It's worth playing at least once just because it's so different.
If nothing else it's a genuinely original and new kind of game you've never seen before. The highlights for me were the Mads/You Know Who storyline, the feeling of "oh thank fuck someone put a generator here, let me give him 150 likes, the feeling of overcoming the environment, the vast array of weird gadgets and weapons and the base gameplay was pretty fun but did start to get a tiny bit repetitive by the final few chapters. What did you think of it my fellow incel mass shooters?

It's like old MGS. 11 hours of cutscenes, the game and story is actually finished. Bear in mind though there's a sizeable chunk in the middle 20-30 hours where it's sparse. It's like 4 hours of cutscenes in the first 10 hours, then 2 hours of cutscenes in the next 20 hours and then 5 hours of cutscenes right at the end.

I was OP of the most recent Death Stranding thread on vch. Here are my thoughts.
PROS
-Mads Mikkelsen gives one of the best performances in video game history
-Good father/son story which can hit harder than God of War 2018 or Yakuza 6
-Good controls and animation work for the main character
-You have to pay attention to the terrain and plan your route, you simply can't ride a bike or sprint up a steep cliff-face as though it were Skyrim
-Beautiful visuals that remind me more of Iceland instead of a post apocalyptic America
CONS
-Gameplay is weak (think MGS Peace Walker or Phantom Pain side ops and nothing but that), all you do is deliver packages with certain stipulations and requirements (deliver in a certain timeframe, carry a certain amount of weight, cargo can't get damaged more than 50%, don't submerge the cargo etc).
-The walking mechanics appear in depth at first, but you can hold both L2 and R2 and you'll stay upright most of the time even maintaining your balance if you stumble over rocks, then you can acquire vehicles and ziplines which make the walking mechanics irrelevant. In post game I set up a zipline network that spanned the entirety of the eastern region and most of the central region which makes delivering a joke since I can avoid all terrain, BT and MULE enemies
-Father/son story is buried underneath convoluted and nonsensical science fiction, not fun or wacky as it is in Metal Gear, scifi tries to set up the world too much and most of it is laughably bad, especially when you read the in game mails and interviews
-Rope/stick theme is poorly thought out
-Worst boss fights than any of the Metal Gear games, too easy when materials, blood bags, weapons spawn in for you or are dropped in by other players for you to pick up. All boss fights are bullet sponges with limited attack patterns. I only somewhat liked the Vietnam battlefield setpiece against Mads Mikkelsen since you can hide in some foliage and sneak attack his soldiers from behind with the strand rope.
-Some weak cinematography at with a bizzare choice of low angle shots in certain situations which can make a few good characters appear too devilish
-Cutscenes with the odradeck sensor picking up BTs every time you enter or leave a timefall zone gets annoying, as well as the numerous cutscenes upon entering a private room and taking a shower
Overall rating: ★★ out of 5 stars
>>16766416
Part of the charm is connecting online and interacting with what tools and equipment other players leave behind or what you leave for other players to use, getting together materials and cumulatively building a large roadway together, or a sigh or relief when you encounter a shelter someone else build which can repair any damaged cargo containers you're carrying. You could play offline but I think the experience would be worse because the goal of this game is to come together and help others. Think of Journey on PS3 where you could interact with one other person online and work together to reach the end of the story, but Death Stranding works on a much larger scale with more players.

