At long last, Obsidian proves that they can write Firefly ripoffs with a hyper-promiscuous hetero female engineer replaced with a hyper-shy lesbian!
I shouldn't complain. The first playthrough is amusing enough. The second playthrough reveals that the world is very small and shallow. This is definitely not a competitor with New Vegas, but it proves that the studio is skillful enough to make something as good as New Vegas if they get enough budget and time.

I keep trying to post and the board has not been cooperating, so this is just a posting test before I talk about the game.

OK, text posts work, let's try an image.
So, about the game … it is super short. It feels like a New Vegas DLC, not like an independent game.

The characters are not too annoying, the witty dialogue is not too annoying, even though it seems like it was written by Joss Whedon. But the gameplay is not all that great. The companions are underused in combat - if we get to recruit six of them, we should be able to take all six of them along in a big seven-person party. The ship can't be customized. It's all just a little underwhelming. Fallout 4 was not great, but it had more content than this.

It's not terrible it's just bland. The setting's a gay and nonsensical mix of steampunk, 1950's and wild west that never gels together and leads to an world that looks like shit and doesn't feel real.

> steampunk, 1950's and wild west that never gels together
The anti-corporate core message is pretty unified.
The retrofuturist style is not steampunk, it's pure retro sci-fi. If you read a lot of pulp magazines and enjoy art deco, you will recognize it. Now, I happen to like art deco, and I happen to like pulp, so I was right at home with the visuals. The visuals were the only thing that kept me going past the Joss-Whedon-style writing. I am willing to trash every other part of the game, but I really enjoyed the visuals.

Retrofuturist, specifically, 50s is atompunk.
But watching a stream of it, it fails at being any type of retro scifi. Mainly because hair, makeup, fashion, matters for that aesthetic.
My biggest problem was that it felt like they literally just recreated New Vegas companions. The shy, asexual lesbian was the Felicia Day Brotherhood of Steel character. The drunk "redhead" was Cass. Felix was doing Raul's lines.

No it fucking isn't. The corporations and their logos are from the late 1800's, everything they build is art deco, everyone speaks in 1950's radio jingles, and none of it makes sense with a frontier setting. The starter area puts random marauders everywhere so you don't ask why everyone's bunched together doing factory drama with a fucking cannery when there's an open wilderness to be had. It's fucking stupid, and the combat feels bad enough that it's a chore to play.

Not OP but this is the first game where the more I play it the less I want to keep playing it. The whole thing felt like they really wanted to make new Vegas 2 with colors. The worst part is the writing really teeters on borderlands 2 bad but never gets there so the story isn't a reason to play it. The gameplay is just an fps with bioshock powers but somehow bland in comparison. On top of that you can tell the writers are progressive as fuck and it does seep into the writing more than I personally like.

It was really disappointing when the game ended at what I thought was probably the halfway point. If someone shot straight through the main quests, you could probably beat this game in 3 hours. The more time I have for reflection, the more I hate this game.

I was very disappointed. It honestly felt like a borderlands clone. Then again, I guess I was foolish enough to get a game based on the developer name and normalfag reviews. It definitely did not have that New Vegas feel to it. Here's what I hated about it.
>Lackluster combat
Guns had little variety and just didn't have good feel to them. Melee wasn't any different.
>reused assets
How many fucking planets do Raps need to be on? Part of the excitement of a new area is new enemies. Primals on that barren moon killed it for me as well.
>open and empty
It was nice patrolling the Mojave since it actually felt rewarding to discover new areas. OW just makes me think, "fuck I have to walk all the way over there?"
All in all I'm pretty bored with it. I think the characters are ok at least. I did roll my eyes at the space dykes, but they didn't really bother me too much.

Its not RPG-ish enough, while it lets you be "evil" you cant be a brash callous cunt like who is simply amoral rather than immoral(aside from the first over world area which is much better than 80% of the later game). Anti-hero characters dont really fit in here where the dialogue doesn't let you give no fucks in certain situations. The """""perks""""" are damn near useless 10% here and there modifiers and doesn't change anything until the last tier of them, and this such a waste of the cool system they introduced where you will receive a character flaw depending on how and what way you fuck up in the game, letting you amend that with and extra perk. But since they all are worth as much as a leppers toe jam it wouldn't even be a sound trade off if you got to pick 2 perks.
the companions are all boring aside from the cleaning bot, Max companion quest pissed me off especially since it never went anywhere despite having an interesting premise of mans place and purpose in the cosmos and ended with sniffing space salts and him being all like "I'm fine now :)" after some hallucinations. How all the companions in general can be so much worse than most of the NPC townies and and such is mindboggling. all the companions are so boring its hard to give a shit to begin with and the 3 companion quests I bothered doing were, with all honesty the weakest quests in the game. so cliched and cookie cutter bland you would think they were created with some sort of AI algorithm and focus group testing.
the non-Planet based parts of the game are pure ass with environments much larger than the game play actually required them to be, and the game is piss easy unless you play on Supernova, but then your companion dies in like a single fucking second some times and you cant even heal them.
the consumable item balance is super fucking off with healing and statbuff items that does barely anything but is found all in extreme abundance, buffs run out in literally as little as 15 seconds so you constantly have to go back into the menu.
The shooting kind feels like Bioshock with the inhaler thing but with no plasmids so it's even flatter and samier than that game in this regard. The AI is also dumb as shit so their actions turn almost every firefight into a comical chaos with the companion's and NPC's nonsensical actions.
90% of the women have dyke haircuts for some reason its really distracting.
Its actually funny(intentionally) some times, a few lulz were had. as with everything in this game the quality is all over the place so that isnt constant.
the world building is pretty nice when they arent desperately shoving it in your face, as if to not let a single retard miss any aspect deemed important for the "envisioned experience". the low tech can be accounted for everything needing to be easily manufactured insitu. And the degeneration from fancy 50's style to a more gritty utilitarian borderlandsesque "steampunk" is a symptom of the colony effort going down the shitter overall. past events are relayed through terminal logs and bits in conversations when done in that way help create a scale of time and place. but are often just suppository style shoved up your ass later in forceful moments of exposition later, like an episodic recap.

One other complaint I had was the morality of it all. Maybe I'm not looking deep enough, but the overall morality of the game seems to be
DO YOU SUCK CORPORATE COCK?
MSI or whatever on Monarch did a little better on that regard, explaining how there is some necessity to the whole corporate bullshit. But overall the good/bad was glaringly black and white.

Really didn't like it. The gameplay is unironically worse than new vegas and the rest of the game is not compelling enough to keep me playing. Dialog-wise, it is slightly worse than new vegas in matters of mechanics and possibilities, while being a lot worse in matters of quality due to space dykes and all the other reasons that have been discussed so far.
The gameplay can be interesting on Supernova, but it effectively cuts you off from parts of content because companions die instantly on it. I have tried keeping them alive, but it is pointless. Also, enemies become borderlands bullet sponges that take 10 headshots and remain alive. Probably worse than vanilla new vegas.

I had some difficulty keeping companions alive on Supernova (playing a game like this on anything other than the hardest difficulty is retarded and never do it). Not so much that anything was impossible though. There were a couple places where it was better to go solo. The bullet spongyness was countered by shotguns being OP, but you have to use the correct damage type. Don't forget to equip companions with armor though, that's pretty fucking important on supernova.
