My favorite story:
>early game, just finished building the bare essentials
>get a distress call from a colonist's father
>he's being chased by pirates
>tell him to fuck off because I have no defenses and can't afford to feed a fourth colonist
>over the course of the next year or so he comes back four times
>by this point he's been chased by every hostile faction at least once
>eventually accept him out of curiosity
<traits: chemical fascination, abrasive
<incapable of: cooking, plant work, dumb labor
<flake addiction
If Prepare Carefully is to be believed, the game actually considered him to be worth less than the clothes on his back.

I never bothered using Grenades and Shields because I didn't like meelee (unless playing a medieval mod) or micro-managing grenade throwers.
But then I got 3 shit eaters like that. One even started with 1 in all skills but 7 in artistic, but I was a couple months away from starting art production.
So I found the best use for them. Make a little bunker with sandbox around a single tile, put a roof on it (it will make him be in darkness lowering enemies aim) and make sure this thing is 5-7 tiles away from your frontline.
Next, load those guys with a shield and molotovs/grenades. Fight starts? Pack'em in their tiny hole.
1/3 of the time, they're dead meat, but the shield often softs blows so they go down but don't die, and you can keep using these sort of "smart mine".
I find it works better when paired with snipes behind them, since they will aggro enemies quite well.

There's a Dual Wield mod that works for that. Can have a melee weapon in the off hand and it increases your 0 range damage.
Wouldn't recommend using a gun and grenades though because it fires both weapons, meaning you throw a grenade automatically after each burst, and can fuck shit up.

Z levels would give the game much more dynamic. Creepy crawlies coming from under the base only to a den of spiders, material disasters such as sink holes. Kill boxes where you can poor hot iron from above or drop rocks.
Rimworld suffers from having pretty shitty combat RNG. Guns have piss poor range. When you make a base you eat up much more of your map, giving you less time to move colonists into position when there is a raid. Z levels would allow layers of protection such as distance from the edge of your map along with fortifiying key points where they have to access to move up in floors or down.
A fire on the 3rd floor could collapse on top of the other floors. Builds could collapse, sappers other methods of screwing your over by attacking supporting column's. Z levels add much more variety. Z levels are everything. Drones, air ships, etc. Over hanging cliffs. etc

Hey, I won't argue agains that.
I partially agree with the change because it puts swords and knifes back on the menu, but 1 Weapon limit does fuck it up. Heck, even Bioshock infinite has a 2 Weapon Limit. Badum Tsss
Bunch of people have petitioned Tynan for one of the many dual wielding mods to be incorporated in the game, but I guess he wants pawns to specialize in either Mellee or ranged.
As long as there's a lightweight mod out there fixing it, I'm rather okay with it. As a bonus, it also makes raiders more competent since they can also have sidearms for different ranges.
Heck, one of those mods lets you have a lot more weapons too, and the pawn uses them in respect to range. So he uses a sniper when the enemy is far, switches to an AK when he's closer, pulls out the shotgun when he's 2-3 tiles away and finally goes for the knife if he's melee.
He ends up carrying a shitload of crap and walks slowly as molasses, but that's a good way to make an all-range capable soldier.

WRONG.
There's a reason to keep smaller animals.
When they bond with a colonist, that colonist gets a permanent mood buff (+5 or so).
And ocasionally, they'll also nuzzle someone, often the bonded master because they spend time near him (+3) but they can also apply the same buff to any colonist at random.
One dog is a reliable +5 to someone and +3 at random to someone every now and then.
If you have 7 cats living in your colony, that's 7 colonists with +5 and several "nuzzlings" happening daily.
And the best part: since they're small animals, they don't eat as much as larger one's.
In short, they're pets. Treat them like pets, not battle-trained attack beasts.

