>In 2002, J Allard didn't expect publishers to come for our wallets. In 2005, he was leading the charge. Microsoft's experiment with downloadable content on the original Xbox was a success. With the creation of its new currency, Microsoft points, users were given fair warning to expect new, paid content for their favorite games.

XBOX Live is single handedly responsible for every predatory practice you see in gaming regarding the internet. I remember other game services, especially PSN being laughed at by normalfags because their online service was free, one of the stupidest and most retarded anti-consumer stances I've ever seen normalfags take during the sixth generation.

XBOX Live opened the floodgates for shitty cash grabs, inadvertently causing the death of AA titles, steep increase in DLC, microtransactions and charging for P2P connections.

Fuck Microsoft. The only thing they deserve next gen is certain death.

You're forgetting Sony taking gaming mainstream and making it "cool" with the Playstation.

It was the first dude-bro console. Prior to that gaming was just for nerds and it was better that way.

But if PSX was the cancer then Xbox was when the cancer metastasized.

Let him have his fantasy. Actually fuck it, lets rip him to shreds. Gaming was not some secret club only the most beta of males played. They were the hardcore gamers and hobbyists, yes but not the only ones playing. Shitloads of people played arcade games, home games with the NES and on from there. Lara Croft was a big mascot for gaming and in the mainstream, Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog were huge. Stop this faggotry that gaming was niche and underground until le 2007. Just because you were a loser who got picked on doesn't mean dregs as bad as you only played games.

<Microsoft is responsible for everything wrong with gaming today

Talk about hyperbole. The first proto-DLC came way before microsoft ever entered the console wars. The expansion packs of yesteryear evolved into their online counterparts of today. You can blame developers for sega, nintendo, and old pc games for starting this expansion pack shit.

And then you have valve, which you avoided condemning. Despite their tf2 crates evolving into the gambling lootboxes of today. Nor did you condemn apple or google for making mobileshit games a thing. All I'm saying is that while microsoft is no innocent angel, they're not "responsible for everything wrong in gaming".

Reminder that Microsoft orchestrated the whole "Japanese gaming is falling behind" meme during the 7th generation. Specifically, they hired guerilla marketers to trash talk Japanese games on forums so they could drum up excitement for the 360 and all the western PC developers they managed to get to jump over to console (i.e. Bethesda).

This was confirmed by a source from EA in pic related.

>my dad totally plays video games so video games weren't obscure

Anon there is a gigantic fucking difference between seeing a mascot and being able to recognize it, and being pandered to by a wide array of publishers seeking to undermine the integrity of their existing franchises just to appeal to you because you are the one not playing video games. The figures aren't even fucking comparable, niche titles or Japan only titles (which are the closest thing to the "pre-Hollywoodization" market) are considered successful if they break half a million sales. AAA games are considered unsuccessful if they "only" get 2 million sales. The difference is dramatic and undeniable.

Sony didn't "market" the PS as cool. It earned the reputation for a variety of reasons.

>Rightfully ended Nintendo's and SEGA's reign over the console market when they were busy experimenting with shit consoles that were nothing more that bad gimmicks to jew people out of their cash like the virtual boy and the 32X

>Broke the industry free of Nintendo's tyranny over what games got to see the light of day with their shitty (((seal of approval)))

>Brought variety to videogames beyond cutesy children's games and outright garbage ad nauseum

>Opened the gates for anyone who wanted to make games to make their ideas come to fruition, essentially injecting the industry with much needed life

>Spawned most of the greatest games of all time

>Was the perfect foundation for the era's transition from 2D games 3D games

>Flipped the bird to the bit wars (which were not yielding any substantial results at that point)

The PS1 prevented the industry from stagnating with Nintendo and SEGA's trashy ideas. It was born out of revenge due to Nintendo jewing Sony out of a signed partnership and it made those faggots pay the price dearly. The PS1 only fixed vidya, and consequently got a lot of attention.

