Hey everyone, I'm digging deep into the PS1 library and I'm looking to get more Japanese only games. I mostly like 2D games but I'm open to 3D ones as well.

There's a few obvious ones like Robbit Mon Dieu, Little Ralph, Hokuto no Ken, Harmful Park, Panzer Bandit and Umihara Kawase Shun. I'm curious what are some Japanese only PS1 games you may have played that you really enjoyed. Actually while I'm at it, what are some great Ps1 games at all? Try to avoid the obvious ones please.

Unfortunately, OP, discussing your topic requires actual, developed taste in vidya so you won't see many replies here. As for myself, I've only experience with two titles that fit your description, OP, though I've played more "JP only" games with a fan patch for my EOP sensibilities.

Ore no Ryouri, a cooking game that I only learned about because it was packaged with a playstation underground demo disc. You use your sticks in the most creative way since Ape Escape to prepare Traditional Japanese™ dishes and their ingredients, first to satisfy your customers and then in certain levels to do better than your restaurant rivals(at satisfying your customers.)

Then there's Gundam Battle assault which I never played because the kike gamestore that stocked it wouldn't sell/rent it to me because It was JP only and the PS1 was region locked.

>Gegege no Kitaro

2D sidescroller based on a long running and really popular anime/manga. It's kind of a boss rush and the sprites are god-tier, still looks amazing to this day.

>Mad Stalker - Full Metal Force

Re-release of a game for X68000, also on FM Towns and PC Engine. Sidescrolling mecha beat-em-up with lots of explosions. It's a fun time. I've read elsewhere that the fan consensus is that the PS1 version is inferior to, say, the PC Engine, but to be honest I like this version better than that one. The proportions on the mechs look way better in the PS1 version to me.

>Wolf Fang

Sidescrolling mecha shooter, kind of like a faster paced Assault Suit game. It's fun, though i haven't gotten around to playing very much of it. Good luck finding an ISO or a physical copy, from what I understand it's quite rare. I've only been able to find a PSP E-boot version of it, though it plays just fine in ePSXe, You could also try to find a copy of the original arcade version, might have better luck with that but I haven't looked for it myself.

The Resident Evie translation was finally implemented in the game itself.

Game's still listed as "unfinished" even if the main script translation's been patched in.

>[…] The game should be pratically fully playable. Some menus and the map screen don’t have translated text. A translated map is included with the files. The game may still have some more bugs, so one should save often.

>If someone wants to fix the remaining issues, the readme has instructions on how to get started.

I guess they wouldn't release it if it had anything too game breaking present, but still might be a factor to consider. Also sounds like the team that did it aren't looking to stick around to get it 100% working (and issue that's harmed a number of fan translations, such as Sol Trigger). At least it's out for public use, but I might wait until a bugfix patch or something myself though, if they're guessing there's more problems that weren't rectified prior to release.

OK, seems that it is playable but has several bugs, still. And the readme mentions a bunch of additional stuff that still needs fixing.

The "save often" thing is kind of a problem since this game advances the time when saving. Emulator/adrenaline would save me from that at least…

I can mirror the patch if you're interested.

Considering they mention a thread on the forums, I went looking there. Gemini (project hacker) had a statement about it.

>"The game isn't fully playable, it actually likes to crash quite a lot to a black screen. I didn't upload the sources for anyone to just compile them and slap an incomplete work together, I uploaded them so that someone could actually complete the thing and give the game the treatment that it deserves. Sorry but I don't like when people release stuff with my name on it in a horribly incomplete state, so I flagged the entry asking for it to be removed unless released in a complete state; I would have released that mess myself a long time ago otherwise."

Does the group actually actively talk with people, or even just talk amongst each other, somewhere public? Could be a good way to gauge if there actually is progress still being made, or if someone involved simply released what they had without knowing how to properly fix it (similar case with Sol Trigger being released as a broken v0.9, and never fixed since).

There is a large chunk available as official eboots if you own a PSP/Vita, while some other japanese PS1 games can be emulated as converted eboots at the cost of eventual issues such as crashes/freezes or bugs, but they seem rather rare in my experience.

There should be no bugs in converted eboots. They are supposed to be lossless, something you can verify yourself by comparing hashes of the original dumps with dumps extracted from the generated eboots. If you are experiencing corrupted games, are you injecting multiple discs into a single eboot? The tool has an upper limit of 2GB after which indices get fucked up in the file, so not all games will fit on one eboot. Unfortunately nobody can or has bothered to fix the tool (it might be partially closed source, it does come with some source files but I don't think it's all there). Somebody recently posted on I think psx-scene how to fix affected eboots in a hex editor, not sure if it works. I've just been hoping somebody would write a new tool or something that handles it properly.

As for official eboots, I've heard those use compressed audio, and possibly other data has been altered depending on the game. I've not verified that, but it might be a better idea to download and convert them yourself for the highest quality. You just have to mind the 2GB limit.
