My issue is the waste of plastic for a case just containing a code that can fit onto something the size of a gift card or receipt. Unless the box is merely a display item. Then a person just brings it up to the desk, does the transaction and gets the download code on a slip of paper/card/receipt.

I find it hilarious how they find a need to clarify it's the FULL GAME as opposed to half the game or just the tutorial. Anon, you can't expect a tiny indie company like 2K Games to be able to afford to print discs to go inside of those boxes. It might make sense when you say it out loud, seeing as the discs are the cheapest part of the box, but for such a tiny company that has no big-name IPs and has never released a hit, they had to cut costs somewhere. And their board of directors determined that cost-cutting measure would effect only a minor part of selling games - actually playing the game.
For real though, they did it because they want to reduce second-hand copies and rentals. They successfully made their own game so hard to buy/play that most people didn't even realize it launched up to a month after it did. I'm glad they're as inept as they are, because I didn't want another two-three years of hearing about Borderlands again.

What a way to totally misread the market. These aren't going to please anybody, since digital-fags don't care about boxes and manuals, and physical-fags aren't getting the disk. Even collector-fags and people who just want something to display on the shelf aren't going to be happy since they're an abberant form and look like hell in a mixed collection. Kind of like how they completely fuck up the spines of "Greatests Hits" titles as a penalty and mark of shame for waiting until budget pricing.
The only way these little mini-boxes make any sense to me is either as a Holiday/Birthday gift (since it's lame to give someone a receipt with a code on it or similar intangible)… or if they're ornamentals for a mini-console like the Sega Genesis and NES mini.

From the perspective of brick-and-mortar retailers
PROBLEM
Digital Distribution of Video Games is Set to Replace Brick-And-Mortar Distribution
Digital Video Game distribution is growing into the de-facto only way to obtain Video Games. There are several factors to this including:
>Increased Profit Margins for Video Game Publishers
<Video Games are sold to consumers at the same price point regardless of if they are digital or brick-and-mortar sales. Video Game Publishers can expect higher profit margins by cutting out brick-and-mortar middle-men
>Greater Control of Price Point
<Manufactures often provide a recommended price point to retailers, but retailers are not required to stick to it. A brick-and-mortar retailer may be inclined to lower the price point on a video game software they over ordered. This could threaten the well established fixed price point of video games and nobody wants that! This fact combined with the prior point creates risk for video game publishers
>Digital Theft is Becoming Harder then Physical Theft
<Theft is a common occurrence at brick-and-mortar retailers, so much so that most retailers factor it into their budgets under categories like "shrink". To make matters worse, the key portion of common anti-theft devices can be legally purchased online by potential thieves. Video game consoles however, are proving to be harder to crack by and large not the switch though, but piracy doesn't negatively impact sales as can be seen with the success of the Switch and the failure of the Wii U.
>Stolen Discs Are A Lost Sale
<Video Game publishers take a real risk when distributions their products phonically as there is no way for them to deactivate a psychical object that has not been paid for, by switching to digital distribution
>??? shit I don't have the time to write out sorry
SOLUTION
Sell small download codes that are not activated until after the point of sale not unlike giftcards
PROBLEM
Consumers do not see download codes are valuables unlike gift cards
However, customers are very much willing to purchase special editions that include special packaging and exclusive additional physical material
SOLUTION
Put the codes in exclusive packaging!

This is true for me at least. If a game sucks I can still make some money back. With digital downloads you pay full price for something that you can never get rid of.
I remember when digital distribution was starting to appear people were saying how the cost savings could be passed down to the consumer. I wonder if those people were just naive or paid shills. Either way, prices are exactly the same as retail and you own nothing, goy.
There is zero point in buying games anymore. Physical is now just a code in a box, and if you are lucky, then the disc contains at least half of the data files, so you only have to download half the game. Even if a game is promised to be DRM-free like Witcher 3, you still have to register with GOG and make your copy worthless in order to get patches.