In a sense. The game increases in difficulty over time and with your base wealth.
But it's not meant to do so infinitely and will usually "roll back" some of the difficulty.
The game keeps a sort of "Raid Score" that increases over time.
When one of your pawn goes down (not dies, simply going down), that "Raid Score" goes down a fair bit. If a lot of pawns get downed in quick succession, you'll usually notice your next raid to be half the size it was before.
This means someone collapsing from the plague, man-hunter revenge, malnutrition, and regular fighting.
So, if you suck at the game, you'll have pawns downed everyday (because you don't know how to play yet) and raids will never be larger than 3-4 guys with knifes and an handgun.
If you know what you're doing and know some of the meta, you'll have pawns getting downed maybe 2 or 3 times a year, and raids will be your usuall 12 man butt-raiding party.
Then there's people that don't play on commitment mode: a pawn gets downed? HOLY SHIT, HE'S FUKKEN LOST, TIME TO RELOAD MY SAVE. They then repeat this 4 or 5 times until they manage to RNG their way into winning a fight without a single pawn going down. Then the next raid happens, and there's 73 tribals wearing axes with your name on it.
Essentially, if you savescum into winning every fight without losing pawns, or reload when someone gets the plague to avoid it, the game will never see you struggle, and will scale the dificulty because in it's perspective, you must be really fucking good for keeping all your pawns healthy.
It's one of my favourite features of Rimworld, the dynamic dificulty. Not to say it's perfect, I use that "Combat Readyness Check" mod, because in Vannilla an 80 year old paraplegic with one arm contributes as many "Raid Points" as a Space Marine, and that's fucking retarded.
But I like games that adapt their dificulty to how I am playing. They never get too hard nor too easy.
Basically, it's what Godhand did for dificulty, but applied to a Colony Sim.
Or Unreal Tournament, if you're familiar with the "bots adapt dificulty to you".
>>16734229
You're that salty fuck that hangs around the RimWorld thread complaining about it.

>Intentionally letting people die
You don't need them to die. The "Raid Score" goes down when the Pawns enter the "Downed" state. It also happens when they die, so that's two instances of lowering the Raid Score per colonist, but then you lose someone.
Check here: https://rimworldwiki.com/wiki/Raider
Specifically, the "Raid strength" section.
You might notice one interesting thing.
When you're starting, you have 3 guys.
Imagine a couple months go by, the game is going to start spawning raids. But one of your guys was out hunting, a squirrel attacked him, and he was downed. Having 3 guys means the "Short Ramp Up Factor" goes back to 0 and the "Long Ramp Up Factor" goes to 1/5 of it's old value (actually, even less than that).
So, either the game won't have enough points to spawn a raid, or will , but it's a naked guy with a rock. Reason: the game knows you're down a pawn (recovering in bed) and the other two are working overtime to keep all 3 fed and healthy. The game is challenging you enough with a raiding asshole come to chuck spears at you.
However, if you hahd 16 guys, and lost one, the effect would be barely noticeable. Because when you have that many, having one of them in bed doesn't really matter that much, you still have 15 fighting-able pawns running around.

Of fucking course not. That would be retarded.
I could understand some penalties for rifles, or long weapons, but it's just stupid as hell to make this apply to all weapons.
Even with rifles, I'd say a penalty to hit'd be superior.
As to making melee useful, blocking or a dodge mechanic'd do that. Maybe up the melee damage a bit, as well.

Forgot to add: this is something that supposedly happens normally (no matter how well you play, you'll have pawns getting downed every now and then). Not something you have to worry and forcefully down pawns every and then to avoid the dificulty ramping up too had like >>16734229 complains.
Here's a strange consequence of this: Randy on Savage dificulty is harder to start with, but easier in the long term. Randy doesn't give a fuck, he'll knock down your pawns frequently.
But if you play Phoebe or Cassandra? You're fucked:
>Phoebe
She scales down the frequency of events and their strength, but that means you're early game consists of you constantly troucing on ill-equipped Raiders. You'll never learn how to play properly this way, the game doesn't challenge you… until you're 2-3 years in, and Phoebe drops you a 73 tribal raid on you (because the dificulty scaled high as fuck).
Cassandra might be even worse. It's almost like Phoebeb, but doesn't scale Raid intensity or it's frequency. You will almost surely run into large raids unless you pick at least "Rough" dificulty.
In short: play Phoebe for a while to learn the game.
Play Cassandra in "Rough" to test your skills at the game.
Play Randy "Savage" to have fun.
Or get that Lovecraft Storyteller and you'll have lots of fun. Lots and lots of fun, all over the map, all over your face, fun everywhere.

