A GOG thread got me thinking, are GOG releases of old games safer to store than ISOs of originals? I've read that many GOG win 95/98 games don't work on the original windows versions and God knows if anyone is going to bother to try to make them work on windows xp/7 VNs in the future. If you absolutely want a game to survive maybe having the ISO and patches/nocd fixes is preferable. What do you think?

You're probably right, for one example, GOG's version of Dungeon Keeper absolutely refused to run on my goto pc for older gaming, a windows xp machine from 2001. Generally GOG releases do work on it though, for example the GOG version of Morrowind GOTY works perfectly.

They literally grab patches and compatability fixes that have existed for years and bundle them with their shitty installer, no different than using an ISO and installing the patches yourself

Just archive both, so you can choose which one to use based on your needs.

not always. Freedom Force, for instance, has a mouse bug on Vista and above that has a million fixes, none of which work. The GOG version actually does work, though it seems to do so by using a modified exe from the sequel

Wrong, they do it for every game. they dont make patches/fixes or improve compatability

No it doesnt, many games are unfixed and dont work at all, comapred to if you just downloaded their original versions

What did you mean by this?

GOG releases are patched for newer hardware.
Going forward they might be better for archival, however, older archival copies will be better for running older operating systems.

That's a non sequitur. Even if you're worried about someone spending money, you can archive pirated copies of GOG installers.

Patches for old games can disappear when the hosting site dies and there isn't an active enough community. GOG stuff sometimes works on new hardward when the original, with patches or not, doesn't. Why are you assuming that finding old games and their patches will always be possible?

Or are you just being contrarian because muh board culture? I'd like to believe you're not an idiot, anon. And "it takes 5 minutes" is also a blatant lie, depending on the game in question.

I had didn't have any problems running dungeon keeper, but I had problems running dungeon keeper 2. It was apparently a problem with dungeon keeper 2 built in graphics accelerator that would cause the game to have missing textures, and be very slow. It takes some fidgeting with the menus, but all you have to do is turn it off.

They sometimes also bundle not just fan patches but actual mods into their games. For instance: VtMB.

Yes most GOG games are like that . But sometimes they do add custom fixes developed in-house by GOG to the games they sell, see >>16728848. If you refuse to accept that, you're a stubborn nigger.
Sometimes these custom fixes will be modified .exes but more often they come in the form of .sdb patches, which is a form of real-time patching natively supported by Windows without having to modify the original files.