It goes far beyond that, the reason why the xbox uses the green color scheme is because their entire strategy for defeating the jap gaming industry was originally named 'Project Manhattan' which lead to the first few DirectX logos being based on a radioactive logo. For you youngsters out there not familiar with WW2 history Project Manhattan was the development project that created the first atomic bombs that were dropped on two cities after it was obvious Japan was losing the war and was ready to sue for peace.

When the hype machine for the PS2 was heating up there was talk in corporate circles of Sony introducing a home computing device that would eat Microsoft's lunch, after trying to approach Sony to get Windows to run on it and failing they tried partnering with Nintendo and were rebuked again. Only Sega said yes and that's why there's a WindowsCE logo on the Dreamcast, Sega was eventually seriously fucked over by this arrangement with their key personnel being poached after sabotaging the Dreamcast in the US on purpose to leave more room for a new console to appear on the market.

When it comes to their involvement in the 'indie game' scene, creating their fake news site called Polygon after one of their lackeys singlehandedly destroyed Penny Arcade's journalism news site by defending the xbone's DRM scheme and pushing of SJW politics all that could fill a book.

This whining about p2p, microtransactions, onerous DRM and constant patching of unfinished yet released games is small potatoes compared to the real harm that they've done to the industry.

Nintendo is the shittiest company in gaming history. all they do is make the same game over and over with slightly better graphics and maybe a gimmick to differentiate gameplay. just look at all the mario, zelda, pokemon, metroid, smash bros, mario spinoffs, etc they put out over the years.

>Sega and Nintendo did that prior to.

The Genesis had Sega Channel, the SNES had the Satellaview

>Sega and every MMO developer did that prior to.

Phantasy Star Online was actually referenced very heavily in making XBL

>Sega and every PC developer did that prior to.

Sega Channel actually had DLC, and this is excluding expansion packs/cartirdges

>Japan did that prior to.

Limted edition releases of games

>Japan did that prior to.

The JRPG was the consolization of the CRPG, along with how every popular computer game was ported to consoles by a Japanese developer

>Nintendo did that prior to.

Even some of the censorships that were made to the Western versions of games was carried over to later Japanese rereleases, and there's also how they released several "U.S.A." versions of games.

Except this situation was different. Nintendo (a console manufacturer) was being reduced to a mere software developer by their hardware manufacturing partner, sony. It would have been the first time that nintendo made a nintendo console, but another company owned all the rights to produce the games/CDs for it.

A third party dev asking for a console manufacturer's permission to put their games on their platform is one thing.

But for a console manufacturer to need permission to make games for the console they created is unheard of. Sony would have jewed nintendo hard if they continued that deal.

You don't need to tell people you suck cocks, it's easy to tell from your posts and lack of knowledge on things that happened. The PS1 didn't even need much of its own marketing for that matter, the industry was so fucked before it came out that just the sheer lineup it had at launch was enough to win people over. SEGA's baffling incompetence with the Saturn and terrible ports of its stellar arcade titles like Daytona, combined with nintendo outright jewing consumers and resellers were also factors, but two industry giants being beaten by a newcomer's 32bit console speaks more about the PS1's merits than you could ever deny, child.

They are all to blame, and together they symbolize the pool of consumers who are uninformed and terrible persons using video games as a lifestyle choice and ego centered. Nothing can be done about, except inform and shame and repeat forever. Everyone makes purchasing errors, people need to learn how to make the most of their money. Microsoft and all the others went from quality titles to making games that target the most mentally weak among gamers with the most disposable income. The whales of gaming. Even e-celebs with misleading cleavage target their own whales. It is all psychology and unawareness. Scammers and the marks.

It has been a rough patch and it is everyone's fault and it will correct itself with time. The best you can hope for is constant remastering of the classics so young and newer gamers can know quality instead of leftist horseshit and Todd lies and Microsoft's slight of hand trickery.

Consumers at the end of the day are the ones responsible.

You are acting as if it isn't an inherent trait for a company to find new ways to maximize profit at the cost of the consumer.