You're arguing for realism. I meant I didn't have an alternative from a gameplay point of view.
Realistically, yeah, it's stupid. Even long-barrelled guns, if you manage to kick someone a couple steps back, it's not hard to level the barrel at them and hipfire, at that range, accurancy doesn't matter.
From a gameplay perspective, mellee weapons would have no use without that.
I just wish he'd incorporate that "Simple Sidearms" mod into the game and be done with it. Simply letting the pawn keep two weapons would solve the problem entirely.

I gave a gameplay alternative as well, but, personally, I do not think it's enough of a problem to ever need a solution in the first place. Hell, I don't think it is a problem in the first place.
So what if melee isn't practical? It's melee. It doesn't have to be.

Speaking of terrible solutions to nonexistent problems… Oof.
Why not run a simple Dwarf Fortress method, and scale according to wealth and desirability of your fortress?
Who's going to raid a bunch of tribals in the ass end of nowhere, eating leftover rats?
Does explain why I've always had trouble with the things, though. No matter how heavy my defenses, the attacks always seem better. Evidently, it's because I don't tend to take risks, and as a result, the game decides 25+ tribals before I've got most basic production setups is totally fine.
Got any good recommendations for mods that balance this a tad more rationally?

Blocking and dodging is already in the game though. Pawns skilled in melee can sometimes dodge or block melee attacks. You can see it in the Log, or a little "dodged" text pops up above their heads briefly.

It does that already.
>Who's going to raid a bunch of tribals in the ass end of nowhere, eating leftover rats?
Noone. I'm currently playing a tribal game and I've gone years without raids, because all we have is a bunch of leather and some bone sculptures.
Do you know when it changed? A passing caravan told me about an Item stash reasonably nearby. I went there, and found some parts for robots. Well, fuck that, I'm too busy ogga-booging, but I figured I could trade those for a ton of smokeleaf.
I went there, grabbed the parts, and sure enough, 800$ for one, 1500$ for the other.
So now they're sitting in my stockpile, waiting for another caravan to pass me. But, while they've been there, I've already gotten 3 raids, something that didn't happen before.
I'm considering another expedition, just to get rid of the things and acquire weed. Blasted robotic thingamajigs are more trouble than they're worth at this point.
This is also the capital error most players make, btw: if you get something valuable, make sure it's something that actually helping your colony.
A very beatifull and decorated room CAN help if it's keeping your 20/20 warrior from going berserk, but if it's just for your cook to feel good about himself, it's actually detrimental.
>>16734993
It's a diferent experience. For one, you'll have to drop the "I wanna make something that looks good!" in favour of something that keeps you alive. Overtime, you CAN make cool-looking bases that still keep you alive while being efficient, but it takes time and lots of patience.
Also, in Chillax you'll get attached to your pawns. If you increase dificulty, don't. Pawns come and go. And by the time that old pawn covered in scares and with two peg-legs go, it will be a small mercy for him.

It really seems incredibly complex and immersive when I started, but then everything got really shallow and exploitable when I read up on the actual game mechanics (and in my defense, a couple of those game mechanics are a giant grind/deliberately mean-spirited if you don't meta-game them). Got really disappointed when I hit the end game and the 'spaceship that solves everything' just ends the game instead of giving another tier of gameplay, or even access to things the NPCs do routinely with spaceships.
>>16734799
Huh. So the insulting-spree retards that kept fighting each other (knocking out ~5 pawns per season) must have kept saving my bacon on the tutorial map. I'm trying not to meta-game, but I actually want the base to be filled with pawns that regularly fight one another?

