hard way).
You'll have to APfix the game or make sure you get a patched version of it to avoid that watery purgatory.

Don't be a pleb just start at the beginning. The GBC version of Dragon warrior 1 and 2 is pretty good and has a bit more content than the snes version. Just pick one of those.
Dragon quest 1 is simple and classic and not very long. You can play the nes version if you want but you might as well play one of the version listed above since they cut out a decent amount of grinding.

The SNES remake of DQ3 is the best one in general, and a great one to start with. The DS remake of DQ4 is also a good entry level game, but the translation is gay. DQ2 is the only shit one imo. Tons of grinding, nonexistant story, aimless wandering an open world once you get the boat. You can pass on that unless you REALLY like grind-heavy, obtuse, old-school RPGs.

Another question that came to mind in the middle of the night. If Dragon Quest Builders 3 will have it's plot based on Dragon Quest III then where would it take place. It's closer to 3D Terraria but even that isn't quite correct. It has a pretty solid campaign, maybe a little too much so if you're looking for a pure sandbox experience. If you're looking for an action RPG with exploration and building then it's great.
>I'm thinking of going straight to Heroes 2
That's not a bad decision but do try out Heroes 1 afterwards though. I found it to be rather fun it just doesn't really have many RPG elements to it.

I dredged up my old copy of Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2 and beat it a couple days ago. I'm terrible at these sorta games so I end up just tanking things with beefcakes sporting Hit Squad. It was enough to get me through the main game but the end game content has kicked it up a notch. I love these sorta games; I would play Megaten more of I didn't get bounced so hard. Any suggestions for a decent monster as a dedicated healslut? I'm currently rocking a King Healslime but he's starting to show his age.

Oh goodness here we are with someone actually speaking some damn sense. DQM will alwayd have a special place in my heart as it was the first game I bought with my own money, and I am eternally assblasted that we will never get another title in the states and that there seems to be no word on a new release in Japan.

You can reset skills if you mess up, but it has a cost of gold per type and resets the entire section, so if you mess up like unlocking a move for knives you don't like, you'll pay a bunch to remove ALL the knives moves learned and get all those points back to redo. Don't worry, I've only had to reset once after unlocking dual-wield for a character I have use whips only to find you can't use two whips at once. It cost like 10,000+ coins but was deep into the game and it was to get 20 points back, so it wasn't a major loss.
The only other thing is to check a town for recipe books before buying gear at the shops if you can. You might find a recipe for an item in-store you can make for "free" and possibly better stats than dropping thousands of coins.

That's because monsters didn't sell well here. Japan gets to enjoy various creature collector RPGs, but Westerners have a strict mindset that only Pokemon should exist and any other IP deemed to be "pokemon-esque" has no room in their gaming libraries.
>"This is just a Pokemon ripoff! I'll just get Pokemon because it's called Pokemon and has Pikachu/Charizard."
Nevermind that some of the shit current Pokemon games boasts as "innovation" has already been done by Dragon Quest Monsters and other games in the genre during the 00s at much better executions.
DQM was already fully 3D and the monsters chase the player on the field back on the DS when Pokemon was still in 2D.

I almost wonder if the reason DQM Joker 3 didn't get brought over was to keep western Pokemon fans from rioting. There was some serious resentment back in the day over using your own mons to get around being replaced with the Ride Pokemon system. Imagine if they saw a game on the same platform where you can ride every single monster in your collection…

DQM since the GBA had always pushed the envelope for the genre while GameFreak is lazy and comes up with gimmicks.
Western Pokemon fans are over zealous and hate other creature collector RPGs. They get to enjoy sharing space with Pokemon in Japan but Western Pokefags want Pokemon to have a monopoly of the genre.