In some cases, maybe, I don't give a shit about resale value. I don't really care about collecting either. I just want to have the option, while it still exists, to put that disk into any compatible hardware device, and play the game. We haven't even seen a major digital storefront fail, but I've seen enough smaller digital storefronts close and enough larger businesses (in general) go from being market leader to the venture capitalist butcher shop within a matter of a few years to know that your entire digital library is only a hairs breadth from being invalidated at any moment. And that's not even counting someone stealing your account, verification failures on the distributor's end, and being banned for some shit you said a decade ago which is no longer kosher but is still in the archives.
It's only a matter of time before Sony or Microsoft succeed in pushing account locked physical media - but for the moment, it's last real bastion of consumer rights.

Extended warranty through vendors are effectively gambling. Since they often don't cover ADH (accidental damage and handling) youre basically hedging your bet that something will break. If you're buying an $800 tv it might make sense to do it, but since planned obsolecence is a thing, I probably still wouldnt.
Thus, many companies treat it as a revenue stream and we're prompted to ask for it on every valid item, but everyone says no so I just default to skipping it. Fortnite doesn't have a disc so I have no idea what it would cover. Switch games are also somewhat durable, being a cartridge

Really the issue is more that, obvious pretending ownership and rights don't real, digital is frankly a superior means of distribution. Not to say that physical archival shouldn't exist If you don't have your GOG library backed up to disks or at the very least an external drive of some kind you're a fucking IDIOT.
Physical Copies are only really superior in so far that theoretically it's harder for a publisher to violate your rights of ownership.

This has been the absolute state of PC gaming for years, and I'm sorry that you console gamers have to deal with it too. There's absolutely no fucking excuse for it. If this is all that gamestores do now they should just quietly close down instead of sell glorified Christmas tree ornaments.
I remember buying Portal in the usual big plastic box, then getting home to find that the thing rattling around inside it was a slip of paperboard with a download key. On our shit-tier broadband it would take days to download, plus installing Steam, AND THERE WAS NO GAME MANUAL. 3-for-the-price-of-one bullshit! I was absolutely fucking LIVID at how I'd been deceived and ended up pirating it from my school's network.
And it's only got worse from there - recently I walked into a game store to see about a Switch and my heart just sank because every single title was like this, PC and console. The gaming industry has literally regressed 30 years because back when an AAA game cost $40-60 you got a manual and your install disks guaranteed, probably an extra hint booklet or quick-key combo, and if you were realy lucky a booklet with backstory or a mini-novel. High Seas Trader came with the former that doubled as a legit history lesson, Elite came with the latter called "The Dark Wheel".
Now you get…a string of gibberish that gives you permission to download a copy of a game your 'ownership' is dependant on someone else's servers and permission.
What a joke.

>The gaming industry has literally regressed 30 years because back when an AAA game cost $40-60 you got a manual and your install disks guaranteed, probably an extra hint booklet or quick-key combo, and if you were realy lucky a booklet with backstory or a mini-novel.
GTA4 on PC comes with a thick manual a poster/map, and a quick guide. But that is COMPLETELY leaving out the fact that the game has 20 different layers of DRM installed. First, you have the release date check (Which is broken and requires and an official offline patch). THEN, you have the Rockstar Social Club (Now defunct and removed with official patches). THEN, you have SecureROM. And, THEN, you have GFWL.

Gamers are a pathetic bunch. All it would have taken to stop digital distribution was to hold back on buying Half Life 2 for a few months. If within a couple months Valve was unable to force Steam down people's throats and started bleeding money they would have dropped Steam like a hot potato. But no, they had to get the latest shiny toy right now. Those are the same people who buy gamer fuel and RGB shit. Gaming would be better off dead than being this disgrace.

How old were you back then? If you were just a dumb kid you are excused. I remember being a teenager when I first heard about games requiring Steam and I thought it was a complete rip-off, I have been hating Valve ever since.

Digital distribution isn't an intrinsic evil. It's convenient in a number of ways and allows more people to publish games. Selling code boxes is ridiculous, though.