>I actually want the base to be filled with pawns that regularly fight one another?
Not precisely. The best way to put it: you need conflict. For better or for worse, the tag line of the game is actually true: it's a storybuilder game. Not a colony sim.
Stories naturally have conflict, and Rimworld will make you face conflict one way or another.
Having a base packed with retards that constantly bash their faces looks like a good way to minimize raids. But on the other hand, your colonists will spend most of their time (and food) healing in bed from those bruises. Or you could force them to work anyway, but all those stat penalties mean they'll have trouble accomplishing much of anything.
I think I got 5 diferent "Dwarven Fortress" clones on my disk, along with actual DF.
All those clones eventually suffer from the same problem DF did: it's simply to easy to bypass/ignore conflict. Heck, if you cover your entrance in DF, raids are no longer a thing for instance.
There was that "Craft the World" cartoony clone that had some "send waves of enemies, need to defeat them to progress" thing that sort of worked.
But Rimworld is the only one of these clones that actively say: "Look man, I'm gonna fuck your shit up, and you gotta deal with it. I'm gonna do it at any time, in any way I choose, and all you can do is suck it up, fix your shit after I'm done and carry on".
It's definitely a very different experience from other games.
I just "finished" a Tribal game. I say finished because things had been spiraling downward for the last 4 hours I've been playing this save.
The cult I started met oposition from day 1, with some Agents visiting (and beating me up) with even some colonists beating up the preacher because they didn't agree with him.
The two cooks (females) constantly beat each other up because they were both fucking the same chad, a manly guy that hunted and built an awesome chapel made of bones of things he hunted. But this mean the two sluts kept knocking each other back into bed to heal from scratches. And I made the mistake of arming one with an axe to fight off a wild lynx. When she returned to the kitchen, the other one was there, and let's just say "bitche's arm" was that night's menu.
Then the chad died (mauled in hunting trip) and both bitches went crazy, which meant no food. The other tribe members were feelling misrable (no food, winter just arrived too) so they started drinking psycoid tea and smoking, until they passed out. One passed out near a campfire, the other out in the wild, on the fucking snow.
He froze, and one of the crazy bitches started eating him.
The precher tried to give a sermon, noone came because they were either mad, passed out, or dead. The preacher had a mental break, took a bow and decided to go hunting.
Hunting rhinoceros, that is. That were quick to angry and stomp on his stupid face.
The last guy standing, was the stoned and very shitfaced poor bastard near the campfire.
He woke up just in time to see 7 rhinoceros stampeding his way. Sadly, the psychite tea fucked up his leg coordination and running away was no longer an option.
I did learn a lot from this game. Shit I never thought about because I never played tribal.
For one, beauty and confort matter a lot because tribals don't have a lot of modlets to find. I think I'll start another save with an artist from the start, so I can plant some Tikki statues everywhere and keep'em happy.
I did get to enslave two girls, and try that Rape thing from RJW on them, but between fighting the insanity, the local fauna, and bitch's hormones, I didn't get a lot of raping done.
The only time I had visitors after enslaving them, they left quickly because of an heatwave. Talk about blueballs.

That is the quintessential Rimworld experience.
The game never actually try to END your game.
It will just kick you in the shin until you're really close to losing, stop and ask you if you want some more.
And then you say "fuck yeah", the survivors rebuild, recruit and recraft your shit, and you force the game to send tougher shit to deal with you because you're noone's bitch.

Did anyone mess with the bionic parts so far ? I always like having a transhumanist char because they get a nice mood buff from becoming robocop and also turn into a top-tier worker/fighter depending on what you upgrade.

