I've seen blander but he definitely wasn't great. But I didn't really expect him to be, I had very low expectations since Shulk wasn't a deep character either. In fact, I have very low expectations for JRPG characters and especially JRPG protagonists in general, good written JRPG characters are rare.

Honestly, the first Xenoblade is just pretty good when it comes right down to it. Nothing it does is particularly amazing, but it came out at a time when so many JRPGs (and RPGs in general) were dogshit that I'm not surprised the Operation Rainfall guys were desperate for it. I will say it's super impressive for a Wii game, in most respects.

I'm going to make a case for Poppi really being best girl. If we're being honest, the best written character is Poppi, although that might be personal bias towards robot characters. Most scenes with her in the final chapters were really good (you know the ones I mean). If you're just going off waifu potential, unless you're some degenerate who only likes oppai loli guilty or somebody who hates robot girls (very fair) then I don't see any reason why Poppi would not be the optimal choice. The best way is the 3k item. You have to do a DLC quest for it. It is the best way every other option takes hours of grinding. This way takes a bit of setup for the resources to make it and it is a late game quest, but this is also a late game grind. Sending guys out does near nothing. Battle takes near the entire game. If we're being honest, Xeno- as a metaseries is defined by waifus, although most of them are more in-universe and on the directorial end. Elly is not only the girl that basically kicks off the entirety of Episodes 2-5 (and maybe 6 but we don't know what the fuck that is) I'm pretty sure she was designed to be Takahashi's ideal woman (oddly his self insert was probably supposed to be Karellen, meaning he cucked himself). Although, getting back to 2, Jin is just a slightly different Karellen which would mean that Lora is that game's Elly, which seems to imply that maybe Takahashi has moved on from some things. But with the Zohar showing up again, the view never changes, does it? Your hometown always burns down. Your spaceship crashes. The earth is destroyed. The girl is the perfect waifu to control the brilliance of life. The villain is always the acting god, and you bear fangs against him. When it comes to Pokemon I'm never sure if it's Game Freak fucking up or the emulator. Freezing on every cutscene seems like a Game Freak thing. Xenoblade 2 has been out longer, but it's also a bit more intensive than Pokemon. On the other hand Pokemon is notorious for running like garbage anyway so I can't say for sure.

No. Xenoblade 1's combat was pretty great. Unless your standards are Dungeons and Dragons. Xenoblade 2's combat isn't nearly as deep as 1's no matter what metric you use and its systems actively work to counteract it. In fact it's just not fun in general. the combat is slow as balls until you hit the end game. X and 1 both pretty much dumped you into it and it didn't hold off on many mechanics. Where as 2 literally has tutorials up to chapter 4 and there's even one in chapter 7. Then there's the idle gaming mechanics and the Gacha mechanics. 1 and X had broken combat systems but you actually had to work to break those games at least and the game somewhat punished you with spike damage if you did break it too much.

Imitation and reference isn't a stand in for quality. Just because it incorporates elements of it doesn't mean it can compare. Xenoblade 2's symbolism isn't even half as coherent as Xenogears and the plot itself is dumb as shit and full of holes. You can pretty obviously tell there was some major executive meddling going on behind the scenes considering how much religious content was censored. I'd bet money that the original idea behind it was closer to Xenogears than the retarded shonen shit we got on release. The characters are outright dumb as a sack of bricks. But you can talk about symbolism and meaning all you want. The actual plot itself is just full on ass.

Just to name a few problems:

I feel like you've missed some things but it's reasonable you feel that way and if the game didn't appeal to you that's fine. I'm somebody who thinks Link to the Past ruined the Zelda franchise, I know how you feel. I am really curious what the hell you find fun about Xenoblade 1's combat? The gem system is about the depth for out of battle customization, while in battle it mostly comes down to occasional positioning and using your moves at the right time, and while 2 does start off much slower, even at the start you have canceling auto-attacks into arts and the possibly unintentional stutter-stepping to get off auto-attacks faster. Despite all the combat tutorials I feel people also miss out on how important some aspects can be, like good pouch item choice (of course some of the better ones aren't available at the beginning, slow start and all that). I'd recommend Torna if you haven't played it but I'm going to be honest I don't think it would change your opinion. Maybe it's because I didn't get caught up in the Xenoblade hype but I don't really get the appeal of the first game aside from it just being good. Again, maybe I've got weird standards, I don't know. One last thing, X does limit Overdrive and various elements of robot combat, not to mention the best way to deal with their version of the augment system is to look up a guide which isn't optimal, but I also admit that's still less awful than the pacing of 2's combat stuff.

I wholly understand that the Xenoblade style combat system is not for everyone. It's got it's quirks. But 2's is genuinely less complex than 1's. If you know anything about 1's combat system you can utterly break 2 easy.

2's Chain attacks are even more overpowered than in 1 and a hundred times more exploitable since they can be controlled now.

2 has no tension.