If the majority of consumers continually reward those actions, do you expect a company that exists to produce a profit is NOT going to exploit it?

If I was at EA, and someone told me that I could make $500 million a year by selling people digital hueball cards that cost literally nothing to produce, why WOULDN'T I say no?

It's by design. Thanks to usury capitalism requires exponential growth, which makes it predatory. This is why they lure the producers and costumers in with freedom and quality, then over time strip them of both, and finally boil it down to the lowest common denominator, while using revenue, not to make the products better, but to groom the costumers into accepting trash.

It's hardly the consumers fault when every industry is designed around deception, lies and criminal exploitation. If you weaponize temptations, you will create chaos and death. That's in our nature.

>to find new ways to maximize profit at the cost of the consumer

All because of usury. It's a scheme that drives every economy straight into a wall, while destroying everyone in it's path.

>is NOT going to exploit it?

"All actions have consequences", that's a natural law. They are committing criminal theft in hopes of getting as much fake money out of it before everything collapses.

That's you falling for the temptation of greed, which has severe consequences. They don't give you the money for free. It always comes with a catch. Case and point, Notch. He fell for greed and they took his creation away to the point where they erased his name from it.

I hope that image isn't from the finished book. That translates to 'hit of fat'.

Another interesting book on this topic is 'Opening the Xbox' by Dean Takashi. The author might be a piece of shit who can't beat a tutorial level but he's so bad at pushing the SJW agenda that his article about the harassment of women in the gaming industry made the entire thing seems like a joke, none of the women interviewed took serious offense to it and and were glad to gloat about the witty retorts they gave back. It was so ridiculous I felt he sabotaged it on purpose but the truth the veteran women in the gaming industry are just as fed up with the political correctness being pushed as anyone else as they aren't in a position to benefit from any of it.

Anyways there's a lot of behind the scenes exposition and explanation about how the industry works at the very highest levels, another good book not very related to this topic but worth looking into is 'The Race for a New Game Machine' which focuses on how Sony fucked up so badly with the PS3.

And if you think that those leaders are now loosing their industries, then I have to disappoint you, because they never gave a shit about any of them. >You operate your business in good faith because that is what makes a good society. If you are a souless greedy fuck than I am glad you have failed to succeed in life.

Morality, society, "good faith", is irrelevant for a large multinational for profit entity, and if anything, that has made them more successful than they've ever been by ignoring it.

There is no downside to acting in such methods in late stage capitalism, no company is going to be able to start up and take on any of the three large manufacturers, nor any software makers such as EA or the like.

Any promising company or property that has the potential to be the next fifa or madden half a billion a year card game is, but chooses not to, will likely end up being absorbed by a large company that can afford to somehow take a controlling portion if it ever goes public. Constraining yourself due to morality or other immaterial concepts will only cause the entity to be consumed by those who don't restrain themselves at this point in the game.

A small clique of companies controlling an industry is by default going to be inherently anti-consumer, that is a given. If normalfag consumers willingly pay for digital baseball cards, all it does is reinforce the conclusions these companies has already come up with.

Unless consumers either stop consuming these sorts of practices, or an outside entity intervenes in a legislative capacity, there is no reason for them to stop.

Worse still it'll still be working for future generations.

They certainly took great pains to make sure this would never happen again with their products and the RROD in the OP is a good reminder of how they're willing to deliberately release hardware with a 25% failure rate and lose tens of billions of dollars just to make sure the consumers sticks to the upgrade treadmill.

The problem with too much money, means too much power, means political power, means deliberately designing laws that benefit the big, while bleeding the small out of business. They also love to add millions of licenses as roadblocks for startups, so that they don't even try. These are organized crime tactics disguised by corrupting the legal system.

Fair enough, especially for head-to-head games where a 2-5 minute match cost 2 credits. I'll argue as a counter-point that if you got good enough, you could 1CC games and play half an hour (or more) for a quarter.

