subject says it all, games you think could have had potential if things just turned out different.

I'll say NeoTokyo, the aesthetic was there, the multiplayer was somewhat solid for a mod game, and the OST (despite not coming with the game) is phenomenal.

the only problem was that it wasn't as updated due to devs focusing on their lives and the community slowly died out, it was up there as an interesting multiplayer cyber punk game that was heavily inspired by GiTS judging from it's art direction.

what games do you think had potential to be great but was squandered by forces that dev's couldn't control or dev's themselves did to their game?

I know I will get shit for this but I think ps4 spiderman would be a pretty good game if they kept the liberal pandering out, fixed the damn out of bound glitches, and made the stealth sections more fun to play by giving you all the tools sooner rather than waiting until the end of the fucking game. The game felt like a faster, tighter bamham game that really treated the IP with care.

Not a game, but a mod. Deus Ex had a mod called Terminus Machina, made by this Hawaiian commie. Every time I've loaded it up, it leaves me so conflicted, because it has, among other things:

Actually good and fairly "realistic" wireless hacking

Predator drones that will fucking nuke you if you get detected in some spots outside

Starvation as a mechanic – not hunger, starvation. You start out literally starving to death and can be driven to slaughter cats and help bomb a mcdonalds for food.

Graphene screen tattoo on your face that you can use to make you look like other people with a ghetto scrapped-together 3d camera made from smartphones.

Did i mention crafting? And the ANFO IEDs you can make with it?

You get the most crushing sorta becoming post-human world, where you really feel just how much the not-super-rich are being left behind. You can feel the terror of needing to dodge security cameras by either sticking to the darkest alleyways, and eventually making that face camo shit, all while trying not to starve. And you can eventually get a fucking hydroponics bay, eith a dedicated skill (don't eat the gmo "corn" if you know what's good…) and make a hemp jacket with solar panels in the back because of course you fucking can.

Yet… it's so unfinished, the guy just seems to have made like 30% of a mod. It's got very rich mechanics and is well developed in that way, yet he just seemed to stop caring about the level past a very noticable point. Worse still is any time there's a major conversation. Devman seems to be honestly kinda autistic and super commie. Not in a /pol/ "uhhhh he said white people bad" way, i mean literally can't stop from making every other character reference Marx. It's sad to me because the mod's so fucking cool as a framework, yet so weakling in execution.

had they organically improved on what the foundation they laid with the previous games in a modern engine without following retarded nu-game trends

>mgs series

had they made the stealth more like thief instead of goofy and arcade-ish, toned down cutscenes and maybe added an optional first person mode

>splinter cell series

had they made the lighting not over exaggerated bullshit, the controls not clunky, and borrowed the same kind of attention to detail and AI mgs games have

I'll also add, that a stealth game can only work properly if the setting is low tech and/or the wilderness. that is why I never enjoyed mgs 1 and 2's stealth and most of splinter cell's. otherwise it's simply not believable and out of context.

Megaman Legends. No, Seriously.

The games had more potential to be something amazing than anything else in the franchise. They take place on a world so far advanced that it rose to an apex civilization, collapsed, and then rebuilt based around mining for treasure from the submerged/buried ruins of the prior great civilization, one so amazing no one even begins to understand it. It then turns out that the characters you've been meeting are actually just robot hybrids created by the actual humans who created space-paradise, who then left the planet, left two cute brown lolis behind to manage space paradise, and then died out. The general conflict of the games was that the people left behind on earth are supposed to undergo a hard reset (mass genocide) once every so often to keep them from becoming too advanced; the remains of the ruins and the purpose of space paradise is generally to irradicate everyone on earth once in a while.

Unfortunately Capcom just sort of shat the games out so they could claim they had made a 3D Megaman game. The only things that hold up about them anymore are the art style and characterization, beyond that the games were mechanically dated the instant they released. However I still believe that the world and the potential it had could make for an amazing story and experience if the ruins weren't designed like complete garbage and the old Megaman mechanics of acquiring weapons from defeated enemies was brought back. The games had a lot of potential but Capcom just never did anything with it.

Splinter Cell and Metal Gear are spy movies. They accomplish what they set out to do and nothing more; what you want is a different game entirely. If everything was scrutinized under the lens of realism, you'd end up with games that play too similarly to each other.

Mario. Specifically, 3D Mario. It has the potential to be, at the very least, my favorite games of all time. In fact, 64 is one of my all time favorites. But holy shit have all of them been disappointing.

Mario 64 was limited by age of course, but the stage themes are annoyingly basic, there's few actual platforming challenges, every single boss is trash and there are far too many stars that are just "go to place with no challenge", like the "shoot to platform" stars in stages 1, 2 and 3.

