Games with good examples of robots or AI characters?
A pet peeve of mine is when a "robot" character doesn't act robotic at all. Robots who indistinguishably look and act the same as a human character would just feels like lazy writing imo. I take this issue with Roll (mega man 11) and Android 21 (dragon ball fighterz) in particular. They don't have a robotic-sounding voice like Aigis (persona 3) or SHODAN (system shock 2), don't have an obviously robotic body like Robo (chrono trigger) or Legion (mass effect), and Roll / Android 21 display "personalities" and "emotional reactions" like a human would. Nothing about them gives away the fact that they're robots.
I mean, if you're going to write a robot character as if they were a normal biological human, it seems like a waste. Not once throughout Mega Man 11 did Roll come across to me as a robot. We're just told she's one, despite doing nothing robotic throughout the game.

At that point, you're just dealing with genetic splicing and not robotics. A totally different scientific area. So why not just call Android 21 a genetic experiment based off of Buu? Android 21 is honestly more similar to Baby than Android 15. There's no need to bring in the word "android" and all the mechanical connotations that come along with it.

I saw an anime movie recently called Metropolis. If I could rewrite Roll based of another character, it'd be as Tima from that movie. A film that showed that you can create a cute robot girl while still retaining the robotic mannerisms.

Frankly, a beep booping robot would be more believable writing for a robot character imo. At least you'd be able to tell that it's a robot from the way it speaks.
I can buy that Mega Man and Proto Man are robots because they've shown ingame that they're clearly not human. You can see Proto Man reduced to a scrap pile and still be able to talk just fine with you. Mega Man's endoskeleton can be seen in the Game Boy games to show how inhuman he truly is.
I just can't buy that Roll is a robot though. She hasn't done anything to suggest that she is one.

I guess "Android" was just Dr. Gero's favorite umbrella term for his robots then. Even when the more biological Android 21 was not as mechanical as Android 16, who got his head blown and you could see the hardware in his neck.

One thing I’ll always appreciate about Conman was that he was just an artist that wanted to make a game about a little robot. It’s why capcom had such a focus on good art for a while.

It's important to note that the word android itself originally just meant artificial human. Specifically artificial male human. Its not "an-droid", it's "andr-oid": man-like. Just like gyn-oid is woman like. The term was not restricted to mean electro-mechanical human like it seems to have become now.
Actually neither was the term Robot either. The robots in RUR were something like Blade Runner type replicants as well.

Since "gynoid" never appeared until 1985, it's really hard to believe that every single use of "android" from the 1880s until then specifically referred to male artificial humans- the focus was on the artificial, not whether they had dicks or not.
