>What's this?

A private server, known as DB/v/, for our WIP BYOND game, Dragon Ball Climax. Previously we played Dragon Universe until we found source code from a far earlier version of the game and made it our own. Climax is an open world sandbox multiplayer game that takes place within the Dragon Ball universe.

>What do I do?

Virtually whatever you want. Train hard to increase your power level, build a humble farm to harvest crops, become a Martial Arts master and teach your own students, enslave the universe, build robots and become a cyborg, travel across the universe, play as a Saibaman, etc.

>Is this a roleplay server?

Yes and no. While RP is encouraged, it is not required for playing the game unless you wish to become a rank. If you won't be roleplaying, please put an OOC tag by your character's name.

Recent Updates

-The Afterlife maps are currently being overhauled! Heaven and the Check-In Station are complete, and all that's left is Hell and the Demon Realm. Remaining planetary maps will also be revamped in the future along with unique cave systems.

-Ki has been massively redone! There are now multiple varieties of types of ki moves that you can achieve based on how much you've leveled up certain ki traits. Physical attacks are also planned to be redone similarly.

-Training Session has been added. This option will log your character's gains over a certain period of time.

I mentioned this earlier while I was there, but the way you balance gates is:

1) Gates move the the aura slot and reduce ki to 100% if above, making them mutually exclusive with power up

2) Gates damage you as a cost for how strong they are

3) You cannot learn higher gates until you completely master the lower levels. Probably need to reduce the time for each level to compensate

This should address the big issues with them

I’m not stepping down from a position just for expecting an admin command to work properly. Someone brought up the multitude of infinitely spawning spacepods on Vegeta. Any person in my position would use the Delete All of Type command.

As for fixing this, there’s very little I can do on my end. I can hardly load my character let alone use commands now. We need Nev to manually reboot the server since he’s hosting it.

Alright, so the problem’s definitely from deleting over 60 objects of the same type at once as if that wasn’t obvious already. Once the server’s rebooted, we’ll have to delete each pod/boat at their storage location on Vegeta/Arconia one at a time. We’ll also need to edit the code with those specific objects so they don’t spawn more copies on a reboot as well as see if we can reduce the lag from the objects being deleted at once.

To clarify, the boats at the Arconia Harbor and the pods at the Vegeta Spaceport are all variants of the original code for Boats and Spacepods. They were supposed to be versions that I could place on the map and they wouldn’t spawn more than once. They are labeled “Boat_Placed” and “Spacepod_Placed.” However, it appears that the code didn’t work and they spawn more copies on reboot anyway.

Yeah, deleting objects is one of the worst things we can do when it comes to cpu usage, it absolutely kills the serb. I find it strange that those objects keep getting multiplied, I wonder if it's something to do with how they have a variable change when used, which makes the game think the original is missing. We probably just need to do something else to make those limited boats and the like that doesn't involve actively changing the spawner itself. Maybe we can create a master list of the spawned items, and have the clickable check against that to see if it should spawn. It's far more tedious, but it would avoid ever changing any variables on the map object that way.

I say we remove both altogether, but lower the tech required for pods to around 40 or 45 since that is around the time spaceflight should be possible if you power up enough. In return for the lower BP times, teleporting fags could see more use taxiing others around to other planets and back, maybe let Rift Teleport bring one passenger along with you via grabbing.

The boats on Arconia exist purely because of Arconia’s design. Arconia is designed as a planet with many islands surrounded by a massive body of water. I planned to expand the map further to turn Arconia into a seafaring centric planet similar to the map in Wind Waker. Because it takes a bit to be able to create boats and swimming everywhere takes a long tome to grind, the boats and harbor were added to the planet to ease traversing in early portions of wipes.

There's so many things in the code that are unnecessary, that I don't know how to adequately suggest how to fix it without coming off on a rant. I was only trying to fix the issues with the game locking up during saving because someone mentioned that this was still an issue. Unfortunately even multi-threading it is not much of a solution, because the thing that's causing all the latency issues is actually disk write due to the fuck huge amount of data. While an SSD would seem like the ideal candidate for this game, it's actually worse because of the thrashing and the P/E.

Every character has every single one of their race's variables written to their character. This means you can directly look up the variables for a character on the character, but it also means that the game's memory footprint is super bloated. Even 12 mobs is a pretty huge burst of IO.

