Underrail's first expansion just released on GOG. Anyone played it yet? How is it compared to base game?

Here it is, Underrail + Expedition expansion: https://mega.nz/#!br5E1KBA!hhgAK2dbFKOQRmM59E3_RmXO4NL1ZGgDXBbKJZ_jln4
For anyone new to the game here is some handy reference material:
Underrail Wiki: http://www.underrail.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page
Underrail Character Builder: http://underrail.info.tm/build/
Underrail Forum: http://underrail.com/forums/index.php
This is a very minmax focused game, you cannot make a jack of all trafes, if you do you might reach mid-game then you will start to get your shit slapped something fierce as the difficulty hikes. Use the builder to explore your options, or check the Underrail forums for builds, the Wiki is also invaluable but resist the urge to spoil yourself too much. The build I'm going with is a machete/sword wielding dude with high Dex and Temporal Manipulation.
If you enjoy the game then consider buying it, dev is entirely uncucked and there are still plans for future updates and content expansions (though nothing on this scale).

Large subterranean lake/sea comprising an additional ~250 maps. 3 new weapon types, a new psi school, a ton of new feats, level cap increased from 25 to 30, and some new levelling features (specializations and veteran feats). There are also jet-skis in the DLC used for traversing water maps.

For anyone new to the game, "Z" toggles feature highlighting, which will highlight containers and other things you can interact with, press it frequently to ensure you don't miss hard to spot containers. Additionally you can now increase game speed while out of combat, by default this is bound to "+" and "-", though "+" seems janky so "[" and "]" may be better. This is a godsend for moving/doing supply/bank runs.

I have a feeling that lot of people who had problems with the game's difficulty found the movement speed too tedious for thorough exploration, which is rather required for early level ups with the Oddity system. My "build" was hap-hazardous mix of things I found interesting, but I didn't have that much trouble.

I recall back in the day some anons would post their armored police builds. Does anyone have them saved?
>>16718299
It's got its share of problems and quirks, but overall it's a very solid game. As many anons mention, the game can be very unforgiving at times, so you have to commit to your character build at all times. Fortunately, the combat system is very intricate and balanced so that there is a lot of variety among viable builds.
Story and characters are just kinda there. They're not particularly bad, but they're not memorable either. Same can be said about the visual design - it's pretty consistent and easy to read, but not that interesting or original aesthetically.
Overall I definitely recommend it if you're into challenge and willing to put up with major difficulty spikes. You might want to check some build guides before playing to avoid common pitfalls - a bad character build at the start of the game can come back to bite you in the ass several hours later forcing you to restart from the beginning.
>>16718395
The question you asked could be answered by simply looking the game up in a search engine of your choice. Nobody wants to spoonfeed (you).

Yep, I got about 15 hours into a multiclass type character (stealth and some psi) and had to restart the game due to being unable to pass a wall of skill checks. Totally killed my interest in the game.

Dunno about armored police builds, but the Riot Armor got buffed so they'll have improved, its threshold bonus has a flat +2 buff over and above what's received from crafting materials, and the multiplier is increased from 75% to 100%. There are also some feats now which buff shields, though considering the scarcity of feats I'm not sure how viable they are.
>>16718299
I love the combat system, but beyond that I can't really explain why I enjoy the game despite disliking most other CRPGs. As for negatives:
- Travel is somewhat tedious due to there only being a handful of quick-travel points, though the new speed modifier helps.
- They heavy focus on min-maxing means you can't really have much variety in your build. For example it's not really possible to make a character who uses some kind of weapon and a single psi-school well, because to deal competitive damage at higher levels with psi requires maxing out Will, which would cripple your Perception (and hence damage and accuracy with guns). Slight exception to this is the new Temporal Manipulation school, it only has one damage spell that scales with Will, for the others you just need enough points in the associated skill to learn them, no need to pump Psi, making it viable as an add-on to a build.
- To continue the above, builds generally consist of a bunch of secondary stats you only increase to hit breakpoints that give you useful feats, then one primary stat you max out entirely which will be associated with your weapon type. Dexterity based builds get some more freedom than others, as they can easily also make use of throwing weapons and traps (though with just 30 throwing you get a nice grenade feat so anyone can use it sorta well). Beyond that you generally need to patch up weaknesses in your build with consumables and other gear you find, buy or make in the game. Even dexterity based builds may struggle to fit beneficial feats for secondary skills into their build though.
- There are many situations in which you just have to get your kill on and murder some poor chump when you should logically be able to resolve it peacefully by negotiation, but the dialogue options don't cover it. This is made worse because the persuasion and intimidation skills both scale off Will exclusively for some reason, so you'll struggle to level them to use what options there are unless you're a psion.
- Doesn't bother me too much but the shop system is kinda unique, vendors only buy fixed quantities of things per shop reset (which occurs every few hours) and have limited funds, this is semi-random but if you visit a few times you'll have a good idea what kind of things they generally buy. This requires some planning to maximize income, because you can't just dump everything you don't want on people for cash. You'll generally repair then sell valuable stuff, but might just need to recycle less valuable stuff into repair kits because sell slots are scarce. The mercantile skill reduces buy prices and a feat associated with it increases the amount of things vendors buy and their available cash, but I've found it somewhat tricky to fit this into a build.