>selling proto dlc at the same price as a full fledged game

what, expansion packs were like… you made an expansion pack INSTEAD of a whole new game because it was way less content and wasnt worth as much otherwise it would just be game 2 instead of game:more

expansion packs were not 60 bucks they were like 20, as opposed to now where micro content we would never see in those days costs like 10 or 20 and expansion packs dont exist and are just sold as whole new games for 60

an example of an expansion pack selling for full price is left 4 dead 2, it came out exactly a year after and basically just added some new enemies, it very much should have been an expansion and therefore have half the cost it did, but those days are gone

What are you talking about? The consumer is irrelevant. They would sooner close their doors than put out quality products.

There's nothing wrong with opinions per se. The problem is everything nowadays is a hugbox/echo chamber and you're not allowed to challenge someone's views or otherwise dissent. If you disagree, you must be 'toxic' or a 'troll'.

>no gatekeeping just let every shit eater in

It's not 'no gatekeeping', it's a complete lack of standards (i.e. it's not about WHO is allowed to eat shit, it's that people are willing to eat ANY shit at all). And thanks to the above, if you try explaining to the masses you'll be labeled as toxic and ousted

>no brigading or witch hunts

Paying to go use equipment that is (at the time) too expensive/impractical to take home isn't the same. You might as well equate paying each time you use a slip-and-slide at home to paying to use the big slide at a waterpark. The business models must operate differently, so some things acceptable to one are not for the other.

You just described issues that happen when you don't own something, which reinforces the point of how shitty things have gotten when looked at it that way. Arcades/renting have advantages like being able to use something a little without having to pay for it all, and access to things impractical to own. Now we are paying in pieces for game content after paying full price for the game. You didn't have to pay $60 for each arcade game before feeding them quarters.

Then when Mortal Kombat was making waves, Sega took the opportunity by establishing themselves as the only system to have the uncensored version.

>shitloads of people

When you use such a broad term like that, are you also including women? What about Brazilians? Was Sonic the hedgehog popular with the Chinese? When looking at the degradation of the industry, one shouldn't look at the size of it, for there are many things which became better with growth. Instead, one should look at the type of people which entered the industry, thus causing its decay. That is why everyone starts the faggotry about le 2007, when the Big Bazinga Theory encouraged the influx of the uninitiated into gaming, among other things. Make no mistake, while gaming was large back then, it was still an acquired taste, and you can prove this theory yourself by trying to make a normalfag play a game pre-2007. From the start, they will grumble and complain about the bad graphics, difficulty and lack of cutscenes. Products are always made with an audience in mind. It just so happens that the audience has changed.

People act like everyone is immune to advertising and forget that little children wanting to be involved in some capacity is the reason Fortnite pjs exist at Walmart. The industry is now and never was just about the quality of games. Pac Man cereal and board games targeted the audiences that weren't allowed to play video games for economic and religious/parental reasons. All companies can make whatever they want, and whoever buys it has their right to do that to. The state of the industry by industry standards is fairly good as market demand is stronger than ever despite the quality of games going down. The loudest demands get made first which is free to play death match for losers with low self esteem needing quick victories over people they assume are worthy and not handicapped children mashing the oversized keypad. The phrase a sucker is born every minute is older than the oldest person alive on the planet. The smart thing to do is make the games you want to play yourself.

Sarcasm aside, after that there were 219 games released the year after launch, so I'll just list the ones that weren't completely forgettable:

>D

>King's Field II

>King's Field III

>Battle Arena Toshinden 2

>Crash Bandicoot

>Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain

>Resident Evil

>Tobal No. 1

>Wipeout XL

>Tekken 2

>Twisted Metal 2

>Persona

>Suikoden

>Tomb Raider

>Samurai Shodown III: Blades of Blood

Except Crash and Tekken, none of those were worth getting a PSX over whatever other platform. Now TWO YEARS in, out of 215 games released that year, all that sticks out is:

>Battle Arena Toshinden 3

>Dynasty Warriors

>Final Fantasy VII

>Bushido Blade

>Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

>Armored Core

>Soul Blade

>Vandal Hearts

>Wild Arms

>Tomb Raider II

>Monster Rancher

Finally a handful, A HANDFUL, of the games the PSX is famous for. And finally 3 years after launch, out of 277 games:

>Final Fantasy Tactics

>Dead or Alive

>Breath of Fire III

>Klonoa: Door to Phantomile

>Grand Theft Auto

>Crash Bandicoot: Warped

>Bushido Blade 2

>Brave Fencer Musashi

>Resident Evil 2

>Tomba!

