Something occurred to me. Devola and Popola are mysteriously overpowered in Nier: Gestalt & Replicant. Taking lore from Nier: Automata, I understand that the original D&P units from the first Nier were created to be the main overseers of Project Gestalt, so it would make some sense for them to be really powerful, but this is never explicitly spelled out and the source of their power is never actually explained. Upon further consideration, there are a bunch of inconsistencies between the two games that I'm sure must have lore reasons, but I'm not sure what they are.
In Nier 1:
>D&P use staves.
>D&P use red and black magic with extremely high proficiency.
>D&P can fly with magic, a skill not seen in other androids.
>D&P can use the same attacks as both Niers.
>D&P can phase and teleport through magic circles.
>When Popola goes berserk, she shifts to using gold (white?) magic, as well as pure black magic.
>When berserk, Popola uses a black annihilation field that we've only seen two similar examples of in the series. Once from Emil, a white field, and we've seen that YORHA units can cause a white field by bringing two black boxes together to detonate them.
In Nier 2:
>D&P use standard issue YORHA swords and melee attacks.
>YORHA units appear noticeably stronger than D&P, wielding white magic via pods.
>D&P have some abilities that YORHA units don't, but these aren't magic in nature.
There's one big question that inseparably ties into this… What happened to magic between Nier: Gestalt & Replicant and Nier: Automata? Why are D&P using red and black magic during the Gestalt era, but most androids can't even use magic by the time Automata rolls around? Why are YORHA using white magic via pods, but only machine lifeforms are seen using the same kind of magic that D&P and gestalts were using previously? Where did machine lifeforms get this ability? What powers the white magic of pods, that previously Kaine could use innately? How does the Country of Night tie into this? Will we find out on the next episode of Dragonball Z?

I'm not sure if I'm getting this entirely correctly, but Automata Devola and Popola are basically bootleg models, that were either made or completely memorywiped and reprogrammed after Gestalticant D&P died. There's a big point that they're programmed to feel guilt, because everyone hates them over something that happened to a completely different set of D&P androids.

I would guess magic knowledge was lost with the extinction of replicants, and D&V didn't retain the knowledge when they were rebuilt/ reprogrammed. A lot of info was kept from androids, and the pods acknowledge that old world magic is vastly superior to their technology.

Plus Kaine would have been a spooky skeleton by the time project Yorha was even a glint in an android's photoreceptors, barring some sort of weird stasis situation. I can't remember if ending E of NGR restored Kaine's humanity or not. I do remember Taro mentioning in an interview something about letting Kaine die if you really cared about her as a character, so maybe that's what he was alluding to?

They got their magic from Grimoir Noire, they were always working with it from the inception of Project Replicant as it was the thing that made the Shades to begin with and was based on the Maso research that taught them the magic of the watchers from Drakengard. The later units were after the gestalt system shut down, taking Noire and -if they were still around- Weiss and Rubrum with it. They were just older model androids while the Yorha ones were based on machine technology and could adapt and improve while Devola and Popala without magic remained baseline Project Replicant era models.

What are pod programs?

They use angelic script. Also it's revealed somewhere in the game that the Grimoires of Project Gestalt were basically antique pods, sort of. Grimoires actually contained an associated gestalt, which makes no sense to me considering that clones of Grimoire Noir were distributed as part of early Project Gestalt in order to facilitate finding an Original Gestalt to produce stable maso. Outside of the obvious role differences and the lack of a gestalt occupant for pods, the functions they perform are pretty much identical. Hovery, floaty assistants that let you use magic. You can even swap out your pod skin for Grimoire Weiss in game.

No they didn't. They were part of Project Gestalt, the organization researching magic in the first place. Project Gestalt was responsible for all magic seen in Nier, notably the Grimoires, Emil and Halua, and obviously the shades. Kainé only acquired magic after merging with the shade Tyrann.
Magic was a result of unique particles called "maso" coming into the world from the body of the red dragon. All magic in the Nier line is based on the dragon's maso. The maso particles from the giant (aka queen beast) are what caused god to have power in this realm, which caused the legion and WCS, until the androids and replicants successfully expunged all the "beast's maso" back into the alternate dimension.

The Shadowlord aka the real Gestalt Nier was being used as a stable source of maso in return for Project Gestalt freezing gestaltified Yonah to prevent her from relapsing, with the promise of getting her a replicant body. Sorry, I misspoke. To be more specific, they were based off of people that were alive at one point in time. Kaine and everyone else in the Gestalt/Replicant project had their DNA encoded (that's what blackscrawl is by the way, the letters are the person's DNA and it's breaking down). Anyway, it's mentioned in the stage play that A2 specifically is getting flashbacks to memories she doesn't have: of a young girl living happily with her grandmother. Going further, it's hinted at even harder by the fact the very first bossfight A2 is in has a remix of Grandma playing (Grandma being Kaine's them in OG NieR)

A lot of what I had in mind to say has already been said, but in regard to this point in particular I'd like to imagine that, rather than magic being used directly by YoRHa androids, it's instead been integrated into the engineering that goes into the YoRHa androids and their equipment. Consider in regard to that point that the YoRHa androids themselves are created to fight battles, not to win battles.

Well then let's ask some questions YoRHa: Dark Apocalypse raises.
1) How did they get to a different dimension?
2) Who is 2P?
3) Why did the machines reconstruct the factory in this dimension?
4) Why were there a shitload of 2B bodies on the ground in that one room
5) Why do 2P and 9S want to kill one another? Their eyes weren't red, so it wasn't a logic virus. She can't be 'factory default' 2E, because 9S refers to her as 2P
6) Where is A2?
7) What was 2P looking for?
I've got a working theory that explains some of it. 2B's personality was corrupted by the logic virus and 9S has been trying to purge it. Every time he thinks he's succeeded, they install the 2B personality into a body. When it winds up having failed, he kills the failed 2B. 2P was an attempt to that separated out 2B's memories and the P will wind up having the meaning of "Two Parts" and the key she's looking for is what will make her into the 2B we all know and fap to. 9S just sees her as another failed 2B to be killed 2P intends to kill 9S half out of self preservation and half out of her programming as an E android.
A2 will show up in another part of the raid, probably as the end boss of "The Copied Castle" (Which will also include the amusement park) and Adam and Eve will show up as the end bosses of The Copied City. Machines are remaking what they know because that's just what machines do, remake human shit 1:1.
Now as to how they got to a different dimension to do this shit, I have no fucking clue. Not referring to FFXIV as a different dimension, for those that don't know, YoRHa: Dark Apocalypse is taking place on a pocket dimension within the FFXIV world known as "The First"

Most of the things she's in are just non-canon cameos, but if I remember correctly, Yoko Taro said that YoRHa: Dark Apocalypse is. Right. 24man raids are released on the odd numbered patches of the expansion. Each patch cycle is is about 3-4 months long. We just had 5.1 land, with The Copied Factory released in it, about a month or so ago. Next step of the raid will be in about half a year or so. People are speculating it'll cover the forest and the amusement park, with Simone and A2 being bosses from it, and that the final one will be the copied city with Adam and Eve being bosses in it.