Underrail is great, almost on par with AoD, imo. Dungeon Rats is literally just a dungeon crawl with AoD combat (with some small quality of life changes thrown in). There is VERY LITTLE story (almost none beyond a couple very short dialogues), it is strictly about combat. That being said, it's pretty fun and really hard, just don't expect it to be anything like AoD save for the mechanics.

It's an expansion reached within the base game. Midgame, I think. You simply fast travel there from a certain point, if you so choose. The expansion also adds a fuckload of other content for base game, like perks and skills, items, etc. etc.

I've gotten up to the start of the Aramadillo Board quest with a machete build and I'm starting to hate it. The build perks basically let you stack shitloads of damage + crit and let you launch a silly amount of hits per turn if you keep hitting without missing. But it's a pain in the ass currently as in any challenging fight a miss basically becomes an automatic reload even with grenades, caltrops, and temporal manipulation reducing the 3 turn cooldown. Sometimes I just triple crit and murder some fairly tough enemy in one Flurry, other times I miss on the first hit, stall for 3 turns then miss on the first hit again, even after using stun or nets to drop their dodge. From the look of it the damage it can put out come endgame is excessive to the point I'd probably be more interested if the raw damage was cut down a tad but became less unreliable.
I think I'll go for a shotgun build instead, they seem solid all-round, a cursory look at spear perks gives me the impression they kinda lack damage, and the defensive bonuses only help against melee opponents.

It's not quite Fallout/Arcanum, and I don't recall any segments where you can't progress if you invested in the wrong skills, there are multiple points where skill differences will unlock completely new sections. The game almost had it, it was almost Fallout X Metroid in terms of it's games design decisions, there are certainly a lot of points where you realize where you are after wandering for an hour, and it feels great.

Literally just close doors. I don't recall how exactly I've destroyed robots before, but it was absolutely risk free. It involves closing/opening doors, throwing EMP grenades through doorways, double lightning spell via feats, and sealing passages with forcefield (probably just to close doors safely when EMP stun runs out).

It was something like: enter a cavern, throw a fireball into the center to wake them all up, get into a corner and wall myself off, set up telekinetic proxy and nuke the vicinity when the wall goes down with HE grenades, proxy and AoE spells, then wall myself off again and repeat. There's also self-immolation spell, I think enemies avoid stepping onto the fire tiles.

I wish I knew why then because it seems like shortly after you beat Core City, it's like entering Hell mode in Diablo 2 as a sorceress. Everyone has some level of resistance to your elemental attacks. They were devastating before that as you said. I always maxed Metathermics and sometimes had one other maxed as well, took all the good looking psionic feats I saw. As far as I could tell the only thing I did wrong was also try to be sneaky, because I didn't really have any way of knowing that psionics and stealth did not synergize at fucking all before I started short of spoiling the whole game for myself. But my psionic skills were all maxed.

I bet that's the problem. I've had all psi skills maxed specifically to get the skill synergy bonus to boost me above the cap as much as possible. There's also the psi-beetle carapace you can craft armor with, and some kind of psi helmet, I think? So crafting skill is important too, up to a required point.

