I don't really remember the original game well enough to know all the changes. The UI is a lot better though, you have a stamina/fatigue meter and switching tools/items is really easy. You also can't accidentally throw items on the floor anymore don't remember if you could in the original, but that was always annoying in these games
Also there are new heart events. After seeing the original heart events you can give the marriage candidate (of either gender) a "preserved flower" which unlocks the second tier of heart events. Then after seeing all of those you can give them the blue feather to propose.

Probably, I haven't played much Rune Factory, but Bokujou Monoguitari has kind of gone to shit over the years, there was a slow decline after Friends of Mineral Town and it just hasn't recovered since then, they' pulled out a lot of the nuance and risk, and they've moved towards giving the player more early on, often making early game significantly easier than it used to be, and that's even when you take into account the sort of quirks older titles had with time stopping in certain places. A lot of the comf existed in context, you'd spend the first few weeks working your ass off on a farm scrimping and saving all you could which would give way to the next phase of getting to know the town and it's people. Even the tutorial has been extended greatly, I played Doraemon SoS the other day, it took an hour and a half to finish the tutorial, as if the developers don't realize that figuring out how things work was actually part of the charm of the original titles.
I'm legitimatley dreading what's in store for the future of the series. I'm also annoyed that the Friends of Mineral Town remake is what they announced back in 2017, and that it took almost 3 years to make, and that it looks like it's made for IOS/Android.

I think it's a problem with the 3D model artists than it actually being 3D. Here's Animal Parade/Tree of Tranquility. I think these games had the best 3D models for the HM series.
Then there's the 3D RF games. Tides of Destiny had some decent models for a Wii game. The models should be on this level by now. The FoMT remake is going for a chibi design but I think ToT/AP already did that well. A slightly altered version of that would have been good.

You don't even have to go into depth on RF4 to do well. But I agree with you on Frontier. To make the runey system work, just make it so you can move them via Monica instead of doing it yourself. The main problem is that it's a slow, painful, boring process moving all the runeys. Make that easy and no one will have a problem with it. Give every character a ton of more dialogue like RF3/4 and make building relationships with animals faster and it would be 10/10. Also animation skipping for things like brushing would be good.
I would love a remake of Frontier or ToD. A Frontier 2 would be great too.

once you hit prosperity in an area only grass runeys get consumed at a rate of around 5 per day. This means all you need to do is move runeys from your grass factories to other areas. Its infinitely more manageable than moving 15 runeys of random type every week just to prevent areas from dying.

Let's put it like this. Rune Factory is essentially Harvest Moon, but with combat, skills to grow, major quests and storyline plus the ranching is more active.
The early game of Harvest Moon can get a bit tedious since you just roam the local wilderness and catch as many items as you can to sell or use, but that's something you'll repeat a lot and it can kinda get boring fast.
Rune Factory has combat to mitigate this a bit and bigger\more areas to explore and scavenge.
I find that with Harvest Moon you quickly run out of things to do to fill your day and you'll get a lot of empty time with little to do.
Rune Factory however, you ALWAYS have something to do, be it combat, grinding materials or skills, crafting, etc.
RF can get on your nerves until you learn to relax and stop trying to micromanage how you spend every single minute of your time, while Harvest Moon that's never really a problem, but the early game can kinda suffer from this since you'll have less things to do as well.
Also, you guys should stop mentioning Harvest Moon since that's a different studio working on it now. The previous dudes are now making Story of Seasons and that's a decent series at least.

The game really arbitrarily limits certain things a lot more than the original did. Your farm has to be upgraded every year, animals can't get 10 hearts unless you breed new ones, I'm pretty sure stone being a cost to house upgrades might be a problem long term. Hell, I don't think you can even play the Harvest Goddess New Years number game year one anymore. However, one great thing is that you don't need to have fully upgraded regular tools to find the cursed tools. This would normally be pointless as by winter you should have upgraded them. However, there's an interesting gltich. If you save below the spring mine doorway, load the save, then walk up into it, you can clip out of bounds. This way you can walk into the lake mine during any season and without the teleport stone from the third year. It's a pretty fucking good deal, I'd say.

If you're going to make a game "HD" then throwing it through some filters and somehow making it look worse than the handheld version on an emulator is not good. There was a better way to go about this and this was most likely the worst and laziest thing to do.
Redoing the textures and cleaning up the models would have been a much better way to go about it.

Well it's a good time to get into the series then. If you want to play an earlier game, then many would recommend Harvest Moon: Back to Nature and Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral town. I'm not sure of HM: Magical Melody but I heard some say it was good. I would also recommend Harvest Moon: Animal Parade. All of these should be easy to emulate.
If you want to try out Rune Factory, then I recommend 3, 4, and Frontier. I would recommend trying out Frontier and then 3 to see the progression of the series while also not getting a bad game. If the runey system that game does annoy you, there is a code you can use to fix that.

Speedrunning doesn't really seem fun or rewarding at least for this sort of game. Restricted/challenge runs are pretty neat though. You can complete arcs 1 & 2 before ever seeing your first day of summer all thanks to the wonders of the sharance maze. It could be done with both your skills & level locked at lv1 if you wanted to.
