Let's talk about free video games, and post a few recommendations for the stuff that we've played recently. Let's write down how long the games are just so that we know what is just a short experience and what is a full-fledged game.
For me I have played Strayation, which is one of those horror games trying to ape PS1 created for a game jam. Incredibly simple but seems to have a very interesting premise and is very short, so it won't take more than 10 minutes of your time. I like the fact that everything seems to be some kind of virtual reality machine that went horribly wrong with your character being a character made to fix the mess the writing seems like something straight out of SCP when it wasn't shit yet

Spelunky is one the best platforming games in PC history and the original is and always has been free. There was also a surprisingly large modding scene for it too, including one where you get to play as a maneater plant. I swear there was a Metroid mod for classic Spelunky too but I can't find it

America's Army:Proving Grounds is another FPS, but without regenerating health or even health pickups. No respawn until next round either. Limited choice of load-out and that is also class limited, but you can pick up the primary from dead enemies. I miss the original AA, but this is pretty close and has a modified version of the old Bridge map.

The only free video game I really play is SCP Secret Lab, and that's just because it's the only multiplayer game with survival horror elements, like limited inventory, item management, etc.
It's a bit bare bones compared to prime RE Outbreak, and the online is fucking cancerous, but sometimes you get good servers. And by that I mean only around 7 people so it's one SCP and a healthy balance of 1 FaG, 2 Nerds, 3 D-Class.
It also has the replayability of Survival Horror games, since I've put 190 hours into it. It technically has multiple endings but those are just win conditions. Shame the dev is a lazy pol who decided working with 079 was too much effort.

Theres a game on itch.io called Roguelight, its a mildly fun platformer in a completely dark dungeon. You have a bow, your arrows are all on fire, and theyre your main source of light. You can hold your arrows in the bow, or fire them into the wall / enemies as needed. You also can only hold a very limited number of arrows, their fire slowly dwindles the longer its been since you readied it, and your goal is to venture deeper downward.
Its a pretty nice time killer and casual experience.

Sonic Robo Blast 2. It's a 3D Sonic fangame built on the Doom Legacy sourceport of Doom, and it has been in development for over twenty damn years. It's pretty good, though some zones aren't complete, and the controls can take some getting used to. It has a pretty dedicated modding community, with SRB2 Kart being the crowning jewel of the game's mods. It's getting an update, supposedly this year, which will massively overhaul the game, as it will be the first version to include physics-affecting slopes in the levels (the engine has supported them for a while, and there are already community-wads which utilize them).

Team Fortress 2 is a classic game, and its almost free to play (You will need to spend something on the store to get space in your backpack, so just get a cheap & useful weapon, or anything usefull that is not a mere cosmetic and you are fine). Also heard about SCP Laboratory, and well, I never played Paladins, but I heard at its time that it wasnt a bad game. Is that true? How better is compared to Overwatch (Which I never played either)? Any point in playing it now?
Besides that, cant thing of anything good at the moment that is free too; Rest is typical popular shit like League of Legends. DOTA 2 too by looking at it now (Wasnt this game priced before? Well looks like Valve made it free) and the likes.