>>16736306
Ambrosia is also fine if you keep it locked away when you dont need it. Safe to use and the mood buff can prevent wimpy characters from having a panic attack. Also ambrosia addiction is only a small debuff that disappears rather quickly, although its very rare.
I do stay away from the other stuff though, expect for keeping an emergency supply of the nanite stuff for SHTF emergencies where the character would die anyways.

I did, a bunch of saves before.
Combat-wise: you beat anything non-augmented with relative ease and injuries aren't a big problem anymore. However, if you get surrounded by 8 tribals, your robocop will be turned into robot trash.
The biggest draw of bionics is the lack of pain associated with them. And infection. They make for good end game content, I think, but they're only trully effective when you've got a squad of augs: 5-7 guys that take forever to go down, shoot really accurately or clobber you really well with enhanced strength.
If you like that, however, try that Android mod.
They still eat (half of what a human does), they don't sleep, but can be upgraded incrementally.

Because pic related is the end game I'm aiming at.
But for now, I tried starting with a few of them, T2 Androids, and they were woefully inpet at everything.
The dedicated scenario for them has them start without weapons, so I had to make some clubs quickly because starvation was setting in. Then I had to use all 3 of them to hunt a single deer, and they still got beat up pretty badly. This continued for a while until I sucesfully made a bow while Cookbot was making deer-stew. Hunt-bot grabbed the bow and set off all giddy to hunt. First ever shot he landed angered some Ibex, and those bastards came to my base and sucessfully murdered the other two.
Getting to Necron Tomb World tier is gonna take a while, I think.
I might be fucking retarded, but if I lock my colonists inside buildings, do manhunting animals eventually calm down? I'm starting to think I'm retarded for trying to fight back.

>>16741263
>my starving guy decides to do drugs and pass out then starve to death
See, a new player to this game will think that the problem is the pawn was dumb, and therefore the game is dumb.
If you look back at your colony, you'll notice that something happened BEFORE that, something that set that pawn on a downward spiral, until the depressed fucker decided to get baked and end it all.
I remember a base I had that failed for one simple reason: I purposedly disabled "Cleaning" on all pawns. I wanted to make an Orky fortress (but didn't have race mods for it), so fuck cleaning, we live like pigs, right guys?
What happened is that people were getting slightly pissed because everything was covered in shit. They also got slightly pissed that the kitchen was dirty and that meant the meal had a side-dish of "Medium-Rare-Dirt".
And then one day, some bitch said no to the local incel and the incel decided to RISE UP GAMERS. A few punches were thrown and soon the messhall corridor was splattered in blood. The thot and the incel are dragged back to their quarters, but the Toth has a fucking existencial crisis because suddendly her face hurts too much, breaks some furniture and bitch slaps a soldier.
From then on, it was a week or so of people getting pissed, fighting, splattering blood all over the place and then spending time in bed to heal, overstressing the doctors, the cooks and the security guys.
Overtime, more and more people were fighting and going on Mental Breaks, the time between one incident and the next start shorttening until I had 9 guys out of 12 on a Mental Break simulatenous.
Now, when that raider party of 7 hit, and I had 3 guys (one had 3 in mellee and nothing else) to defend my base with, I could blame the game like you. "Fuck this mental break shit, oh you ate without a table, BOO FUCKING WOO".
But consider that the problems were clearly mounting and I had ample opportunity to stop it earlier. Heck, I could have banished both Toth and Incel back into the wild as a drastic measure.
Instead, I was forced to accept that, yeah, I fucked up and let their autism run too rampant.
So those 3 guys took half a dozen guns, a few meals and a muffallo, went off into the sunset to found a new colony (hey, almost like New Game +) and as a bonus, I had the pleasure of seeing a raiding party hunting and killing 9 fucking autistic shitheads that couldn't fucking accept some low-hygiene standards.
I even got to scavenge the old base a bit before actually moving on.