I meant the RGB blinking lights you see on gamer accessories. I actually have a glowing keyboard (except mine has a somewhat modest design instead of looking like a Transformer had an abortion) because it's impossible to get a mechanical keyboard for a decent price that's not gamer shit. The only sensible use for the LEDs is as a for typing in the dark when all the LEDs are turned to the same color at the lowest intensity. And even that is useless for me since I can touch-type.
>>16771546
Agreed (as long as it's at the very least DRM-free), there are games which would never get released otherwise. But even before digital distribution there was indie-gaming, through shareware and mail order, so it's not impossible. But there is absolutely no reason why a big-budget company selling a brand-new game should use digital distribution.

Well, there's plenty of reasons. Physical logistics and material costs are two of them. Reaching a global audience easier is another.

You just have to look around a little. The best place to find a cheap (or free) mechanical keyboard these days is in garages and attics. I'm using an old Mitsubishi Electric 6511-UP that I dug up out of a box of miscellaneous computer junk. It's beige, it's filled with mystery dust that falls out if I turn it upside-down, it's PS/2 instead of USB, the keys go clack clack clack, and it has a volume knob and a button that says "WWW". It's great.

You're probably not even going to get a printed card in a few years. You'll have to go on WalMart's website and link your Steam/Microsoft/Sony account and when you bring the box to the counter - they'll just take it from you, credit your account for digital access, and then put the box back on the shelf.
Well, not them - you'll have to scan the box and then walk it back to the display shelf yourself since cashier is a dying job. The only "employee" on duty is a police/security officer watching over your transaction making sure you don't do anything funny.

I miss the early years when self-checkouts were still a new thing. You could just scan your stuff, pay, and go - simple as that. Now there's always a person stationed by the checkouts ready to wrangle the tards, and when they don't have anything to do they just stand there and greet every single customer that walks past them, completely defeating the point of a self-checkout.
IF I WANTED TO TALK TO PEOPLE AND MAKE EYE CONTACT I WOULD USE THE REGULAR CHECKOUT FUCK OFFFFFFFFFFF
Anyway, physical stores are going to go the way of the dodo sooner or later anyway. The future is going to be home delivery, because then they only need to pay for the warehouses (which they already have) and the warehouse staff (which they already have) and the delivery drivers. As soon as self-driving car technology becomes viable and mainstream, they'll find a way to get rid of the delivery drivers too. Maybe put all the deliveries in individual lockers, and when the truck arrives at the customer's house, the locker with their delivery unlocks? Who knows.

The hugest thing I have noticed is not only have game companies in the West become more lazy with Diversity hires and microtransactions. They are very very much interested in trying to steal from the consumer and making profits with Digital and trying these schemes of using a card or a digital download with pre order incentives that unlock one hour before launch time. Sad part is once the server shuts down like for PS5 it's going to be hard to have these games in your library for future consoles and I highly doubt various companies want you to retain it but keep rebuying it over and over again just like for your retro games libraries. This is why I still support piracy and emulation. Games have been getting piss poor and lazy yet we still pay 60$ for the product and then pay DLC. Especially on Consoles.

I have seen this becoming more common. You use to have a cashier and a bagger. You even had a team of 4 in a Pizza place. Now they downsize and copy Walmart with it's really awful policies. Which is essentially use less Cashier's especially on busy times and have self checkout Lanes open. Not only is the cashier in charge of bagging, electronics, and warranty but they also have to do groceries on top of it. They have to be highly productive and it is highly stressful. Even in Pizza places it's 2 or even 1 person answering phones, making pizza etc that is multiple orders deep. Keep in mind these are in places that are not California that have huge minimum wage increases. I can only imagine things getting worse because everyone keeps paying into the system of Amazon and Walmart sadly.

How long ago was this? There are even games from last gen that hide they needed internet connection. Typically it was hiding that the DLC was download only instead of all being on-disc.
