Let's have a thread about meta-fictional vidya games. I really like the theme and so I'm annoyed that it is taken up by so many hacks.
What are some games that include the theme, good or bad? What are the best uses of breaking the fourth wall in video games, either for drama, comedy, horror or anything else? And what are you favorite examples?
To start off I'm going to talk about a few games that I know.
>ICEY
A pretty messy action game with a Stanley Parable-esque story and King in Yellow references. It's decent at best but some of the endings are quite fun to get, even if the true ending is a bit shit.
>Stanley Parable
A walking simulator mocking the ideas of railroading in video games, as well as contemplating whether you can really have true choice in a video game and what does it really mean to have free will. Worth playing through if you pirate it.
>OFF
One of the YOU WERE THE REAL MONSTER ALL ALONG video games, but done far better than usual mostly because the entire conflict is very gray and when you start thinking about it maybe you aren't such a big of a monster after all
>Undertale
You all know this fucking game and either love it or hate it. One of those games which shits on you for doing bad things in the game but this time actually gives you a choice, which is an improvement in comparison to something like Spec Ops
>Umineko no Naku Koro Ni
Not a video game but a visual novel still deserves a mention. A mystery story where the main characters are fighting over whether the story drives into the realm of fantasy or mystery literally battling with logical arguments. The biggest problem is that spoilers the main female lead is actually a meta-fitional trap

No More Heroes deserves a mention. The first game is all about some guy basically wasting all his time, money and energy on a hobby that doesn't really mean anything except to those that are interested in it. It had no problem calling you, the player, a loser, but still manages to make you root for the main character.
I'm curious as to what the Japanese perception of Travis is. The cultural divide between the East and West is something that Suda likes to play with and I find it hard to believe that he made Travis such a likable character for us gaijins on accident.

Why do we like meta games? Is it because we enjoy something trying to break the rules? Is it a good story telling tool? Is it just funny? I almost hate it because it almost seems like the game maker is trying to be different on purpose but I always like seeing where they go with it.

Black Souls is one of the most fun to explore hentai games I've ever played, even though the art is pretty shitty.
It's about an undead dude, like Dark Souls, but in a world inhabited by many characters from diverse fairytales. The goal is to defeat Evil Queen CinderElla to stop the spread of a magic mist that corrupts people and turns them into demons.
What's really fun is that it gives you lots of freedom, you can ignore, help, murder, rape and enslave strangers on your quest, and you can explore different paths in different orders and the content changes a lot depending on what you do.
If you play it normally, the ending is pretty normal, but if you strive to get the secret true ending the narrative changes drastically.

Stanley Parable was funny, I don't know how the developer went from that to Beginner's Guide, one of the most pretentious fucking things I've ever played and the exact kind of thing the previous walking sim was mocking.
Undertale's been discussed to death, who cares, talk about Deltarune instead.

As cool as meta-writing can be it also has a nasty habit of resulting in games which people end up thinking are smarter than they actually are because "oh my god the game acknowledges it's a game that's so clever how did it do that?". It is pretty much inevitable that we're going to get some overrated shit get brought up when discussing this topic for that very reason.