Dining Hall is one the most important buildings, followed shortly by an impressive Rec Room.
A good (nothing too spectacular) dining room will slap a +10 mood on every colonist. Twice a day. It's that good, and all it needs is some cleaning, a statue and a couple good tables.
Rec room does the same but only once a day (unless you have rec time set up more than once).
Both buffs stay for a long time too, so you can easily keep a +20 on just those two rooms.
Slap a "Nice Bedroom" buff for another +5 (all you need is a nice looking bed a statue and a plantpot, the other furniture helps even more).
One thing of note: don't put lights in bedrooms like >>16738949 did. Absolutely uncessary.
Sleeping pawns don't gain the "Darkness" debuff, and they only use the room for sleeping (or sex, but even with RJW they don't spend long enough in there to gain the debuff).
And some wise advice: don't make a Dining Room with Jade Walls, Gold Furniture and smooth tiled floor. Just don't. The raiders will want to eat there as well. As in: all of the raiders. All the time.

Well if I was going to design a "starship" base, I'd do like this
>Steel walls
>Steel tile floors
>Corridors 1 tile wide
>Autodoors only
>Rooms are all separate and connected to the central "hull"
>Exits to the outside must be "airlocks" with at least 2 doors
>Solar Power
Build it like the vanilla Starships.

Had a new run. 4 colonists, 2 SoB's, two IG women.
Just went to explore and abandoned base with 2 pawns (Conicidently, both were Sisters of Battle) only to find 3 factions fighting over it when the map loaded.
a bunch of hostile humans (that look like the original owners of the base), the tau and a few eldar were in a shootout.
I waited for the worst to settle and stormed in, only to have notification that another faction is drop-podding in!
Turned out it was the Sisters of Battle and they cleared all the remaining enemies and left me alone since we were allied.
Then they proceeded to quite literally rape the only still living enemy (an eldar female) to death (I had RWJ installed) before leaving.
For some bizzare reason I couldn't re-form the caravan, I had to manually load some valuable and leave by map edge. But it was a very rich base, sadly I could only take a few bits.
The game must have derped something, because when some Salamaders came for a visit, with them came the sister of one of the IG colonists. She was an eldar. And she's now part of the colony (responsible for research, art and …"entertaining" the two SoB's).

Every few months I grab some new mods, tweak some old and go back to Rimworld. Just recently that CK super dense and rainy jungle mod got updated and just days ago there was a magical beasts mod with chimeras and hydras and shit. I needed to "balance" the models by making them all huge and monstrous and the minotaur not a fucking herbivore, but it's good now. 8/v/irgins' eternal asshurt over Rimworld will never not puzzle me, maybe it's just one dedicated autist.
Had this bit of tragic bullshit happen the other day. Brand new colony, saw the giant spiders had cocooned three whole tigers and sent my mans out to bring them home in the dead of night. Next day I realize my mistake as giant spiders beeline to my base to eat from their cocoons, then hang around, ready to eat my pets and colonists as soon as the tigers are gone.
So I pile up my pitiful trio of tribals in front of each horse-sized spider as it comes to feed, and I pile all my animals between them so I don't lose anyone who matters.
Just as my archers are firing at the last spider, little Leonara nuzzles one of them, and in the instant Howi knows they're best buds for life. The very next instant is a klaxon blaring in my ear as my new bonded kittycat has just had her head exploded in front of Howi mid-nuzzle.
Howi proceeded to be a cunt and go on food binges three times over the next two weeks of mood penalty after her several seconds of pet ownership were brutally put to an end.

You can manually drop things from inventories at any time, and you can place a free sleeping spot and tend friendly pawns anywhere.
Enemies can only be taken to a prison bed (which needs an enclosed space), which actually is retarded and very frustrating when your perfect new recruit is 3 hours' carry from your nearest building with 2 hours left til bleedout.

I find that rimworld is better for a fast game, where you only really have a couple hours, maybe even just 30 minutes, to play.
DF is definitely far superior, but, it also takes a little longer to start up, takes much longer for things to actually happen, and has a nasty habit of sucking you in with a "just one more lighter set up, just one more infinite power generator, just one more trap corridor" lock that makes it so I end up not bothering to sleep, missing work by a good three hours.