You play as Sam Porter Bridgers, a delivery man with certain special abilites like coming to life after dying and he has high DOOMs levels which allow him to sense BTs (beached things, the inky black ghosts with umbilical cords/souls trapped in the world of the living, the whales and squids). He's got a BB (bridge baby) which allows normal people to sense BTs if their DOOMs levels aren't high enough. Sam can sense BTs without a BB but with a BB he can actually see BTs. BBs are harvested from the bodies of a braindead/vegetative women about 5 months into the pregnancy and the BBs are considered tools rather than normal babies. The Death Stranding is an apocalyptic event which brings BTs into the world of the living, as well as timefall (rain which ages anything it initially touches, but works like regular rainwater after it comes into contact with anything). If an BT consumes a living person then that causes a voidout which leaves a massive crater in the ground and wipes out everybody nearby.
At the start of the game Sam is roped into working for the United Cities of America. The President Bridget is dying and she wants Sam to travel east to west coast to finish what she started, connecting all the outposts and facilities of America online, bringing people out of isolation to work together. Sam has aphenphosmphobia (fear of being touched) and is more of a lone wolf type of guy, but Bridget is his adoptive mother who raised Sam almost from birth and manages to convince Sam to finish what she started. Bridget dies and you take her body to the incinerator for cremation so it doesn't cause a voidout. That's the first mission of the game, and there are about 70 main deliveries. Bridget has a daughter named Amelie who went west to do Bridget's bidding, but Amelie was captured by a terrorist group called homo demens lead by Troy Baker so Sam goes west to rescue Amelie while bringing facilities online. A guy called Die-Hardman (black guy with skull mask, real name John McClane) steps in as temporary director for United Cities of America. Along his way west Sam makes friends with a bunch of people, like Guillermo Del Toro, Léa Seydoux, Margaret Qualley, Nicolas Winding Refn, etc.
Sam has visions and dreams of Amelie while he goes west, her telling him to come find Amelie on her beach. A beach is a person's own unique afterlife which is shaped by the will of their inhabitants. You get to see different beaches in the game, most notably from those who died during the world wars and the Vietnam war. Beaches are kind of like a personal silent hill for each person. In the beaches based on wars you fight a man named Clifford Unger (Mads Mikkelsen), who tries to attack Sam because Unger had a BB who was taken away from him and Unger wants his BB back.
Eventually Sam makes his way west and fights Troy Baker, rescuing Amelie. Sam and Amelie use her beach to go back east, but then they encounter Unger and Bridget confronting each other on the beach. Die Hardman is also there, begging Unger for forgiveness while Unger demands Bridget to give him back his BB. Unger heads towards Sam but Amelie pushes Sam into the ocean and Sam reenters the world of the living.
Unger was the one who was controlling Troy Baker. Everytime you leave a private room in Death Stranding you're drip fed small flashbacks of Unger while he talks to his BB. You see Unger through the BB's eyes. Sam and Unger confront each other in Vietnam war beach, fight, then Sam ends up giving his BB to Unger, but Unger hands the BB back to Sam. Unger and Sam hug, then Unger disappears.

Die Hardman checks the United Cities archives and learns President Bridget had some type of cancer and was unable to have children. Everybody questions if Amelie was even real. Turns out Amelie was the one controlling everything, Troy Baker, the terrorists, etc. Amelie is an EE (extinction entity) who is supposed to bring about a mass extinction (five were in the past, one killed off the dinosaurs). Amelie is the 6th EE with the power to wipe out everything on the planet. Sam has to stop Amelie. Sam has to travel to Amelie's beach on a higher dimension and talk to her and change her mind about the extinction. Sam is teleported to Amelie's beach.
At Amelie's beach, Sam learns Bridget and Amelie are one and the same. Amelie is time and space with the ability to control everything. Amelie is Bridget's soul, while Bridget's body was President in the real world. Amelie didn't age while Bridget did. When you talk to Amelie you manage to convince her to shut off her connections to other beaches and isolates herself to prevent the Death Stranding.
Last chapter of the game. Die Hardman reveals he was forced by President Bridget to kill Unger. Die Hardman and Unger served together in a previous war so Die Hardman felt bad about killing Unger.
Sam's BB stops functioning so he's told to take it to the incinerator to burn its body. On his way he reconnects to the BB and experiences another flashback, where it's revealed that Unger's wife became braindead during her pregnancy. A BB was extracted from Unger's wife, and Unger agreed to this. Bridget wanted Unger's BB to use as an experiment to study the BTs and Death Stranding. Unger didn't realize his baby would be used like equipment, he kills his braindead wife, steals his BB back and tries to escape the UCA, but Bridget stops Unger and orders Die Hardman to shoot him. Sam is Unger's BB, all grown up.
Sam overcomes his aphenphosmphobia, takes his BB out of the pod and tries to revive it. Sam is successful and discovers his BB is a little girl. He called her Louise and they live a life away from the UCA, lone wolf and cub.

