Ever notice some game's messages seem to go over everyone's heads?
I've never heard anyone mention Kirby's planet Robobot message about losing sight of your life's goals in pursuit of profit, or more generally, the methods for achieving those goals.

It's been a while since I played the game but if I remember correctly, Haltmann only went crazy because he was so desperate to get Susie back. And she gets back to their dimension on her own anyway, even working for him at one point somehow without him realizing that she was his daughter. So if anything, the message that you could get from the game is to pursue science and money indiscriminately, because everything will go in your favor anyway and you end up worse off by trying to fix the situation.

Except Haltmann's goal was to be reunited with his daughter, but because he used Star Dream indiscriminately, he lost his memories, thus forgetting all about Susie. His biggest mistake was giving up his daughters memories in an effort to make his company more profitable, forgetting that the point of the profit was perfecting Star Dream and getting his daughter back.

this point is also about 3-3.5ish hours into the game so you can't refund it on steam if you "beat" it the way the developers intended

I just don't get it, really, how is Travis or No More Heroes in general even a mockery of anything. It isn't exactly a deep game or anything, but it's just a fairly enjoyable over the top story.

Did a quick search. It's the "non-binary" flag.
<The nonbinary pride flag was created by 17 year old Kye Rowan in February of 2014 when a call was put out by several members of their community for a flag that could represent nonbinary folk who did not feel that the genderqueer flag represented them. This flag was intended to go alongside Marilyn Roxie's genderqueer flag rather than replace it. [3][4][5]
<The flag consists of four stripes coloured (from top to bottom) yellow, white, purple and black.
<Yellow represents those whose gender exists outside of and without reference to the binary as yellow is often used to distinguish something as its own.
<White represents those who have many or all genders as white is the photological presence of color and/or light.
<The purple stripe represents those who feel their gender is between or a mix of female and male as purple is the mix of traditional boy and girl colors. The purple also could be seen as representing the fluidity and uniqueness of nonbinary people.
<The final black stripe represents those who feel they are without gender, as black is the photological absence of color and/or light.

Art is not therapy, the problem with that is that to see the message of an art piece you need to see it in full, while therapy is done as long as you need it. It's basically like a book telling you to stop reading it, when it's full message will only be seen if read in full.
It is just not a good way of conveying the message.
The message or Spec Ops is also retarded for other reasons, the only thing it does well is shitting on modern Call Of Duty-type FPS but that's besides the point.

>is now commonly discussed for this reason
I only hear people mention it in threads here about games that tried to have a lofty point and sucked. People still discuss all sorts of garbage long after release, being the low water line people compare things to is not a legacy to desire. What they did unquestionably fail at was reaching the actual dude-bro audience they wanted their message to hit, since they all apparently thought it looked dull and never played it.
We're probably the only sort of community who still discusses it and that's because we trawl backlogs looking for new experiences. Hitting someone like us with "Ah, but did you ever consider you needn't play this game?" when we've pirated it years after release solely because we heard people getting angry over it, have little to no attachment to the genre at all, and then post about how gay it is makes it one of the most off-target "messages" I know of.

Isn't that how communism came to be?
And there's quite the difference between being forced to use something and actively profiting off of it. No one's going to blink twice at a person who got divorced saying divorce is bad or a convicted murderer saying killing is wrong, but a billionaire advocating for lighter carbon footprints look a bit hypocritical for zipping around the globe on private jets for conferences that can be done on a Skype call and a company whining about capitalism while asking people to buy their game sounds very disingenuous.

You have a very marketer type belief of success, to discuss and continue talking about something while ignoring how people interpret the subject is something only an advertiser would consider ideal. Since the Devs themselves admit that you are not supposed to spoil the game and play it blind its intended effect is only going to come across a very, very small pool of people upon its first release. The biggest problem with the left is that they claim to support the working class (while being upper middle class themselves) but then demand we flood our countries with scabs from the third world (keeping in mind here that from a working man's perspective a scab is one of the most loathsome people imaginable) who undercut us and devalue our labour, and then when we voice our objection to this they say we should have solidarity with the scabs fucking us over, because at least they get a better life while they destroy everything our grandfathers fought to build up (livable wage, unions, etc). Even though they're showing a complete absence of solidarity by scabbing.