Sunshine was worse in nearly every regard. If having Mario 3-esque simplistic themes wasn't bad enough for 64, here, have one single theme for every stage and have them all feel identical. It had platforming at times, but it was needless considering you had FLUDD to bypass all of it. I think barring glitches (of which there are a good few), it's borderline impossible to die in Sunshine. Oh, and bosses were fucking shit. Worse than 64, somehow.

Galaxy had to casualize the shit out of itself because the gravity thing was far too much for casual normalfags, so nearly every jump could be cleared with a single jump. And despite space being the perfect fucking excuse, the absolutely best excuse they could ever have to have unique stages (it's fucking space, anything can be out there, fuck you nigger), the majority of stages just had the same shit generic themes as Mario 3 did. The bosses were slightly better than 64, sure, but not really focused on platforming too much, which was shit for a god damn platformer.

Odyssey once again decided to sell itself on a fucking gimmick. The moveset in the game was great but it was rarely useful since you instead just had to do whatever bullshit gimmick the game wanted out of you. The stage themes were an improvement at times, but it still had obligatory sand level, which not only was the worst stage in the game, but the longest. The bosses were centered on gimmicks too, so still not great. If not for the god damn capture mechanic, the game would have been phenomenal.

And for all the shit it gets, 3D World had by far the best bosses in 3D Mario. Sure, fuck Boom Boom but the other bosses were actually centered on platforming in a platforming game, can you believe that shit?

Not in general, no. Though the Long Jump has really been nerfed since 64 and never quite came back. It might be because the stages in general are smaller in 64, but it always seemed like you could go much further horizontally in 64 than in the other games.

As for

>what about all of the non-fluud zones?

You give the player a central gimmick and then you take it away because you realize that the game is broken and has no challenge thanks to your gimmick. It's the game designers admitting their game is shit. It's like when Odyssey subrooms forcefully take away Cappy, same exact deal.

The recent cod, despite having some of the worst micro transactions in history, was actually looking pretty good from the previews. They actually wanted to change things up a bit, but the players were not happy with the game balance/features, which led to it being scrapped and work had to be started from scratch several times, INCLUDING ABOUT A FEW MONTHS BEFORE LAUNCH

Here are a few tidbits:

>Originally a sequel to black ops 3, meaning that it would have this dystopian futuristic vibe to it

>Later got made as a prequel to black ops 3, so they could nostalgia bait people with the tacticool stuff, to remind them of modern warfare, I guess

>Originally, there were no kill streaks or extra grenades, game was very similar to overwatch

>Choosing your specialist was very important, they each had a special weapon, piece of equipment(no grenades of any kind, just whatever your specialist was equiped with), and their own wpecial killstreak. For example, only "Ruin" could equip a UAV, if you wanted a sentry gun, you had to select "Torque", an engineer

>In place of killstreaks, your "timers" on equipment, special weapons and abilities, as well as your unique killstreak, would fill up faster

>Additionally, in place of perks, you could add thing like jetpacks to your operator, rewarding you with abilities to run on walls, jump in the air ect. in place of other abilities. The "pick 10" system, as well as killstreaks and extra grenades, were literally only put in at the last minute

>Much more maps were planned, game came with like 4 remake maps due to lack of time

>In the end, the game plays more like siege, with a little bit of call of duty mixed in, but it was planned to be much more tactical tha it is now

>Singleplayer was planned

>Rather than having original characters, missions would revolve around specialists from multiplayer

>Campaign was planned to be 2vs2 coop, meaning that for the first time, you could play as the antagonists

>Every player would go about their business, doing different missions in "one gameworld", but if they happened to be in the same place, they could either help the other player out, or assassinate them, drastically changing the story

>Multiple endings and meaningful choices were planned, as the "heroes" could theoretically be both killed by the mercs that would serve as antagonists, essentially letting the game end with a villain victory, in some cases

>Activision said they needed to shit out a battle royale mode out of nowhere

>Single player fucking cancelled

>To salvage this, defs opt to downscale and make several missions that take place in unique gamespaces, have their own cutscenes and unique assets, but play just like multiplayer/blackout

>Not enough time, only a few cutscenes with no context exist in the game, "campaign mode" isnothing more than a page where the backstory for every specialist can be read, and a quick multiplayer tutorial mission for every specialist that you do 3 times in a row

>It's literally just "custom games" matches from multiplayer, on a specific map and game mode, there is no special assets to speak of