Positional combat means jack fucking shit, where you could make builds in 1 that relied on it. They outright removed X's high ground/low ground mechanics.

In general build variety in 2 suffers. In 1 pretty much every party member was viable. there's strategies to use every single one of them in post game fights. Even Sharla who is notoriously considered the least useful has her uses in some strategies. Meanwhile in 2 there's a fair few blades who are just outright useless with "better versions".

It also doesn't help that the arts pallet is worse, with only 3 arts a pop and weapon switching is hidden behind a needless cooldown. And tying arts charging primarily behind auto attacking isn't a major issue but then they tied auto attacking to STANDING STILL. Meaning in order to play the game you're literally forced to sit there and wait, instead of maybe getting into a better position while your arts charge on a short 5-20 second timer and then unleashing a decent arts combo to deal a decent amount of damage, now your primary focuse is on putting orbs on enemies to unleash a stupidly overpowered chain attack that one shots most enemies and can three shot most bosses, that is if you can get all those orbs on before the game triggers a mid battle cutscene. The arts system in general feels like it railroads you into certain arts usage. Situational arts are just useless now.

Enemy detection is now simplified so now there's just the immediate radius around them and a short cone where in 1 and X they had radius, sight, and Ether detection.

The equipment system is needlessly convoluted and ass. You can complain about the gym system, but then the equipment system in 2 is so much fucking worse. Pouch items are retarded especially when you combine them with shop deeds.

Then there's the lack of secondary systems. The "Affinity chart" in 2 is just a more complicated, more grindy version of 1's skill tree. With a REAL affinity chart no where in sight. There's no monster compendium like in X, there's no collectopedia. The item collection system is outright ass. Skill checks needlessly slow down gameplay. X had the PERFECT system where it combined EASY skill checks that you could run by and do and the orb system from 1 and it was perfect. Just do that. But no, you have to have this stupid "Need certain blades in the party for certain checks" Which is compounded with the merc mission system which in itself is BEYOND stupid. Xenoblade 2 just feels like a mobile cash in spinoff of 1 sometimes but without the microtransactions. What secondary systems did we get? Tiger Tiger and the Blade Gacha system. How fun.

there's things I can praise about it too. Auto Attack and Arts cancelling were great IMO, and should be kept around. I prefer healing arts over Potions because it just outright interrupts the flow of combat. The Soul Voice system is leagues and above better than 2's weird party command system, and 1's chain attack and arts system were better.

I genuinely have trouble thinking of a single system 2 had that X and 1 had that was genuinely improved upon. Some of the new stuff they added was fantastic, but overall it doesn't feel worth it. 1 is still a more complex game than 2. It also doesn't help that 2's post game bosses are a joke with all the better difficulty options and better postgame bosses locked behind DLC. Torna was also a MUCH better take on the Xenoblade 2 battle system than the base game. The Camp system took all that stupid shop bullshit from 2 and compressed it perfectly. There's still some stupid shit to it but it's a million times less noticeable thanks to it being easily accessed at campsites.

I didn't notice that, but I also don't see how that's relevant since if you move after the first hit you still have to wait for the character to start back up again which takes a few seconds and you might of as well went through the whole combo again. Not only that but the game actively rewards you with cancelling with bigger damage bonuses on final hit.

The point in the game this becomes irrelevant is also the point in the game timers become irrelevant.

The entire equipment system is ass. For one pouch items are needlessly restrictive when they're on the timer. You can only hold a certain amount of each until you get to the second half of the game when shop deeds become readily available where you can finally upgrade your pouch to hold max of some items. It's needless grinding for one. For two, just fucking make it a permanent equipment slot. There's literally no point for it to be a timer aside from mobile game shit.

Similar reasons for the Blade equipment. It's needlessly only in one menu. You CANNOT unequip them after you have equipped them, meaning if you want to swap builds for a single blade you have to grind super bosses for an optimal setup based on doing tedious tasks like farming EXP or farming gold or just max damage. The menu system in Xenoblade 2 all around makes the game worse than it already is and amplifies major issues it has with the equipment primarily being that it's less customizeable than 1's equipment system.

You're saying that like it's a good thing. In Xenoblade 1 the damage boost was only 25%. Ether attacks also always were critical hits, but Xenoblade 2's ether attacks are more or less pointless leftovers because Xeno games need Ether. Not to mention some enemies have spike damage/effects based on being toppled so you actually had to know the enemy you're fighting, but Spike damage is completely negligable in 2. This is also ignoring the fact that one of the major difficulties in 1 was getting certain enemies into a toppled state, which required careful Chain attack setup. In 1 chain attacks and their damage boosts were based on the arts you used, you had to choose between arts on your own pallet and strategize the best arts to use to get max damage which you weren't even guaranteed because Chain Attacks weren't a hard set number while in 2 you just have to choose between 3 blades and the damage boosts are pretty much a given no matter what you used, and they go on as long as you have orbs. They actually have a max cap of turns now due to how easy it is to exploit orb breaking.

