I got a Vita a few months ago and a 3DS sometime earlier, way after they've got pushed out. As a teenager I've mostly played old PC games until I moved on to other stuff (also we were poor and there wasn't money for a new PC or new games, also I didn't have anyone to play with IRL anymore). So I stuck to these old games or emulated old games online sometimes. But after getting these consoles now I kind of regret it. Well the Vita is still having games released on it and, say, 2015 games are still "recent" and talked about I guess. But still, I do regret not branching out earlier. Got a Switch now so I can get with the times…

How about you?

Planetside 1. I didn't hear about it until after it died. I tried Planetside 2, but the "free" to play model turns me off, and I heard it's almost nothing like the first Planetside anyway other than being an MMOFPS. I tried Planetside 1 shortly afterwards, but the only people still playing are the people who never left. So when I tried capturing an outpost in the middle of nowhere I was quickly set upon by an aircraft that took almost no damage from my starter weapons while taking a chunk out of my health for so much as a grazing hit. But those things probably wouldn't have mattered in a populated server.

Hey, don't worry you can still do that! After all video game CREATION does not really have a time limit (unlike games themselves where after some time people move on to the newer ones). I've made a website at 25 years old, now 27 and it's really popular. Exceeded by expectations.

If a game doesn't have an active thread right now, it never will. Aside for super-popular franchises like Doom or Castlevania, very few people will give a shit. The closest I've had success with is puzzle game threads, where some people recognize Kula World or Fire 'N Ice. But even then, you don't even get puzzle game threads anymore. It's all just Puyo Puyo, Tetris and Puyo Puyo Tetris.

In what sense? You can still find matches rather quickly, except for league, but that's expected for a console where you can't fucking message your friends. I've found that going through a full romset and noting down what has potential is the only way to experience a console's library. If you only play the popular games, you'll get anywhere from 0 to 3

worthwhile games. If you play something based on recommendations, you'll always have a shitty impression of the console. To this day, I consider the SNES to be a console that had nothing but Square RPGs and Square RPG wannabes, because no one talks about anything else on it and I haven't gotten around to playing much on it.

You can discuss some classic games. Not always but some. It's a difficult problem but a lot of people here haven't played many games outside of what is acceptable. Can't really get too weird with the games before it just kills the thread. Can't talk about something like London Seirei Tanteiden because nobody would have a clue what it is.

I got undertale just under a month after release because I usually wait to try games out despite how excited I am for them. Don't get me wrong, the threads were still genuinely fun up untill poopy joe showed up and started shitting up the board, spamming the thread with scat and porn. The only problem was that the entire game was data-mined, discussion was met with memes and "lol already talked about it read the archives" and Toby gave up on his Gaster ARG he was planning. That's not to say discussion didn't happen, it's just that it was so flooded that it was harder to discuss anything, especially the glaring flaws with the game.

I regret bypassing the PS1/PS2 era.

1996 was a pretty transformative year for me in terms of vidya. Got an N64 for by birthday, and a couple months later, the ISP in our city opened up its dial-up service, so I got to experience the joys of being a PCfag. Between playing Quake, Duke, and Ultima, consoles were largely neglected by me for about 20 years.

I read/see all of these great PS1/PS2-era games that I missed out on, and it seemed like a wonderful golden age for JRPGs. I kinda wish that I had experienced it, especially since the N64 was such a fucking flop. (Which only pushed me even further into PC.)

Hindsight is funny that way, but also kinda depressing.

Yes. When I was a kid in the 90s, I used to play Sega consoles with my relatives and friends but I never asked my parents for a Genesis/Mega Drive. My childhood was mostly Nintendo and Sony stuff.

I regret not doing this or buying it when the games were dirt cheap because i'm now a huge Genesis fan. Contra Hard Corps, Alien Soldier, Ristar and many other titles made my jaw hit the floor when I played them with a emulator for the first time.

As for series, I can say:

- Sega franchises (Streets of Rage, Shinobi, Wonderboy, etc.)

- Final Fantasy Tatics

- Xenoblade

- SSX

- Power Stone

If I had bought it 5-6 years ago, I easily could've gotten an unused one for 30 euros or maybe even less. Hell, Dragon Quest VIII for the 3DS is just two and half years old, and is no longer being sold in stores here.

I don't regret it as such. I usually buy the consoles just after they've become irrelevant and went out of production. That way they're cheap, hacks and piracy is common and their libraries (and homebrew) are mature. Sure, it would have been cool to talk about the games when they were still being actively discussed by other anons but I can live without it. Got my 3DS and Vita recently like you, OP and have been enjoying lots of games that I've missed out on. More on the Vita than 3DS, too.

Also I don't know where else to ask but is there a way to take screenshots on a 3DS while in DS mode (through TW++)?

kind of wished I extended my console days so I could have really explored the MGS series but that never happened. sure its true its "truly woke" as people say but I was too busy playing Doom and Diablo and was really into the "hessian" lifestyle (i.e., being a metal/punk dude, which I still am)

It's less getting late into some series and more into certain, mostly multiplayer games.

I never got to enjoy Tribes Ascend for long because I had a toaster at the time, for example. Same with Gigantic, and I get the feeling how anal I am about spending money on a game without sales will eventually mean something like Risk of Rain 2 or EDF5 will die out before I get the chance to play them.

NDS mode is totally separate and basically unaffected by CFW, so no. The only approach is if you do the video capture hardmod, or you could dump the save and ROM to PC and run it in an emulator.