>Everything it does, DF does better.
Not medical. DF has you setup an hospital and keeping it stocked with basic supplies, everything else is hands-off and decided by the dwarves, an incredibly detailed but passive system.
Meanwhile, Rimworld lets you decide to perform several surgeries at any time, replace and harvest organs, injest drugs and the like, something the mod community heavily expanded upon as well.
It might not have as much details as Dwarf Fortress, despite already having quite a lot, but it's far more active and on your hands than DF ever is.
Farming is also done a lot better, considering you have fertility as a factor in the ground, the sunlight, hydroponics, plagues, plants that have more uses than just beer or food, etc.
DF has you making a cistern with water that you can flood a few tiles for mud where you grow your shit and that's it for your input.
I also dislike the ridiculous amount of different rocks in DF. They serve no point besides "muh realism". Rimworld has only like 5-6 different types of rock, that have mostly the same statistics but change on their color, meaning that you get rock to build stuff and different types for different colors, which is more than enough.
The combat is also far better. DF has a ridiculous amount of detail, but you're going to mostly see blinking dwarves on the battlefield with blood sprays every now and then and all of said detail will be on a blog to read later.
Meanwhile, Rimworld gives a better and clearer presentation of what's happening, a far better control scheme to handle your pawns in combat (I could have swear that DF only implemented the X targetting to direct squads after RW existed, but I'm not sure on that timeline) and more variety in weaponry since you also have mines, grenades and other weapons to use.
The Job Tab is also a funny detail because it's essentially ingame Dwarf Therapist and while Rimworld, with it's low population settlements doesn't really need it, Dwarf Fortress would massively improve if it was implemented to the point that pretty much every DF-clone you can find in the market (Gnomoria, Oxygen not included, Embark, Craft the World, Rimworld) already includes it by default.
It helps to organize priorities in a community far better.
The modding community has also arguably better results. The mods are much smaller in scope, but you can easily combine them instead of having to rely on overhauls all the time and you can find plenty of Quality of Life improvement mods or changes to the UI like all the extra tabs and stuff like the Colony Organizer.
DF mostly sees more races, items, creatures or interactions that use already inbuilt systems, meaning that you get more of the base game with a different color.
Meanwhile, in Rimworld you can have a Tzimisce Sith Lord that worships Hastur in his fight against the Chaos Space Marines.
I guess that Rimworld is admitidaly a smaller game, even with mods, than DF is. But it knows very well what it is and handles itself decently for that. It set out to be a colony survival game, stayed like that during it's development and that's what it came out as in 1.0.
Meanwhile, Dwarf Fortress started as a third person open world game with Slaves to Armok, migrated to a roguelike with a lot of detail, then to a fortress simulation, then back and forth between both modes and outright refuses to change much of the way it's played, despite how outdated it is because that's part of it's identity now.
Biggest characteristic is that, despite all the RNG, Rimworld still puts a lot of input in the hands of the player and let's him interact with the world and the pawns to make decisions far more than DF does, where most things are quite passive once setup and you just wait for something to fuck it up so you can learn how you should have prepared for it instead since you'll likely not be able to fix it at that point.
DF is broader and deeper, but RW is reactive and interactive. It's the difference between reading a good, big book or chatting with a friend instead.