"Easy" you say. What happens if you need a skill check for a certain blade but he's off on a merc mission but you have to switch out for 3 other blades, sifting through 2's AWFUL sorting system to find the other 3 blades with the level 1 version of the skill so you can stack them up and then swap your main fighting party out. completely freezing game progress for minutes at a time while you sort through your amassed collection of blades at this point. As opposed to 1 where you literally just have to run slightly off-trail or in X where you could run slightly off trail or stop at that neat looking wreckage for a quick 5 second button mash session based on a stat that ALL characters share.

2 is a decent game combat wise, but only in the post game. Everything before that is a braindead slog. First half is pure handholding and piecemeal mechanics while the second half of the game is just you blowing through shit, and the final like, 2 chapters is just you preparing for post game where the real gameplay starts.

I'd say 2's side content is even worse. 1 had multiple things to collect and minor bits of lore hidden away in sidequests and the entirety of Colony 6 as a pet project. The H2H's in 1 were fantastic insights into the characters.

2 just has blade collection and its sidequests are fewer and far between which isn't exactly a bad thing since 1 and X had some repetitive quests but the writing didn't get any better for it despite the major cutback in the amount. Blade Quests are obnoxious unless you genuinely like the characters and H2H's don't offer half the insight they did in 1. Where in 1 they helped explain motivation and characters in 2 they're mostly slice of life anime plots, as far as the ones I completed go, I'm not going to pretend that I didn't give up looking for them around Chapter 8 or so, at that point I was so tired of the characters that I didn't really care to learn anything else about them. in 1 I ate that shit up.

RNG can really get to people depending on the game. For me it depends how much I can game the system. In 2 it's super easy to get rare Blades, if you know what you're doing and how the pull mechanics work. In X it's hard to get the equipment with the traits you want because it's completely random. I guess the latter technically applies to getting high level common Blades with shit like Orb Master, so 2 doesn't completely mitigate it.

The blade switching mechanic wasn't in 1. It's actually a glorified version of X's weapon switch mechanic. In 1 each character had a set weapon and arts table. They were all pretty varied in playstyle but the real customization came in armor and skill links.

In X they change this. Characters had a set class and classes had set weapons and weapons had arts unique to them all characters had one ranged and one melee weapon and you could freely swap between them with a button or it auto swapped when you used an arts specific to that. You could combo out of your sword into you gun and back into your sword if you needed to. This game had a retarded as fuck party system, even worse than 2's though. Out of 18 fucking party members 2 were almost ALWAYS required for everything except the randomly generated missions and it doesn't matter all that much since there was only like 3 other party members that weren't completely useless.

IMO every character should have been customizable like Cross or at least have more customization options. But I'm getting off topic.

In 2 you can no longer freely jump between weapons unless you have some ridiculous arts charging build that negates the timer, which is post game and locked behind affinity grinding, meaning the battles either end up taking way longer than they should because you have wait to step up a decent arts combo, and you're probably going to be stuck with that last weapon for the next minute or so while you wait for the blade to recharge.

Not to mention the AI in 2 gives Melia a run for her money. Even if you figure out which party members prioritize blade/driver combos (the game sure as hell doesn't tell you) they're still spotty as fuck in actually using the arts, and worse, if you DON'T wanna launch to grind out some damage then you're pretty fucked unless you just like running around with nia and Morag in your secondary party slots. If you wanna play as them? Tough luck, there isn't a third party member that prioritizes blade combos. It's something I liked a lot in Torna, it's just a combat option in the game. Pretty much all of Torna's combat is better than the main game.

It really just feels like they're slowly making it an ARPG instead of the weird queued system they have now. I don't want that.

I'd argue they should all be the same menu because I ran into many issues where I needed to send an equipped blade on a merc mission and I wanted to immediately replace them. There is a solid difference between having optional bathing suit outfits and the handful of skimpy gear for X (that were also available for men) that you have to buy and having half the cast basically naked and you can't change their outfits, unless you pay for DLC.

I know the 3DS version of the saves just had some sort of shifting done compared to the Wii version, but since it's a complete overhaul who knows what data will be where anymore. No one ever made a save converter for the wii→3ds xenoblade. Probably not gonna happen. It makes even less sense this time around. I wanted a save converter before too but for a proper remake like this why would you want to not play the game by having an endgame NG+ 100% savefile. You will have nothing to do and unless they change how NG+ works so you can change your level afterwards like XB2 you will steamroll through the game.

Thats one thing I'd like to see changed a bit, for NG+ to have more common NG+ features so it can be more akin to playing like a new play through but also with more bonuses. Also things like cut scene viewer, model viewer, music player like in the 3ds port. A bestiary like in XBX but more useful than that one. Lots of things like these would be great.

I didn't beat Xenoblade 2, but i do know a bit about Shounen, and Rex from what i saw is by far the weakest, most ineffective character in his own story.