>Zombies mode is the only mode that came out more or less unscathed

>Altho there used to be plans for a faction system, which the devs did not have time for, and just couldn't be bothered to put in later

>As of now, game devs are tired of the game, working kn another project

>Only one more operation planned in fall, pretty much all the "original" content that was going to be in the game is in the game

>Nothing but more recolors, ports of weapons and maps from other games, activision is squeezing every last penny from microtransactions to make up for loss of profits

>All content that will come from the game from now on is literally made by 4 or 5 dudes in the back of the office, only zombies mode is planned to have any sort of major new updates, as they still have a full dev team for that(for now)

I don't care much about the microtransaction hell the game is, since I bought it for the zombies mode, but fuck me, that game that never was sounds good, especially the campaign, where 4 players would be thrown into the game was world, and could interact with one another. Is there a game like that? Not a coop game, but a coop game where you can fuck with a person's game if you kill them or do something else to significantly impact their current game, that sounds like an interesting concept, if implemented in a proper single player game

All Chivalry needed to do to stay alive and well was fix it's VERY FEW combat exploits and it would have been the only Medieval swordfighting game I'd need. But, just to rub salt in the wound, Chivalry 2 is going to be EGS exclusive and I have heard nothing but bad things and nothing about them fixing the issues with the first game.

The Jak and Daxter series could have been one of the greatest platformer series of all time if they had just refined and improved on the first game. The foundation they had was great. Jak and Daxter is already one of the better platformers on the ps2; it was just a little rough around the edges. All the pieces were there for them to make a real masterpiece. But instead Naughty Dog decided it would be a good idea to turn their cartoonish 3D platformer into a gritty open world game with an emphasis on awkward third-person shooting and racing missions in an attempt to capitalize on the popularity of GTA. Jak 3 tried to fix things, but it still wasn't of the same caliber as the first game.

Precisely, man, it even had some fairly good music that set the atmosphere just right, where outside feels oppressive, and the menu feels like you've been dropped in an abrasive electronic hellscape (mean that in a positive way). Yet conversations still have that right feel from dx preserved, at least until anyone speaks for too long.

For all that it's shit in some ways, I still find myself sometimes thinking of it years later just from how lucrative copying some of the mechanics would be. Also, if you ever do try it, read the descriptions on shit. That's one of those things that confuses me so much, like the writing on items is SO GOOD, descriptions can change based on your skills and knowledge, and it's also one of the few cases where I've seen genuinely good crafting – where it feels like you're just scrapping occasionally useful parts from broken shit, rather than making a nuke in 5 seconds from some raw materials. It's just such a shame when the probably genuine autism suddenly shows itself the moment any sort of social interactions comes up, alongside it kinda running out of steam within 40 minutes, even just in level design.

Such an amazing movement system trapped behind bad level design. It's frustrating that the game still teleports you to places that you can now safely explore because they didn't update the level design of the older planets. Instead they're putting focus on creating empty open worlds.

Gothic 3. It was highly anticipated amongst the fans and it was meant to be something big. In the end it was a buggy trainwreck that doesn't make any sense without community patches and mods.

>hardest part is trying to find information on uniforms and other general stuff

I am guessing you haven't started actually programming it

no, im an artist, i model shit animate it and texture it.

once I can into code it wont be that hard since the combat isnt that complex anyway, only thing that will fuck me up is the AI + stealth. and then theres the issue of

>do i include the control scheme/camera from MGS3S

OR

>do I make it, its own seperate thing with a different theme?

sticking with making it, its own thing because I doubt anyone wold want to play with a worse control scheme.

Finding references of shit is actually quite difficult most of the time, spent a week learning and modelling shit from various countries.

I dont want any of the games I make to be more generic mutt shit

Stealth wouldn't really be that bad (especially considering how it was made in MGS4), you could just attribute a certain colour value to textures and then have the game check nearby walls and objects in contact with the playermodel (along with the current stance, current action and light intensity) to see how close their value is to the one attributed to the playermodel. Based on the distance from the texture and the difference in colour, you could attribute a stealth value, which would change your playermodel's transparency. In most cases it would probably be something like 40% transparency at most, while for someone playing as Snake you could let it go as far as 80% at most. And then to balance is slightly, you could give a delay until it reaches that maximum value and possibly even have the value go down the longer someone looks at the stealthed player without breaking eyecontact. For the AI it is entirely dependent on what it is you are setting out to let them do (like having them communicate with each other, flank the player, clear rooms, possibly even have them be affected by morale).

Just take old uniforms for different countries (possibly even ceremonial uniforms) then, since current ones tend to be pretty much the same but with different patterns.