That sounds like the major flaw in my build then. I really like the crafting in this game but it does seem like you are locked into getting certain supporting skills for certain builds, for example biology to get the psi armor you mentioned. I also neglected to get the full skill synergy bonus.
For the record, I rerolled a dude that specializes in heavy firepower with some science and engineering for crafting his gear and he is way more effective, with more guns and ammo than I know what to do with.

Here's a starting build for a Psi character: http://underrail.info.tm/build/?AQMDAwoDCggAAAAAAAAADwAAAAAAAAAADw8PDw8PDytjCN-_
Intelligence is taken to 8 so we can use every crafting skill, note you don't need to max these out, refer to this guide for a rough idea of breakpoints: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=843557165
Will is obviously taken to 10 and we take Constitution to 10 because Thick Skull is a godsend for a Psi character, and we can't really afford agility to go for dodge. Conditioning is great so we're using that too, and I'd suggest grabbing fast metabolism at level 2 for that bonus to Psi gained from boosters and a nice healing bonus. These are basically all the Constitution feats we need, after this you're free to decide what feats you'd like on your own, though reference to guides would be wise. As we have no dodge you want to craft Riot Gear or a Tactical Vest with a Psi-Bug carapace to boost your psionics as soon as possible, so I'd suggest advancing hacking somewhat slowly (our boost from int means we should have enough effective skill to get everything anyway) and trying to have ~30 tailoring and mechanical skill, as well as ~10 biology by the time you're sent to GMS compound, at which point you should visit Junkyard and try to make one. Persuasion is nice and can save you some money but if you'd rather be able to increase crafting faster you can dump it. I'd suggest having some mercantile as it helps with heavy crafting a fair bit and will make up for not being able to pick locks.
It's hard to mess this build up, just increase Will at every opportunity and make wise Feat choices, it's somewhat basic defensively (high HP + constitution feats + tactical/riot gear), but with the additional options psi gives you this shouldn't be a problem.

Ah so this game does follow the Fallout pattern of "INT is the best stat" and "everything should either be min or maxed". I admit I expected it to be a little less extreme in that regard, although my new build seems to work okay. I don't typically enjoy min maxing though, I usually try to go for something that intuitively makes sense to me and try not to make poor choices. I figured I was safe with "sneaky psion" because mage/thief is a long and treasured archetypal build in tabletop and CRPGs, but apparently not in this one (or maybe I just didn't min max correctly) My lack of Constitution was definitely my greatest mistake judging by the build you just linked though.

It's not working out too well, crafting is a chore and is not worth the effort and material hunting thus far, since you can just plain buy those same items with less hassle. Can't find a single unarmed weapon aside from plain gloves and I can't craft shock gauntlet because there is no power core in sight. I've been using knives and a crossbow with some thrown items here and there. Psi powers are not what I expected them to be at all. Not just Force emission. Force Field is pretty much essential to a melee build because it prevents the enemy from just sniping you. You use it to block line of sight and make the enemy come to you, or to provide cover while you go to the enemy. Telekinetic Proxy also duplicates Force Emission.
Having a sledgehammer as a secondary weapon is pretty valuable too, helps for penetrating extremely high damage threshold.

If you have a lot of trouble with the GMS Compound, try going to Lucas or the Junkyard merchants and getting a blueprint for riot armor or a tactical vest. Even if you're a stealth character, the 30% armor penalty if you're not stupid enough to use a shield is tolerable that it won't impact your operating enough to fuck you over. Get tazers, too, just because they're cheap and can stun most things if they get too close and you need to yabba dabba the fuck out.

>>16722458
Even early game, if you make yourself a tactical vest from somewhat high quality parts (say 60 or so, though the carrier vest doesn't matter). You become virtually immune to small arms fire excepting crits. If you make one before GMS compound the robots sometimes just cannot harm you at all. However crossbow users will still fuck you up if you're not meaty, they can easily one-turn a character with less than 100 HP, and that's before you even take electric bolts stunning you into account.

sage for doubleposting
I've heard people call it cheesing, but I lured them out of the main hallway in groups of 2 or alone, so they couldn't really call for backup. After that, take a couple of potshots and hide around the corner to force them to use up a healing item. I used vents to collect all the stuff I could carry and set up a mine in front of the mess hall. 0 points in hacking, so turret was out of the question and 7 strength meant I couldn't jam open the vent for hostages. After that it was all about navigating corners and managing stuns/area denial.

