BOTW was such a success because it was a "realistic open world" game, but an idealized form of real, because Japan still knows that people play vidya to escape. The game had its own physics system that everything adhered to. Townspeople had their own shit going on instead of standing there waiting for you to talk to them. It took forever to get somewhere, but there was beautiful scenery to enjoy on the way. There was wildlife, but no poisonous snakes waiting to bite your ankle if you stepped in the wrong place. There were bugs, but no spiders or ticks or mosquitos or horseflies or gnats. There was temperature fluctuations and weather, but you, the player, didn't have to feel it and it didn't greatly impair your adventuring. And best of all, there was an objective evil that everyone agreed on wanting dead. No NPC in BOTW would arrest you for killing bokoblins, because they're monsters and that's that. In real life you aren't allowed to kill the monsters because nobody agrees with you that they're evil. At best you suffer through years of a broken court system to get them arrested, where they then get free housing and 3 meals a day paid for by your tax dollars until they're released early on good behavior and go right back to being a monster again, and nobody cares.

Yes, that's why i stopped playing open world games. After Kingdom Come Deliverance i grew really tired of them, specially with that game where every mission is walk or ride for at least four minutes to the next part of the mission where you'll get one minute worth of dialogue and then you'll have to walk or ride again for four minutes, rinse and repeat. What kind of shit is that?
For exploration, hub based or immersive sims are enough for me. That said, there's a lot of good modern games that aren't open world trash anon.