Messages in video games usually fall flat because the devs(despite all the bitching about muh narrative) still treat the story and setting as purely supplementary elements. The end result is that even when there is a message its barely even present to a point where even devs themselves miss it.
For example Gothic. The game world has 3 main deities: Inos(good), Adanos(neutral) and Beliar(bad) but in the first game you dont get to see any of their likenesses. However you get to see a demon called sleeper whose power is almost godlike(he has his own school of magic). You naturally banish him and assume thats the end of him.
But in the second game when you finally get to see the shrine of Beliar yo realize the fucker literally looks like the sleeper and later you learn that most of Sleepers worshipers converted to Beliar. That made me question whether Beliar and Sleeper are not one and the same entity or at least the same kind of entity. And that later lead me to question what does that say about the other gods. Are they even gods or are they just a less malevolent demon? If so what does that say about the whole concept of religion, where you worship and follow something that may not even be worth worshiping?
Problem is that devs themselves probably never even realized what they did there and come the third game nobody even questions this shit or bothers to bring it up. All that subtle and fairly clever build up was tossed into the bin. They probably just like the Sleeper design and just reused for Beliar with no intent to connect the two.
This also why shit like Spec ooof: The line are so "popular". Granted they made zero concessions for the sake of their message(literally force you to shoot everything that moves with no chance to do otherwise) but they beat the player with their message over the head so much that even the thickest of fucks end up getting and thinking its deep. Same shit with Bioshock Infinite or Gone Home.

Ah… This post is poetic for a thread about missed messages.
>But Rufus improved!
No he didn't, that's the whole point. Even after 3 games he kept at his antics basically fucking everything up and being selfish about it, I mean, the third game is the game that has Rufus feeding a giant monster with 3 orphan kids. The whole point of the ending was that Rufus was willing to change at the very end, and the moment he did it costed him his life, and even then, just as he was falling to his death he couldn't help but mock the other faggot that jumped with him.
Nobody realized this, only the people present there, Goal and Cletus, and Cletus is forever punished to be in the shoes of the person he hates the most while Goal knows about Rufus' true sacrifice.
>we know people said our ending was stupid, but what do they know, fuck them what do they know about writing and thanks for the money
Why would you pay for the sequel of a game that ended perfectly well? You only have yourself to blame, plus, a reminder, Daedalic are the ones that forced Poki to work in Doomsday. Daedalic had the rights to the game so they were going to do it with or without Poki, so poki decided to do it to shit on everyone, which is something I respect, and that hopefully kills the franchise which already ended anyway.
Even then, Doomsday is not even a bad game, is as good as the others, and the poetic justice of the game shitting on the faggots who didn't understand the ending of the third game makes it even better.
I personally fucking hate you because you are the reason Doomsday exists in the first place.

Most of that post isn't even about Adventure, it's about the ones on Genesis. You'd see that if you read it, and it explicitly says stuff is from the manuals or from S3&K. Almost all the stuff from Adventure is only slightly expanding on ideas that were already there, such as giving names and actually showing Chaos and Pachacmac, who were only referred to before, but were indeed referred to as early as Sonic 2.
Also, you're not supposed to watch stories in video games, you idiot. You play them. That's probably why you missed it. The storytelling in Sonic Adventure is great. It manages to tell it in interesting ways that make use of the video game medium, such as by having the seven different stories that start and end at different times, and take place at different rates, so you experience them in a variety of non-linear ways, but when you piece it all together, each individual story (which mostly work on their own anyway) adds up to show this wider story that is more closely connected to the earlier games. The way the NPCs all have their own story arcs, which again you experience non-linearly (and don't have to experience at all, since they change even in parts of the game where you're not expected to visit their locations) is also another effective use of the medium and helps to create a world that feels much more alive than it technically is. Use of these artistic elements helped to make up for some technical limitations of this 1998 game.
The image in the post you're quoting also says where all of its material comes from (which you would know if you read it). None of it is side material (which is never canon anyway). It's all from the games themselves, as well as the manuals of older games, since that's where story usually existed in older games.
You can say it's "filling in the blanks," it's obviously autism gone awry with interpretation of symbolism and such, but the actual plot elements cited are not filling in the blanks, only the interpretations of symbolism. The "missed messages" this thread is about. That's the point. If they were explicit, you couldn't miss them. Though I imagine someone like you would miss explicit messages as well, since you clearly never read the post you're replying to, or played the game you're talking about. (Apparently you only "watch" games.)

I think Crash Bandicoot does it fairly effectively. The first game, at least. You progress into more and more advanced technology and civilization, from nice looking jungle, to the aborigine village, to the second island with the decaying ruins of a more advanced civilization, to the third island with the Power Plant and Toxic Waste dump, and then cross the bridge to the extravagant but run down castle with the scary looking lab and such. It's not complex or anything, but it's a logical progression and attention is never called to it. It's nice when devs don't think you're so stupid that they have to spell things out for you.

SA1 is an overarching plot that started from the very first sonic game. The ending was pretty good to close the cycle and SA2 introduced more elements to it.