I haven't encountered a fight in the entire game that couldn't be won by putting down traps, hiding in vents, and generally acting like you're fighting Russians in the Winter War. Caltrops and bear traps don't require any major skill investments to use, and are useful more for the virtue of area control than they are straight damage. I can't speak for the poisonous ones, though, since I haven't made a build that would use them. Considering I rarely see enemies popping antidotes, though, I'd say it's a fair guess they'd be pretty fucking good. I never saved the hostages by intent, I just threw grenades in the room and camped the corner with an SMG on burst. It was only by good fortune that they lived when I did my first character as a metal armor/AR goon. With my sniper they all just ran into the caltrops and bled to death.

Here's my Psi build so far (start of GMS compound).
Besides the visible skills I have 30 points in Hacking, since I'm not really using Temporal Manipulation much at the moment I dropped a few points in it to meet crafting requirements while keeping Mercantile maxed. After GMS I'm going to start increasing electronics to make Psi equipment and a Taser while obtaining some better parts to make a better Tactical Vest. One notable downside to this build is that you can't take advantage of vents at all, you don't have enough strength to force them or dexterity to pick them. Later in the game once crafting skills are up though it'll be possible to make some minor use of stealth with a cloaking device and some good Black Cloth on a tactical vest. Nothing too exciting with feats so far but offensively oriented ones are what I'm gonna be going for next.

This skill with three points in it's specialization gives 27 extra action points per turn on kill. Usually, it wouldn't be worth it because of the 90% landing rate, but with Expert Throwing from level 26 it will pretty much always be 100% with all levelup points in Dexterity and all skill points into Throwing. For reference, with 18 dexterity it costs 10 AP to knife someone, so that's 17 extra AP per turn for free and every melee attack is 4 AP. I wish there would be enough space to get Three-Pointer and Grenadier, but there's just too much other stuff to get.

Persuasion offers some nice little cash savings, and the opportunity to use diplomacy at some points rather than going murderhobo, I always take it on any build with Will as it's nice to have and with high Will doesn't take many skill points.
Intimidation is basically a shittier version of Persuasion, and most of the people you use it on are dicks you won't be bothered about murderhoboing anyway. Though it does notably have the Yell feat which lets you debuff nearby enemies: http://www.underrail.com/wiki/index.php?title=Yell despite this I don't bother using it.
Mercantile also offers a lot of nice dialogue options that let you obtain extra cash (in some cases A LOT of extra cash). Pay less for things, offer to pay someone to fuck off instead of having to fight them, or some combination thereof. It also reduces the the cost of buying things in shops gradually, with a decent investment this will make managing cash a lot easier over the course of a game. It also has some feats that give shopkeepers more available cash and allow them to buy more items from you per reset. However you probably need both of these feats for either to be worth taking, and with the scarcity of feats you'll likely never want to spend 2 feat slots on this.
In short persuasion is a no-brainer on high Will builds, Mercantile is a no-brainer on high Int builds, Intimidation kind of sucks but has a neat feat. The social skills would probably see wider use if they had alternative scalings like:
Persuasion: Scales on higher of Will or Intelligence
Intimidation: Scales on higher of Will or Strength.
Mercantile: Scales on high of Will or Intelligence.
Since they're stuck to one stat they're basically just a nice bonus on particular builds.

