I'm about to download Jane's Air Combat sims (Jane was curiously the name of my grandmother) and wondering if they're any good?

Jane's were once the pinnacle of military hardware simulations. Where computers couldn't make due in graphics like they can know, they took full advantage of the processing power for mathematics necessary to make these work as realistically as possible.

The last great flight sim that I know of was Falcon 4.0 by MicroProse. Flight simulations didn't seem like the niche genre they are now.

I got them from the Internet Archive. while I've known they've always existed, these games are huge HD space consumers

I can't speak from experience on Jane's series, but good choices for combat flight sims now are:

Falcon BMS (essentially an expanded Falcon 4.0, expanded a bit into aircraft outside the F-16 family)

DCS (Full autism aircraft modules as well as some simpler ones that don't require 600+ page manuals. Currently has a version of the P-51 and Su-25 for free as a "demo".)

IL-2 series for all your WWII needs.