>Mega Man Legends

>Tenchu: Stealth Assassins

>Parasite Eve

>Spyro The Dragon

>Tekken 3

>Xenogears

>Metal Gear Solid

>Twisted Metal III

tl;dr:

PSX WAS FAKE NEWS FOR AT LEAST A YEAR AFTER LAUNCH

As someone who actually was old enough to get a first generation PSX on its launch, most of those games were actually huge among Asian gamers, if only because they were very different to what Segay and Nintencuck were doing, starting with being on CDs instead of carts. It also really helped Soyny that the pirates immediately found a way to unlock the console which caused massive sales numbers in Asia. Imagine being able to buy a full PSX game for a dollar. Even the children of fucking tuk tuk drivers in the Philippines had a giant library of PSX games during its heyday because of this. There is even a rumor in Southeast Asia that Sony themselves intentionally unlocked their console because they were aiming for that specific market, which was having an economic recovery at the time after a huge regional market crash.

Microsoft wasn't the first, but they were the first ones who made it extremely easy and convenient for publishers and developers to add paid DLC and for consumers to buy it.

It's just like the iPhone. Apple was far from the first one to make a phone with a music player that was similar to modern day smart phones. But they were the first ones to make it easy to buy and easy to use. And they were successful and made the smart phone concept mainstream.

The first one is not usually the one who makes it big. It's usually the one who polishes it and gets it into the hands of normalfags. And Xbox brought DLC and microtransactions into the hands of normalfags. In fact, there was no escaping exposure to it on Xbox 360.

Nearly all of those games were also on SCD/Sat/N64/3DO/PC-FX/Wintel/Mac, a lot were even 16-bit ports.

>It's just like the iPhone

This is who actually deserves OP's wrath. Apple, Google, and (to a possibly greater extent) earlier telco-owned J2ME/iMode game stores. Literally every single cancerous thing OP complained about actually started here: Walled garden distribution, monthly fees for everything, DLC, pay2win, social integration, all of it. The only blame going further back is Nintendo resurrecting consoles after the crash, which PC/arcade survived totally unscathed. If Nintendo hadn't done that, we wouldn't have loss-leader pricing or licensed devkits that helped shape the evils of the cellphone market.

Like I said, I only listed games that were big prestigious attractions in the day, especially exclusives. There were a ton of other great games I left out because they were IMHO niche (Azure Dreams, Devil Dice, PaRappa, MDK), or because in spite of being big hits they were far too generic to justify someone purchasing a PSX over other platforms (i.e.: annual sportsball roster updates, Japanese cardgames, more generic racing games).

This, bring in the law. Anyone conflating business models (P2W, gambling, etc.) with free expression is just regurgitating laissez-faire corporate propaganda.

Same goes for any kind of appliance nowadays, honestly. For old computers and appliances you could get service manuals that detailed everything you needed to know in order to fix something. Also, the worth of a brand was in its longevity, and durability was the norm - now it's planned obsolescence (thanks, apple).

Marketing had ideas about that 'your grandson will use it one day'. And that's exactly the case with the old Braun hairdryer and Solingen electric trimmer that I got from my grandfather. They still fucking work.

Easily solved, the wear on the rubbery pads is fixed by getting new pads, which are easy to get. This also includes the conductive carbon material.

For devices that have the conductive material on the board instead, in these cases a new layer of conductive carbon also fixes it.

Microsoft is hugely responsible for making the hobby gayer.