The Game is nice.
I want to kill everyone in the communist cabal. But i have to keep my power level low and get more shit and exp befor i start to clean that shittery of camp. The Game as an underline tone of communism. Even when you go to a weapon shop, you do not only pay with money, you can trade with other goods. etc…
The Story
non existing. There is a lot to read but there is no plot or anything, no red line you could follow. You are the new guy, you made the test and now you do jobs for the communist leader. Learn about the world of underrail and their enemies. Thats it. As soon i get enough power i will start my own story, cleaning this communist cabal with the force of god.
The Gameplay
Old school west rpg, turn based. It has some bugs, save bugs and so on. It doesn't really feal smooth. sometimes you missclick and instead to attack you walk around the enemy. You are either overpowerd in one skill or you melee through the thinn caves while having a hard time seeing yourself behind a wall or the enemy. Turn on the outlines in battle mode to see at least something. This is a big contra, you can't see behind walls and often do they block the view.
the technic
indie level, some minor bugs, framerate good, enginee runs almost smooth. Sometimes you get an error: map couldn't load. And the game set you back to the last save. Save again and your save is gone. But all these little bugs are not gameplay breaking.
the sidenotes
developer was a faggot, and mostly a communist. He fucked up his code on purpose so you don't mod his game. yada yada and some other arguments later, game is still unmoddable. It is also way overpriced, around 50 euros for the full packet. While anon already deliverd a downlode here, (which you only can download when you get a mega account and pay 5 communist bugs a month) you might also consider to search up ovagames and get the gog version from there.
anyway, game is playable, it is nice and has good artwork. You also get the freedom to kill all communist so i guess this makes it less shitty.

What level were you when you took on the "bums", the guys you mentioned are Ironheads, they're post-Junkyard enemies. You can basically think of that spot as being like going to graveyard at the start of Dark Souls except due to RPG scaling much more punishing. Early on however you can become virtually bulletproof barring snipers and crits if you make a good tactical vest and use a Kevlar Balaclava and Tabi. You can end up with ~50 mechanical threshold vs bullets which most guns can't even touch at that point in the game.
As far as Psi-Monk goes, any hybrid build is inherently harder to pull off than a focused build. The strongest builds generally have one stat that just gets maxed all the way to 16, then a few secondary stats around 5-7 for certain feats/weapon requirements/etc. There are a few exceptions to this such as SMG burst spam abuse builds but that's the general rule.

I finally managed to kill them with the help of the grenadier missing his molotov and hitting the mine instead, put his partner down 60% hp.
I just leveled up after clearing caves of pigs, boars and rathounds, I always max out my dodge and evasion, but now I'm thinking of putting more points into crafting since people keep saying it pays off in the end and my private quarters are filled with materials I can't use.

Yeah, don't feel bad if those guys fucked you up at that stage, they're some of the first enemies packing grenades (no other pre-junkyard enemies have them). They also use a wider range of consumables than other humanoids you've fought before and high damage output. They would be tough even with a rock solid build unless without some heavy cheese.
Don't be discouraged if you just have to drop characters completely at some points, I've scrapped easily a dozen characters with a decent few hours in each of them in the process of getting better at this game.
That being said, I'd suggest the above as stats/feats for a Psi Monk at level 6 (not I've never tried this build before), can't really comment on the skills though so I'd leave that up to you:
Stats:
- You're already hybrid Melee/Psi so you really can't afford to be Str+Dex, low AP cost of attacks will matter more than the damage bonus to your fists and Force Emission from strength, so we're maxing out Dex, increase this every level.
- 5 Int provides enough for Cheap Shots and Expose Weakness, two critical melee feats.
- 7 Will is pretty good and provides enough for many Psi feats.
- 6 Agi is decent for dodging and provides access to sprint which is basically a must for melee.
- 6 Constitution will be nice to have, but if you want you could drop those 3 points into Agility and go full Ninja.
Feats:
- Sprint is mandatory.
- Trigger happy gives you fat init, if you like the perception bonuses you could go for Paranoid instead, if you aren't really bothered about having great init (and you definitely can with this build) maybe drop it entirely and take Sure Step since you seem to plan on using caltrops, or Pack Rathound for more carryweight.
- Tranquility is Psi is probably friendlier to hybrid psi builds than psychosis, but the latter is doable if you feel adventurous.
- Force user is also mandatory, you benefit from every single thing it does.
- Lightning punches further augments the low AP cost of your strikes due to fat dexterity.
From here you could take Grenadier if you choose to level throwing, the aforementioned cheap shots/expose weakness wouldn't be a bad idea either. Though as I've said I've not tried this build before so take what I say with a pinch of salt.