>>16736265

Well you may have dodged a bullet in that. Games that are heavily multiplayer-focused but don't allow private servers are fated for death eventually, and always-online ones like MMOs are even worse.

The only reason /vg/ and /vr/ exist on 4chan is traffic management, because /v/ was having recurring general threads absolutely dominating the board, and /vr/ was another attempt at load balancing since there is a reasonable split between retrofags and people who want to talk about more modern stuff. There is no reason to do that on 8chan when the board is already slow, and there aren't any overly dominating thread types. Our recurring generals are only about 12% of /v/.

Shame I missed it, but even in its real heyday 8chan was never fast enough that I felt the primary topic boards needed to be divided, whereas when back on 4chan I stuck to /vr/ since I generally prefer older games and couldn't stand the noise on any of their main boards even then.

>Vita

Lately I've been playing dating sims that require moon runes, RecoLove and Dream C Club. Really good stuff to practice your Japanese on. As for recs, I loved Shiren the Wanderer, Disgaea 3+4, Utawarerumono and the Bullet Girls games. There's also Eiuyuu Senki that has the 18+ scenes added back in via a fanpatch and lots of multiplats like Risk of Rain and Rayman Legends that work really well on the system. PS1 and PSP are also worth mentioning, lots of cool games there too. Blood Omen looks really cool on the OLED Vita screen though the zoomed out view can be a bit grainy. Half Minute Hero on PSP is easy to play for just 5 minutes and put down again and the simple pixel graphics make it look as if it was running on native resolution somehow. It's just a really clean look, I guess. I have a fuckon of games for Adrenaline preloaded but I'm still busy playing the other stuff for now.

>3DS

Rune Factory 4 absolutely consumed my life for a while, awesome game. Been also playing Etrian Odyssey 4 and having a blast with that. I played Dungeon Travelers 2 on Vita but I'm enjoying EO a lot more for some reason. I download a bunch of other games but haven't really tried them yet. I'm not all that into first party Nintendo stuff or pokemon like most people with DSes seem to be so I have no opinion on those.

Also been playing Infinite Space for the DS, some anon made a thread about it a while ago and I decided to pick it up. It's pretty damn fun and I have not played anything like it before. It's like a space opera simulator with some anime tropes thrown in. You build up a small fleet of ships and fight other fleets of ships, you collect ship blueprints and ship module blueprints and assemble everything yourself. Then you assign NPCs that join you on your travel to crew positions, which boost your fleet stats and give you special abilities. All while cruising from planet to planet, system to system and doing quests, fighting pirates or being a pirate yourself sometimes. I've never seen this game mentioned anywhere or people talking about it before for some reason.

>>16736270

Yeah, that's the answer I found with google, was hoping I was just overlooking something. It seems so weird not having screenshot functionality or at least a homebrew for it. But then again, NDS was a completely different time and that stuff just wasn't a thing back then on consoles.

The 3DS doesn't support screenshots out of the box either, you only have that with 8.x+ Luma3DS (and they're slow) or the expensive capture mod. It wasn't until Switch where you get a dedicated button for screenshot/video capture (again, blocked in some cases). Vita has screenshots out of the box but by default it's marred by shitty JPEG quality and sometimes watermarks, and I think some games disable it. Thankfully there's not only a better PNG screenshot plug-in, but one for USB video capture that actually works really bloody well.

Yeah, I take screenshots with luma on 3DS, it's slow but better than nothing. Also tried streaming Video from the 3DS the other day using NTR but it's half functional at best and completely broken at worst. On Vita everything is just perfect with the homebrews.

>Eiuyuu Senki

I was digging around Reddit threads for the patch and supposedly one of them is complete and without the bug that slows the game down to a crawl when you get to the end game. I have not played it long enough to confirm whether I actually got the proper patch yet, as it was rather confusing which patch was the one that actually fixes all the issues. My friend was playing on the old patch and he got to a point where the game is basically unplayable due to the massive slowdowns it gets. Won't be able to tell until I play the game some more but I've got too much of a backlog to really dedicate myself to it right now. I just mentioned the game as a sort of novelty item that you can get via homebrew.

>Do you have regrets over not getting into some series / systems earlier?

Absolutely, mainly Nintendo and its series, as i grew up first with a SEGA Mega Drive (played some Master System, Commodore64 and even Intellivision as well) and then went with PlayStation (PS1, PS2, PSP, PS3, Vita and sadly even PS4 that i got as a Christmas present) and PC, and i feel like i missed a lot.

the only Nintendo console i ever owned was the OG Gameboy, which i loved.

and if that counst, a bootleg NES called the "Dido" that i got as a Christmas present when i was a kid and was fully compatible with NES cartridges but only got "Tom & Jerry" for it

So i missed many of those games that are now considered classic masterpieces nowadays.

For instance, i only recently played and finished Super Metroid and i absolutely loved it.

The gameplay, graphics, atmosphere and that fantastic OST, instantly made that game one of my all-time favourites.

But now, despite being able to appreciated it regardless, i wish i was able to play it during those times, i am sure the kid i was back then would have been blown away by that game.

Now i have Switch and i am loving it so far, it's giving me back the joy of playing video games that i lost in the last 5-6 years with Soyny, and sure as hell i am not going back, those pieces of shit can shove their PS5 and whatever Naughty Poz is going to make for it up their asses.
