I’m looking to play a retro ARPG and the Mana series came up. Are the games fun? I’m thinking I’ll start with the SNES titles and end with Legend (though I heard that one was a pretty big departure from the originals).

I was thinking about playing the remakes as well but I’ve heard they were pretty shit and had some tumblr shit in the localization.

Start with the first one. It still holds up.

ca5632  No.16711265

I've played Secret of Mana long ago and the remake recently and TBH, they both suck. I've persisted with SOM because it was "fun with a friend". Remake improves a few things but the difficulty is totally gimped and since it's mostly the same game, it still has all its basic issues. On the other hand Seiken Densetsu 3 is really good (can't wait for the remake - yes I actually said it).

I wanted to write a proper review of SOM remake but I don't know if people would be interested in it enough for me to bother.

Secret of Mana is worth a playthrough. Even better if you can do it with co-op.

I recommend playing this before Seiken Densetsu 3 though, for the sole reason that SD3 is better than SoM in absolutely every way imaginable. Fantastic game, and very much a beloved series of mine.

Legend of Mana is a bit of a departure, but it isn't a lesser game by any stretch. I think the trajectory that you've set up for yourself is a good one. Secret of Evermore is trash though, don't bother.

The onlyt hing trash is your OPINION! SoE is equal or greater to both SD2 and 3. If it had multiplayer out of the box it would poop all over both of them.

For Breath of Fire, 1-4 are all good. 2 has best Nina and best tough girl Katt from your pic. 5 aka Dragon Quarter is an odd one, very much a black sheep but some really like it. Beyond that I think there is also a mobile game, but lets not talk about that.

PSP version has the fishing minigame as an entire alternate mode, but does change some other things for the worse, like recoloring a boss clearly ripping on Ultraman. PS1 version's got fan compiled eboots if you want to take it on the go; for whatever reason no one ever cleared it for an official PS1 eboot despite being a fan favorite.

Also, don't be put off if you find BoF1 a bit bland. Series gets better.

Same here. I played them back to back, and my biggest complaint would be that in SD3 the sprites are huge and complex, so during fighting everything becomes impossible to track properly. It's just a big fucking mess.

There were other things, it's long enough I can't remember.

Recommending Legend of Mana, play it on original hardware or pcsx-emulator. It has so many weird game mechanics that you rarely see, two player support and replayability is off the charts. It's a mix of action rpg and classic jrpg. You have about 10 weapon classes, shit tons of rare drops, spells, allies to recruit, choose your own path story stuff. Beautiful pixel graphics. The designs are overdone on my personal preference, but the absolute beauty of the graphics is awe inspiring. It reminds me of Valkyrie Profile,a game that no one here played because it has a time limit, shit's confusing as fuck at first, and it has very little hand holding.

>>16711418

This. What a master piece. SD3 is so fucking good, it puts most similar games to shame even 20+ years later. Also 3 player co-op on action jrpg on snes, those crazy bastards actually did it.

I also recommend these 3

The first one is a true classic, better than most zeldas, and maybe ys 6.

3 has such a huge huge game to it, lots of going on, lots of characters, playablity, plot, worlds, it's super interesting

and Legend has incredible playability you can go on for a very very very long time before you find out everything and some plot twists and secret dungeons will blow your mind!

Still Ys is better than Seiken and Zelda has so many shitty titles it's the worst of the 3 comparably.

not comparable to the Ys series

has much more in common with the GB Zeldas

think of it as a Zelda-like RPG

>Final Fantasy Adventure (Seiken Densetsu 1) vs Sword of Mana (GBA remake) vs Adventures of Mana

I prefer Sword but there's nothing wrong with the original.

Adventures of Mana is a phone game remake that also appeared on Vita. Other than that I know nothing about it

>Secret of Mana vs remake

haven't played remake, nothing wrong with the original. At least, nothing wrong that romhacks haven't fixed. Lots of quality of life stuff

to note is that the game was initially being developed for the SNES CD before ninty screwed sony. As a result, some portions of the game became noticeably truncated or cut outright

>Seiken Densetsu 3

pick your characters and go to war. 3 empires are making a play at world domination and the endgame depends on who your first character is. I've never seen a nonviable team so go nuts

>Legend of Mana

comfy, thy name is Legend of Mana. Plays a bit like a belt scrolling beat-em-up. Tons of world building, tons of quests, 3 major plotlines that unfold over the course of the game

>Children of Mana

skipable but not exactly terrible.

>Dawn of Mana

terribly underrated. A character action kind of game where your level resets after each chapter. You can pull down pillars, push boulders, and otherwise affect the environment to mess with enemies

bosses can be fucking brutal

>Heroes of Mana

an RTS for DS. I didn't care for it

What I didn't like about secret of mana is the way of leveling spells. Each time you get a lvl 0 spell and you have to spam it on mobs to level it up. It's grindy as hell especially when you get a new spell at the end of the game and you need it at max level to fight the final bosses.

5c2250  No.16726713

>>16725001

To be honest you don't really need to grind them, don't need anything at max level for the final bosses either. It just baits you into doing so, the game's difficulty doesn't warrant it. Dryad is a letdown though, coming so late at level 0 with a 4 MP damage spell..

This was one of the big beefs I had with Evermore. It has the same system of spell leveling, but casting said spells requires consumable reagents, which generally require a fair amount of money and/or effort to acquire to any reasonable extent. And most of the spells were niche at best, and useless at worst.

I know Evermore isn't an actual part of the Mana franchise, but still
