Games weren't dumbed down for consoles. Consoles were good at different things. It was a technological marvel when some dudes managed to get a poor copy of Super Mario Bros. running on a PC in the early '90s, since most computers still couldn't even do smooth scrolling. Go look at PC games from the '80s. They're garbage compared to the NES. Europoor nostalgia can't change that. There were a couple genres they slowly started to get better at, like RTS games, but they were niche. Well into the mid-2000s, the PC versions of games would be completely gimped, frequently being entirely different games than the console counterparts the kids surely thought they were getting. It was bait and switch tactics. It was only with the rise of Steam due to The Orange Box inviting casuals with THE CAKE IS A LIE XD and the fact that they could socialize with their friends on Left 4 Dead that PC games started to have a wide enough audience that anyone other than niche devs paid attention to it, and even then, to this day, most people still run absolute toasters, far below what people on /v/ think a toaster is, so they still only run garbage on it.
None of this is to say that the niche genres that did better on PC pre-2007 don't have merit. Plenty of them do, but it largely comes down to taste, to what genres you like. Except point and clicks. They're garbage that lead to the modern story "games" that helped to ruin the industry.
