I'm a big fan of Warhammer 40k, but I have no fucking clue about Warhammer fantasy, after playing DoW and DoW2 to death, I decided I wanted to give Total Warhammer a try. What's the best way of playing total warhammer? Does it help with the lore like DoW1 does?

Probably does a better job showing off the lore of the setting better than any other warhammer game, though if you're only interested in the setting then I suggest just looking for pdf's of the army books from the table top

I like 40k's loke, but admittedly, I'm not into the tabletop at all. I think some of the games, particularly the original DoW gave me a feeling with RTS that have never been topped, specially with how ridiculous the scale of the fights can get. I want both good gameplay and good lore exposition.

The distinction should be made that the Total Warhammers are warhammer fantasy, not 40k. I personally disliked the Total Wars since after Shogun 2 so I don't believe WaWa will be to your liking, especially since WaWa 1 and 2 look like the same game with additional factions.
Also I'd recommend against considering the battlefleet gothic games. They look and sound great, but the AI is shit tier, the campaigns are terribly repetitive with infinitely spawning invasions(no Dark Crusade type map where factions have defined borders, you just have to eat a billion fucking invasions of the same shit tier two or three mission types until you get to the actually fun story mission where you stop a faction's invasion) and nids are absurdly OP to play as.

I've only played 1 so I might be wrong here, but WaWa2 and by extension the inevitable 3 looks like an expansion pack with more factions so go for it I guess. You should be aware that Total War AI has been shit for a long time(Even in the TA games I liked like Medieval 2) and I doubt that changed in WaWa2.

The only time I can recall that total war AI was decent was Shogun 2, especially in sieges. I would say that the wawa ai is a little bit better than in most of the other games, if only because it has a few more things to juggle and seems to shit itself less often

Well, yes, and no. Warhammer Total War occurs in a version of Warhammer Fantasy that straight up ended. I won't get into the aspergery details, but they basically rebooted Warhammer Fantasy, and it is universally despised now. However, it is so reviled that they just recently announced that they're rewinding time and going back to before the reboot. Nobody knows exactly how the world is going to continue. If they don't pull any more gay shit, then yes, you'll get fairly well-acquainted with the lore.
It's worth noting that Warhammer Total War 3 will eventually come out, and they will also wrap everything together like they did in the second game. So if you're the kind of person who waits to play a game until all of the content releases, you can safely wait before playing. That would give you better chances at a better cracked version, anyway.

you know I would recommend this as well but last i checked the norsca DLC for the first game hasn't been cracked. Norsca happens to be my favourite faction as well which is a real flick to my balls.
I mean dont get me wrong creative assembly are a bunch of cunts but whatever team they got to make the warhammer games seem to genuinely love the setting, certainly more than GW does. I just hope the third one has a proper nurgle faction.

Usually games have a pre-configured one. Every Paradox game has one, Total Wawa II has one, I think Payday 2 also does. So it annoys me that there doesn't appear to be one for Rome II, I want to check out if they actually did "fix" the game or if all they did was add women.