That's indicative of a cult. When people are too afraid of speaking their mind, regardless of what their leader does. Know who's more at fault than Kojima? The gaming media. They hype him up like's some messiah of gaming when he's a fucking nobody. He's some homeless guy they found on the streets of Tokyo. That's why the writing in his games is so laughably bad. It's not even a Japanese thing because his games stand out in terms of poor writing and shit being retconned in every sequel.

So what? You can skip every single one if you like, why play a Kojima game if you're not interested in having 10+ hours of world building cutscenes?
>the gameplay loop is about walking from point A to point B
No, it's not. There's so much more to it than that. You have to not bring too much stuff to not be overburdened, but still bring what you think you'll need. If you're Mr. Big Balls you CAN overbuden yourself but you have to deal with the increased risk of falling over and breaking all your shit. Even with a low weight you can't just sprint A to B, there's environmental obstacles, enemies, terrain to navigate. Do you take the shorter, dangerous route or the longer, safer route? You're never just sat there holding forward, every few seconds you're scanning terrain, readjusting your balance, keeping an eye out for the winding path you're gonna take up the mountain, keeping an eye on your batteries and any generators players have placed on your general path. There's so much more going on second to second in Death Stranding that it puts fast paced action games to shame. If you just run A to B you'll have a shit time, constant falling, constant enemy encounters slowing you down/game overing you, constantly feeling like you're bashing your head against a brick wall because you are. The game demands your attention.

Death Stranding is good and no, I don't worship Kojima.
His biggest strength is small, detailed worlds. His biggest weakness is his obsession with open world games. Metal Gear Solid V Ground Zeroes showed he still has the magic, he can make good games if he sticks to what he knows. Phantom Pain showed not even Kojima can make an open world game good AND as dense with content as his smaller, more concise level design.
Personally all I care about is the games. I don't and have never given a flying fuck about the people behind them and Kojima is no exception. Yes, he has a cult following but there's plenty of people who like his games and think Kojima is a wanker.

The plot is fine. It peaks in Episode 3 when you have to carry an autistic, Engrish-speaking Japanese girl through a dangerous mountain range to her angsty, autistic, hoarder lover so you can be treated to an amazingly bad cutscene of their romantic reconnection, which is immediately followed by unlocking an interview called "An Asexual World"–implying that their cringy romance is sexless. The epilogue cutscene was unironically good.

Peace walker was absurdly good for a PSP game and it had a shit ton of content, Ground Zeroes had excellent gameplay and level design, shame it only had like 7 unique missions.

MGS3 remains one of the best games ever made. Peace Walker was pretty good. MGSV is good; would have been great if it didn't have microtransaction bullshit. Death Stranding is good .
If you think MGS3 was merely good, I'd like to see the hot garbage that you consider to be better.

MGSV had meme potential but that’s it. Everything else was bland, and the story was written wholly by Kojima since Fukushima left, so it naturally sucked.
I’d argue that MGS2 was better than 3 story-wise but MGS3 definitely had more content and better gameplay.

in a weird sort of way i'm jealous of kojima. i honestly thought it was going to be a "2deep4u" kind of game and that it would drop off a cliff for the normalnigs, but everyone seems to be getting enjoyment out of it so far, even though it doesn't look like anything more than a walking simulator with a few extra gimmicks. if something like this can get everyone talking just because of a name attached to it, then what about someone's name being attached to an actually good and fun game?

Does anyone know the story behind this song or why it's included within the game? Norman Reedus can sing it when you're taking a bath in one of the game's hot springs. It's way better than anything else in the Death Stranding soundtrack, with the exception of BB's theme.

MGSV is the best game in the series if you actually care about stealth/action gameplay, and don't care about watching hours of shit-tier anime movies instead.
