Are there any remakes/reimagings/whatever which are undoubtedly an improvement over its source material?
The most recent example I can think of is The Ninja Warriors Once Again, an update for a beat 'em up called The Ninja Warriors Again for the SNES (which itself is a remake of The Ninja Warriors for the arcades). It only adds and polishes tons of shit:
>visuals have received a massive upgrade, the pixel art animations are much more detailed and fluid and backgrounds have been completely redrawn to pose more detail
>adds two new playable characters, a big titty shortstack ninja princess with tentacle arms and a huge fucking robot four times the size of a regular enemy who can also transform into a Metal Gear
>existing characters have been given new moves, Kunoichi can do a spinning forward overhead slice and throw shuriken/kunais, Ninja can swing his nunchaku on demand to juggle enemies for big damage, and Kamaitachi can fire quills from his back and do a Psycho Crusher
>expands the screen space from 4:3 to 16:9 so more than four enemies can be on screen at any time
>also adds couch co-op which the SNES version lacked
>soundtrack has been remade and sounds pretty good, but the option to play the original SNES or arcade soundtracks is also included
https://www.invidio.us/watch?v=-bkzwGErK4k
Other notable examples probably include Pathologic 2 and Ys: Oath in Felghana.

How the hell Ice Pick Lodge got talked into letting their remake be named as though it's a sequel is beyond me but it still makes me angry how it's not just one of the things their publisher did to sabotage the game's release but the most blatant of the things their publisher did to sabotage the game's release.

Pokemon Leafgreen/Fire Red and Heartgold/Soul Silver:
>Fixed the glitches
>Games much more balanced, thanks to the changes that happened between generations(More moves, steel and dark typing, abilities, physical/special split in case of the latter, evolutions to make some otherwise mediocre pokemon better ect.)
>Little bit of extra content, but doesn't ruin what was in the originals, essentially making it a director's cut
>Much better graphics and and a better engine, allows for more/better content
>Both stay very close to the original products, not rewriting or "improving" upon the original like many other remakes do
>You can trade literally hundreds of pokemon that were not available at the time over, giving the game that much more replayabilty and giving endless combat possibilities
>Heartgold/Soul Silver ports the battle frontier from the sinnoh games, giving the games one of the most fleshed out post games to date by default
>Music remixes are godlike
Overall, these first 2 games had the most thought and soul put into them, the remakes only improve upon that and make pretty much the perfect pokemon games. Even if you don't play pokemon, you should play this duology, you can play GBA games on your phones now, so there is no excuse for at least firered/leaf green

The GBA remake of Super Mario Bros 3 is the best definitive version of SMB3. Hands down.
My arguments
>upgraded graphics. GBA 32-bit sprites > NES 8-bit sprites
>upgraded sound. GBA dual 8-bit sound > NES 8-bit sound
>tighter controls. NES processor lags a bit on input. GBA doesn't

Even if you don't like the 3D version, it has to be considered for including classic Rondo of Blood as an unlockable, and also a port of SotN.
>Odin Sphere Leifthrasir

It and Crystal fixed the most amazing one that allows arbitrary code execution. Also it has its own major one: tweaking. That and the slower battle system aside it is overall a really solid re-make.

Bionic Commando 2009 is an interesting game. Heavily hurt by its linearity, bad console optimization, pants-on-head-retarded plot that isn't even accidentally funny, and complete tonal shift. But the actual swinging and battling mechanics are pretty fun.
As for Rearmed 2, I know purists despise it for breaking a central tenet of the series (inability to jump) but as an extra movement tool it really ties in well to the general gameplay and swinging without overshadowing the core, and it is still possible to do everything without it. The weapons are all functional, the upgrades are fun, and if you are at least playing on hard it's decently challenging, or would be if the lives system wasn't so stupid. The other worst part about the game is the boss fights are mostly crap.

>hurt by linearity
Bionic Commando has a very deliberate level design made around the bionic arm. It's a remake of an NES game. Non-linear and sprawling levels actually hurt the bionic commando formula in 2. While it might be more fun for secret hunting, completing a level feels like you've missed half the stuff with half the satisfaction. There are a lot more ways to fuck up there.
>weapons
I enjoyed switching between weapons at will, the ammo limit feels, well, limiting. I probably wouldn't have a problem with it if it was in the original, but when you take something away from the player, you can't help but feel crippled.
>pants on head retarded plot
what's pants on head retarded about resurrecting Hitler for the 6 millionth time with some nice humor thrown in?