Bought it and got curbstomped immediately because of build wrong-think.
Rebuilt character as Psi-Melee build and quickly became bored because it's so meta you'd be dumb not to use it.
And then I gave up and never played it again.
Glad I got it on a sale, better isometric RPG's out there. That's all I'll say.

I try to make a build without using caltrops but I can't do it, I always have 20 fucking caltrops in my inventory and the light step perk.
It is the most powerful combination imo, the poison ones are amazing because poison stacks so they take more and more damage the longer they walk on the caltrops, on top of reducing movement.
Light step also prevents acid damage which helps a lot in the junkyard. Which to be is more of a build check then depot b as you can cheese it by laying traps in the hallway on the second floor and funneling enemies.

Don't know why I never tried it before but some decent Mutated Dog Leather armor makes Depot A so much easier, a thug near Junkyard dropped one, it makes all the Acid attacks from the mutants pretty trivial (and basically lets you walk on acid with impunity), only real danger is their melee attacks. If you're not so lucky you can also craft it with some Tailoring and Chemistry, though you'll have to whack a few mutant dogs to get the leather first.

Pic related is my Psi build, starting stats were 10 Will, 10 Constitution, 8 Int, after that you just take Will every time you get a new stat point. Note that choosing skill points isn't an exact science, I dumped Temporal Manipulation temporarily to free up skill points, the only skills I'm consistently maxing are Mercantile and the other 3 Psi skills, I just try to keep the others at the point they're useful, and will sometimes put a lot of points into crafting during one level up in order to craft something if I get some nice parts.

Tactical vest utilizes psi beetle carapace too. It has no strength requirement and twice the bullet damage threshold bonus, but no melee protection bonus. Much more useful generally. There are several equipable and consumable items that can be used to increase strength when you really need to put on riot gear, by the way. But if you're gonna drag it around, you might as well just carry bear traps instead.

Anyone else playing on Dominating difficulty? It's pretty tough and forces me to really tacticize every fight, as tanking hits is often not an option, and when it is, it's only because I prepared custom gear for the encounter. Just finished junkyard and so far everything's been relentless - literally every skillpoint I invest needs to be carefully considered, so that I have enough dodge (playing a PSI build), psi skills, and crafting to get through the fights.

>acid dogs
first of all, make sure you got the "sure step" feat that makes you immune to acid pools. It's a must have for fighting in the junkyard. Acid dogs then become a joke, especially if you manage to bottlenect them somewhere. I recommend making leather armour out of their skins, as it negates enough acid damage to make the acid stream attack of the muties irrelevant
>mines
either have the enemy step on them, or use any aoe to trigger them. Might require some trial and error if you don't know where they are
>turrets
go underground from the first old junkyard area, there is a computer terminal in the northeast. You need to get access level 3 (requires a lot of points in hacking) after which you can simply turn all the turrets in the entire junkyard off. If you do not have such a high hacking skill, you just need to avoid them (it's not too hard, there are paths to avoid 100% of turrets and still get to the end). You will miss a bit of loot, but not much, so don't worry about it.
>anything more than two can kill me
Hard to recommend you anything without knowing your build. Generally, though, you want to bottleneck enemies, stun them, slow them etc. PSI builds have a lot of versatility in that area, but even, say, crossbows have plenty of stun bolts, poisons, etc. Grenades also work as a pretty universal crowd control, and if even then you can't win, stock up on traps and lay them down prior to combat. If tanking some hits is unavoidable, get some good armour – muties spit acid, so you want something to protect from that, and everything attacks with melee, so get something for that as well. For example, tailoring mutant dog leather with high density foam padding is a really good option (just used it myself to clear out junkyard on dominating difficulty).

That's partially one of the problems I think you can raise with CRPGs, is an over-reliance on random numbers rather than using it in the position where it's supposed to simulate something that has a fairly reasonable chance of not happening. There shouldn't be a chance to fuck-up rolling a barrel down a hill, but there should be a chance to miss a shot with a crossbow from 200 yards.
You could make the counter argument that the game, and other games like it, are all about mitigating risk and making it so you have to make as few RNG rolls as possible. Which is why traps in this game, and buffs/debuffs in more fantasy themed CRPGs are seen as the absolute go-to rather than straight damage.