Fixing this kind of thing means basically more than just a fork, it means rewriting the fundamentals of how the game is run. I don't know why it is that Tens felt the need to save every single variable for a race to the character, but even in another language this would be seen as both needless and excessive. At some point someone should have pointed out the virtue of having an array of races that you could easily look up the value of something with a quick index call. I had no idea just how cumbersome this whole thing was until I loaded up a character in the editor, and I saw just how much fucking data there is to sift through.

Take out the progression, and you might as well just RP on some forums or something. The only way people are going to do anything other than grind is if they decide they WANT to do something else. Clown's comment there shows the problem best: "why start shit if it doesn't actually make you stronger?" The answer is because it should be more fun than watching your cookie clicker counter go up forever, and if it's not, then why do you care? Grind away.

From what I've witnessed over the last year and a half, solid RP is not something the playerbase seems to be interested in at all. They want to be able to PvP and meme around at will, with the most involved RP being mere shitposts comparatively.

Time and time again it's been proven that trying to cater to both opposing types of players just results in everyone feeling stepped over, and with a playerbase that loves to metagrudge over the dumbest shit it ends up generating drama now and again that makes DB/v/ look more like any other generic BYOND server, even if it's now based on a unique fork of Finale.

You have two options really: Focus entirely on PvP and the low-effort memes that come with it, or enforce RP properly with mechanical and administrative changes. I have a feeling the former is the much less painful option for all involved, especially with RP being considered too autistic for a fair chunk of the current playerbase.

One more thing while I'm at it: Obfuscating skill names and descriptions, and putting in trap skills that are a waste of skill points as an attempt to 'fuck over powergamers' fucks over everyone BUT said powergamers. Just gonna put that out there.

Short summary:

- Combat update somewhat finished. Will be considered done after Body has sufficient attacks and it's just bugfixing to do.

- Dungeons

- More shit that breaks saves I mean some work done on Gates, new Gate exclusive attacks, and the Hamon tree has been fleshed out some more.

In the future:

- Various trees relating to Body will be reworked. Consider Ki in it's final stage for 1.0

- Anger rework soon.

- Racials right afterwards, Legendaries will be diversified into two 'types'. (Super-Type, large anger but you lose a form.) (Z-type, way it is now, but with less anger.) Icers given the proper form treatment they deserve, Herans actually given masteries and shit (and possibly a third/fourth form. May end up losing their ascension for higher transformation mults.) etc, etc with other races. Bodyswap and Shapeshifter will be reworked.

Well, theres two ways of going about it kinda

1. download BYOND, it comes with its editor.

2. Find a dmi file or, explore the main BYOND interface for Dream Maker.

3. Make a new DMI file, or edit the DMI file to what you want.

3a. Some people will use tweakPNG in conjunction with gimp to keep the DMI data (DMIs are just PNGs with metadata). Useful for aura fuckery.

3b. If you snoop around ss13, they may have custom icon editors, I don'tknow.

3c. When making mob icons (for you or whatever), it's recommended to use a base. DMIs have Icon States, which are like definitions to their spritesheets. If the string isn't right, then your icon will have no animations that can be used by the game.

3d. If you're making clothes, same deal. Internally, overlays will always try to match icon states with their owner.

4. You can go to the Iconshare for some DMIs to download. (it's in the BYOND pager.)

When you lose a limb, there's a chance that your equipment stats will be permanently lowered (into negatives) by the values of what you had equipped to that limb. I'm not even going to try playing until that's fixed, and even then all gimped characters are presumably permanently gimped because the admin edit command is buggy garbage that wrecks the game when it's used.

I tried to get Stretchy Arms working. A bunch of debugging later, I identified two problems:

In /Code/Grabbing.dm the combined if statements that are checked before calling stretch_arms(target) are causing some sort of glitch and need to be split up into several separate if statements to function.

And in /Code/Modules/Skills/Skill Trees/Race Trees/namekian.dm, stretch_arms() creates the namek_arm object but never sets its location so it ends up stuck in limbo.

After I fixed both of those problems, I was able to ranged grab a mob successfully. However, the arm graphics never appeared, and remotely grabbing a mob caused tons of lag. I have no idea how to fix those problems (which are arguably worse than the skill simply not working), so all I can think to do is report my findings here and call it a day.

Most likely, object creation and deletion, along with any constant updating will fill the scheduler and cause lag.

Clones definitely do it. Mobs take forever to save.

Also, Sifters are a contributor to it. I made the upgrade costs fucking low. Please, for the love of god, spend mana to upgrade them instead of shoving a hundred to a room or else I'll make them delete themselves after a global limit is reached. Per fucking client, per world. Auto deletion. The works.