>Megaman Powered Up, Megaman X Maverick Hunter
Powered Up is a pretty damn good remake for Megaman 1, with tons of content, you can play as all the robot masters and Roll's pantsu.
Maverick Hunter X was really dissapointing, though. The remake looks worse than the original, because one thing is jumping from 8-bits to 3D and other doing it from 16-bits, not to mention the chibi style fits the the first better than whatever they tried to do in MHX, there's far less content compared to Powered Up, and you can only play as Vile as the alternative Character, not even Zero.

Keeping only 151 for 20 years would have been shit. Yet, adding more than 100 pokemons each generation is not practical. I think they should have added new pokemons but not that much, and they could have been adding newer pokemons as free DLC.

Even though I admit the online secret bases are really nice, they are mostly an expansion of content that was already there all to it's full potential. Latias Flying is cool, but you can just fly, and the only other thing is there for, like islands and those rings shit, is so horribly implemented, uninteresting and scarce that doesn't really justify it.

REmake 2 was great, zombies became a threat again after years of being so useless that in later games they would have machineguns, RPGs and shields and still be a joke. Mr X patrolling the RPD was an excellent idea, in the original, he would despawn the moment you touched the closest door.

Just because it's better than 6 doesn't make it a good remake. They removed a ton of enemy types, messed with the story heavily, removed a lot of puzzles, simplified the layout of the police station… The tyrant is basically the only good change they made, and he's only there for a tiny portion anyways.

This. Aside from what you mentioned, I also hated the way Capcom changed some characters, especially Marvin and Kendo. They changed Kendo from a gruff, womanizing japanese-american into a spineless cuck. Feels like they sort of merged his character with the guy who locks himself inside the container in the beginning of RE3.

I know, but that's the impression he gives other than shooting his daughter. I guess it would be better if there wasn't any mention of him having a family like in the original. Or maybe Capcom should have just added this Kendo as a new, original character with a different name, since he looks and acts nothing like in the original.

"Spineless cuck" are probably the wrong words to use. The daughter was a cheap attempt to inject depth and emotion into Kendo's situation.
Curious as to your problem with Marvin. A few lines were corny but otherwise I thought he was handled well.
Irons was even more ham-fisted than Kendo.

The only thing ORAS actually did wrong as a remake was remove the Frontier and not replace the Game Corner.
There are plenty of cool features added to balance it out though, like actually flying through the sky on your Pokémon, the fact they made the "you go into space and catch deoxys" myth real, the bottom screen tool that shows you every pokemon you can catch in the area and whether you've caught them all yet or not, or online secret bases, or the ability to rematch certain important trainers using stronger teams, like Wally or Steven.
People who say ORAS is a piece of shit are blinded by nostalgia. Even at its worst I don't think anyone can make a rational argument in good faith that the remakes are overall worse than the original games.

>like actually flying through the sky on your Pokémon, the fact they made the "you go into space and catch deoxys" myth real
They are cool, but they are nothing but gimmicks. SS/HG didn't need anything that fancy to be an actual great remake. Not to mention, the flying around was only with Mega Latios/Latias. Even though all models are fully rendered in 3D, they could't make it so that pokemons that can learn fly would show in model, when one of the greatest things that made HG/SS great was your main pokemon following around, and it was hilarious when a big pokemon followed you.
>the bottom screen tool that shows you every pokemon you can catch in the area and whether you've caught them all yet or not
This is more of an expansion from the features in games since Gen IV.
>online secret bases
This is an expansion from an existing feature in the originals. They didn't change that much, secret bases had a similar function back in the GBA anyway with the link cable.
>or the ability to rematch certain important trainers using stronger teams, like Wally or Steven.
Done before, but this one was done better, I think.
>Even at its worst I don't think anyone can make a rational argument in good faith that the remakes are overall worse than the original games
It is worse than Emerald. The original R/S weren't that good in the first place but Emerald fixed a lot of it with a better implemented story, more events, more pokemons and extra content all around.
The biggest problem with OR/AS is that it feels just like R/S with shitty sprinkles on top. HS/SS were much more than G/S. So yeah, it's not like the remake is worse than the original, is just that it's the original, with all the shitty things in and inconsequential changes.

I've been playing the PSP version of Tactics Ogre: Let us Cling Together, and now I'm near the end of the game. While the game has some serious balance issues, I feel that it is overall fairly trivial to do well. How does this compare to the SNES version, which I hear is significantly harder? Is the SNES version that much more of a headache to play than the PSP remaster? Also, has anyone tried this mod https://nichegamescom.wordpress.com/2018/10/02/one-vision-the-guide/

This really is just the purest kind of fun. Trashing things with Raiden even makes you appreciate how different the other characters are to play too.
As for me the first thing that comes to mind is Wild Arms Alter Code f, improved visuals and music along with extra side-quests and new party members. The only thing I didn't like was Zeds new monster form that made it more silly than actually monstrous which is the point of his closing story.