Ah, true, forgot the stat requirement on Premeditation.
The sweep attack on spears is decent too but like the other melee weapons I find them kind of boring. Psi, Throwing and Crossbow builds are the most fun IMO. Most others suffer from the fact it's pretty hard to hybrid outside of dexterity builds.

Damn, I do love setting things on fire in this game. The brief turns of panic enemies on fire get makes all the difference. And gassing them is fun too.
I got to the Expedition, and my first impressions are positive. Still, I have a gnawing feeling that Deep Caverns tier bullshit is right around corner, so I won't yet praise anything without reservation. But the gameplay of being part of an expedition seems better implemented than the mcguffin hunt/pointless wandering of the vanilla main story. Enemies have been fun to fight against (the game really doesn't shy from giving enemies all shorts bullshit that the player has access to), the locations are more interesting looking than most vanilla locations, there seems to be different ways to do things (among other things, jumping down a hole to skip dealing with ugly people). And I like the story this far, but I'm a sucker for adventurous archeology in exotic locations, so even standard fare about mysterious lost settlements gets me interested.

Word of warning, Dude's new quest is pretty expansive, you're locked into it for a while once it starts and it has a puzzle you might get stuck on for a while (it's not a hard one though). If you continue after the concoction is assembled you're in for a huge series of hard as fuck fights unless you have stealth. I think (and hope) I'm near the end of them but it starts to get tedious after clearing the second area, this quest is rad though, was caught completely of guard by the scale of it.

With solid block you can kinda ignore Dodge which frees up skill points, the only melee enemies you'll need to watch out for are sledgehammers. Though considering ranged enemies are usually the most dangerous block just isn't that great.

>shield emitters blocking their spines
Honestly, I'm starting to prefer Low/Medium frequency shields for this reason. Crossbow bolts, spines and Low speed projectiles in general are often poisoned/stun you/etc. With a tactical vest or something a shield only needs to take the edge off bullets and your armor can do the rest, snipers are going to oneshot you with 500 damage crits regardless so there's no point try to tank them. Energy weapons seem like the only compelling reason to use HF shields.

I got quite far without triggering hostilities with zero stealth, but then no amount of save-scummy timing was enough and I had to murder everyone. I wish there had been a peaceful way to deal with them. It would have made sense to be able to convince and/or mind rape them to leave me alone, while I looted the place, with high enough Thought Control and Persuasion.
Overall, the quest was a fun way to get some fast travel. The two rifts I found this far in obvious locations are extremely useful.

I was doing quests I missed on my first playthrough, and got to the part where you apparently decide between supporting the Protectorate or Free Drones. While I wasn't particularly keen on siding with the Protectorate, anarchists didn't seem like a good option either. But then one of the Free Drone guy's first reasons, for why the Protectorate was evil, was killing based Biocorp. Which is weird, because I thought Biocorp was a corporate state that gassed people with mutagen for fun and perhaps some scientific data. Because I was roleplaying (which is hard in this game, considering the nuance between options is typically between being a temporally loyal mercenary or a plain murderhobo) a secret biocorpist (which is easy, because there is no Biocorp, so I can be completely arbitrary), I decided to join the deluded anarchists.
Then I found a guy from the fascist (or nazi-commie, or something. Not really sure) place. Apparently they support the fight against the Protectorate, or at least the guy does, but he's no defector. This proves the Protectorate troops truly are zogbots, murdering babies and dying for their blue Monorail money.
Stay tuned for later, when I will explain my theory on how a secret cabal of Crawlers masquerading as humans and Tchort worshipping T*nnelers are behind the monetary system of United Stations.

