After a cursory search, this exact same OP is on cuckchan /vp/. Anyway I played this a while ago but the level cap was the last straw for me. The game was already a giant grind, I'd rather just straight up replay Gen 5 than play their version of Unova. Don't believe anybody who says this is fun, unless you've got friends it is garbage.

To be fair, that's more Hoenn's fault than anything. They use the actual roms, and unfortunately Hoenn's overworld looks like garbage. It looks less bad in Kanto (although given it is on the GBA too it's still not great) and I'm sure it's fine in Unova but I stopped before they added it so whatever.

Their implementation is as random encounters but catching them makes you a target for the whole server. You will not be able to store them, you lose them to the other player if you lose a challenge battle, you cant refuse a challenge, and they leave if you log out

I wouldn't be as upset about the last point if it didn't just make the game more tedious. All gym leaders use 5/6 Pokemon on top of being EV trained and having better movesets despite not being able to properly do those yourself until post-E4. You're also still only training 3-5 Pokemon because of designated HM usage making training 6 Pokemon at a time infeasible. (Unless you're a good goy and pay for an HM item to not have to keep a slave around.) I tried starting a new region using 3 primary Pokemon because that works better in the games and got fucked over just past the mid-region when the cap was barely past NPC level Pokemon. I ultimately just tried again several times hoping for better luck with leads to set up on. There's plenty of other things with this game it does wrong or made worse over time, but you get the idea.

I'm not sure why I came back to this. I said years ago this game made me realize why Pokemon would make for a terrible MMO if GameFreak/Nintendo ever decided to make an official one based on the main series games.

When I was a kid watching the show I thought it would be fun to travel with friends catching Pokemon like in the show. However, from a gameplay perspective it makes no sense to implement because each player needs their own progress. At that point the players are just watching each other play through the region, which they could already do by just playing the singleplayer games next to each other and glance over occasionally. (I actually did that with a friend for a bit years back. We'd sometimes play on our own, but wait for the other to catch up if one was getting too far ahead. We traded region exclusives or stuff we didn't have at certain parts of the game to keep our dex updated.)

Does the AI really cheat? It is legit 10 times harder than I remember the actual game being. It took me about a dozen tries to beat Misty.

The gym leader's pokemon ALWAYS attacked first, and the attacks were OP as fuck and had a big chance of confusing.

My party was Nidorina (which had no effective attacks against water), Bellsprout (that got 1 shotted), Geodude(always reduced to 1hp on first hit), Charmeleon (dies in 1-2 hits), Pikachu (dies in 2 hits), and Pidgey with no flying type moves.

I had to level up all my pokemon past 24 and try several times before I got lucky and defeated her. I had to complete all the other content that was accessible before cut before I could stand a chance.

I finished playing the three stories alongside two other friends. We split up the starters, fought gym leaders at the same time, and only used pokemon we captured (in that region only) or traded between each other. I had never played anything past Gold/Silver, so it was fun. When we played Emerald, I just captured everything and leveled it to see what it was like. When we reached Unova, when we found things we liked, we stopped and caught a few, looking for an above average IV. When we got to Kanto, I stayed on after everyone went to sleep and captured a stock of pokemon and bred them to 150-160 IVs. My descent into autism was measurable. We had a good time.

I don't think that's accurate. Any time I fight a trainer with pursuit, unless they have a really hard hitting attack, they spam pursuit. This happens whether I change out or not. I also change out frequently without being hit with pursuit.

Gym leaders have upgraded rosters. It's more noticable on higher level gym leaders, since their rosters are more altered than someone like Misty. They don't have enhanced status effect chances - you getting confused more than average is just a spree of shit luck.

I shat all over Misty with a Beedrill and a Pidgeotto because the first pokemon I ran into in Kanto was a shiny Pidgey which was funny because the first thing I found in Unova was a shiny Lillipup.

Played it for a while. There's no reason to play this game. If you want to play the 'story' and raise pokemon just play singleplayer. If you want the 'competetive' shit pokeshowdown exists.