I'd be more inclined to agree with you if it weren't that most the things you mention either don't matter, are completely random, wasn't actually any better than dwarf fortress anyway, or was implemented so poorly as to not be anything more than a point-and-click.
I am mainly looking at farming and combat, with the last bit. Farming, especially, is so terribly meaningless, it actually seems to have less depth to me than dwarf fortress. at least dwarf fortress actually keeps track of seeds, meanwhile in rimworld, near as I can tell, all I ever bothered to do is zone an area, deal with random events that kill all my crops because the game just throws around random events, and work towards getting a simple hydroponic setup.
my biggest problem with rimworld as it is is that every single game I play is ultimately the exact same run. I almost never have anything to actually substantially puts my colonies in a different set up or system. Even colonies which are primarily populated by cannibals and psychopaths, as opposed to the normal process, are functionally identical, with the singular exception that I can harvest more organs from prisoner, instead of just having them die off so I can use their meat or kibble.
The comet system is where I have to draw the biggest line, though. combat in rimworld has always felt like nothing more than pointing at the enemy, and telling my palms to go after that guy. When it comes to actual effect oh, the stats hardly seem to do anything, and overall, it's all basically just luck-based. at least with dwarf fortress, I can properly train my recruits, outfit them relatively early, and actually somewhat plan their formations. Moreover, I can assign permanent guards, who actually maintain their needs, but also patrol a particular area. I can assign uniforms, for anybody who joins into a squad, or is ever drafted into the military. There's a wide range of armaments and equipment for specific purposes, as well. I can adjust what I give my dwarves based more around what I actually need, as opposed to simply giving everybody a gun, and a sidearm if I've got the mod.
In war fortress, I rate the literally trained both axedwarves, swordsdwarves, wrestlers, and crossbowdwarves in fairly equal numbers, most of the time, because they all had a distinctive usefulness. Swordsman seem to always inflict I'm more steady stream of damage, where is the axedwarves would tend to kill enemies or main them in single strikes, and the wrestlers would usually end up hitting the enemy until somebody else can properly finish them off. Of course crossbows we're a bit more generic, and their utility, you just put them on one side of a moat and let them get to work. But still.
mostly what I think ends up making me dislike rimworld is how random the system is, when it comes to events and difficulty. In dwarf fortress, there seems to always be a rationale behind any given event. Whether it be because you dug too deep and released the horrors that had been there for centuries, or because you produced and sold so much wealth but it became obvious your fortress would be an excellent attack for any raiders, or because you decided to dig into an aquifer and flood the entire chasm, things always seem to happen for a reason. In rimworld, most of the time, things just happen and that's it. You have to deal with the consequences of them. they were completely outside of your control, completely unpredictable, completely impossible to prepare against by large, and worst of all, have a nasty habit of coming in multiples.
Maybe this is because I'm more of a /tg/ guy, but, I don't really enjoy that kind of thing. I play more for the creation of a story, then I do as a mindless game.
I like the world building, I don't really like being raided out in the middle of nowhere on an icy and empty island by random tribals before a plague strikes.

DF creates random situations "organically" from the interactions between its different systems, Rimworld replaces this intricacy with hard RNG for the most part and the possible events in an unmodded game are rather few. Heck, I don't think there's even a mod that adds a substantial amount of new random events even though it would be simple enough. I'm not talking about the storytellers that govern WHEN something occurs but the events themselves. It all comes down to "something falls from the sky" or "something turns aggressive and attacks you".

Even Minecraft has better farming then Rimworld. I get your criticism of keeping track of pointless details which bogs the game down (literally) but I refuse to accept that a system which amounts to waiting on the RNG is superior to a system that actually keeps tracks of what is happening. Maybe you don't consider that consistency important but I do.

Sounds like he has rimworld of magic installed. Chronomancers in that mod of an annoying tendency to age backwards. Just be careful, I used time reversal to heal a sick cow and accidentally unbirthed it

Yeah it's pretty good. It's supposed to be balanced because raiders can be wizards, too, but they arent nearly as smart as you are and you'll btfo them every time. Despite that, I enjoyed it. Especially with the wizard gear they added I felt like it gave me a reason to pay attention to what clothes I assign my colonists. And a max level summoner is just lots of fun 'cause you can launch him out of a drop pod, have him solo a bandit camp, and then teleport back to your colony.

Maybe I'll give it a shot, thanks. I usually tend towards mods that just refine the vanilla experience (Colored mood bars, expanded prosthetics etc.) but I think I'm in the mood for something different.