I'm running a pure tranquility psi build, and it's definitely viable too. I had to cheese a lot at game start, but as I gather more and more psi abilities, I find myself versatile enough to deal with most shit without cheese. Enrage + locus of control is a game changer that can easily deal with groups of enemies, while single enemies can essentially be stunlocked forever if you play your cards right and if they don't have immunities (those are fairly rare so far, thankfully). A lot of people say that Dominating is unbalanced, but I don't think so - it's simply there if you enjoy a challenge. Reminds me of Gothic 2 + DLC difficulty.
>>16753470
>decide between supporting the Protectorate or Free Drones
This conflict is handled so shittily. Neither side seems to really have a set ideology, you don't learn their pros and cons until after you actually commit to one, and the gameworld seems to barely acknowledge the conflict exists at all. I joined protectorate for the sole reason that I found the bunch of misfits forming Free Drones to be annoying as hell.

Been sacrificing points from Thought Control and Temporal Manipulation for crafting and mercantile the last few levels, will probably get them back up later.
Stealth is kind of low but with Ninja Tabi it's usually good enough for me to get the drop on enemies from a distance.
Does Mercentile stop increasing merchant component quality at 100 or should I go higher?
Over the next few lvls I'll probably increase Persuade by maybe 15-20 points, up stealth by ~15 and maybe start working on increasing Temporal Manipulation and Thought Control.
Does this sound like a good idea? Not really finding any crafting components above my skill lvls right now.

I want to get Psycho-temporal Acceleration, mainly for longer duration haste and Hemopsychosis for psi management. Not sure what else to get, Psychostatic Electricity seems like a solid choice, Pyromaniac might be good but it only having a chance to burn enemies (and the game not telling me the %) puts me off.
Been thinking about Last Stand for extra survivability but might be a waste? Might get Pack Rathound to cut down on running back and forth to stash items, got a weight lifters belt for an extra 30 but 160 carry weight is nothing.

Points in Premeditation CD seems invaluable and if I want to have both Future Orientation and Psycho-temporal Acceleration it feels like I need to off-set the action point cost at least a bit.
The rest of my points will probably go into Neural Overclocking.
>Gear
Pic related is my newly crafted gear, wasn't sure about crit chance vs damage on psionic headband but opted for damage in the end. With just Psychosis and Survival Instincts I'm already at 50% crit chance and Psionic Mania lets me guarantee a crit.
Psi beetle vest just seems like an obvious choice, tons of enemies with mechanical damage and/or guns so kevlar seemed good and health is nice with Survival Instincts.
Ninja Tabi are great for movement and extra stealth, dodge/evasion doesn't hurt.
Not pictured is a high frequency shield emiter and doctor's pouch belt.

I want to correct my old stament that was tormenting me for months: skills don't get any synergy boosts if they're already at or above the maximum amount of unmodified skill points possible at your level (lvlx5 + 10). It's still worth maxing out all your combat skills either way.

>It's still worth maxing out all your combat skills either way.
I've gotten through the game fine on only maxing out melee and letting guns get up through synergy.

Jackknife because it effectively raises your lock picking by 10 so I just throw it in my off hand and equip it whenever.

All you have to do is read the reviews of underrail and the expansion on gog.com, and not just the good ones, but ALL of them. Only way you will get the whole big picture of what this game is really like.

Nice gear mate.
>Pyromaniac
From my experience it triggers very often to the point that you can rely on it to fear enemies if you use the flamethrower.

Obviously.
It's a good game, but not very forgiving.

You've said this before, and the majority of the negative reviews either complain about issues that are years old (like no map) or complain the game is too hard.

I only used the unique psi staves from the expansion because they seemed to do something with my thought control skills though nothing game changing.

Where the hell is Cornell after you first speak with him in the sewer? Does he just despawn from the world?
I didn't speak to him before finishing the Missing Merchants quest.

I'm currently roleplaying as a Jew who uses the power of bear traps and Jew magic, with a lot of points put into Mercantile. Far from optimized but so far it works. I can't wait until I hit a wall and have to start all over again.

>Anyone know if Dungeon Rats is any good?
It's full combat, little story - but the writing is amazing, no matter how little there is. Combat is a great challenge, especially on high difficulties. Suffice to say it is a very high testosterone game.

Dungeon Rats of Age of Decadence without the story or whatever, just pure combat. The combat was good in that game, and if you really liked it then you'll enjoy it. Otherwise, no. Age of Decadence is an excellent game, however.