Its really funny how close a sonic game came to being a modern day epic.
If it wasn't for sonics really unrefined story it could probably have a chance of legitimately being that.
sonic 06 really is a strange thing to look at, the carcass of unborn greatness

I was mostly thinking about how trash Sonic Heroes was, even though I guess the actual concepts were rad and it was just the execution that was the problem. Metal Sonic and Shadow probably had their best character moments in there, but it was all delivered in such a bleh way.
I honestly can't remember Shadow's story in 06 for the life of me, but he always has fun stories.

Shadow the Hedgehog is a Sonic game. It plays very similarly, just with the added gimmick of the guns, which don't actually change the core gameplay that much. If anything, that gimmick changes the gameplay less than the team gimmick from Heroes. The story of Sonic Adventure 2 was also about Shadow, the only part of Heroes that was important to future games was the stuff related to Shadow, and even Sonic Battle is largely about Shadow, or at least Gerald. The games between Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic '06 were basically one big arc about Shadow, even while each game had its own individual plot as well. Just like how the games between Sonic 1 and Sonic Adventure were all about Chaos, or at least the Chaos Emeralds and their backstory, even though individual games had their own individual stories as well. Then after '06 (or arguably after Unleashed) the games weren't allowed to have stories anymore, let alone arcs. Whisps reappear, but it's not like they have plot importance. Eggman is wrong to use them as tools in Colors. In Forces, you literally use them as ammo.
>>16732943
Sonic's story wasn't unrefined. It was that way on purpose. "Fans" had been complaining about the recent Sonic games having stories, claiming that the old games never had stories. They kept saying they wanted something "simple," so Sega was like "fine, you want simple! Here Sonic save princess! Fuck you!" They deliberately made Sonic's story as cliche and simple as possible because that's what "fans" had been screaming for. They made sure Eggman was the bad guy in Sonic's story, and Mephiles was only in Shadow and Silver's stories. They saved the autism for Shadow and Silver's stories. But of course these "fans" are fickle, and exaggerated how dumb Sonic's story was. It was dumb, but it was dumb because that's what they asked for. It wasn't that dumb either way. As much as I'm autistic for the story, it's not the main reason I like the games, and I don't really give much of a shit when I'm actually playing them.
Sonic '06 sucks because it's an alpha prototype, so unfinished that they didn't even have time to dummy out unfinished elements that completely break the game, like Sonic's gems. Really the biggest problem, though, is the load times, which are so bad that they make the Town Stage missions pretty much unbearable, since you have to go through like five load screens just to retry once. If the game was finished, this and a lot of the other problems probably would have been finished. It was an ambitious game and seemed like they were going for fun level designs and movement like we got from Sonic Adventure 2 (though of course here it needed much more refinement), the Town Stages were supposed to have better missions, not ruined by absurd load times, and surely they would have been more lively, like they were in Unleashed (although even that was much simplified). It could have been great. I await that PC remake that one autist is doing. He plans to make it accurately, IIRC, but once he finishes, a bunch of other autists can fix it.

Heroes was supposed to have a simple story. It's not worth writing home about but at least it's not so dumb as to be actively ridiculous, like Forces. It still has more of a story, and a better story, than Colors, Generations, and Lost World.

At that point Shadow's character was completely fleshed out. Actually, it's a situation similar to Zero in the X serie. X remained a stale character because his character was fleshed from the beginning and he barely changed his attitude even in the Zero series, while Zero evolved from badass maverick hunter to savior or reploids and humans alike.

The game only needed a bit more development time, but there were changes that simply were too shitty. For example, glitches and gameplay could have improved the gameplay of the game, since as it was the game looked pretty as hell. But shit like that human princess that seems to be core to the game would have still fucked the game. If something, if it was successful it would have been worse. Imagine the furries.

I'm a massive lorefag, but anyone who actually lets something that minor ruin the game for them, especially if the gameplay is actually good, is an idiot. Story is fun when it's good, but even if it's not, it's not something that can ruin a game unless the devs let it dictate gameplay.
>The twist in generations was stupid but predictable. At least the game is enjoyable.
I heard in the comics or something they said that the Time Eater was actually a remnant of Solaris, the smoke that remained when Sonic blew out the candle at the end. Instead, the Time Eater is a random monster and we are never expected to give a shit. The game is about going back to moments from the old games, but which could have made a cool story, doing Back to the Future II stuff, watching events from other points of view, or simply showing moments from the Genesis games with modern technology. Show the story that was already there, but could only be told in the manual because of technological limitations. But oh wait, I forgot, Sonic never had a story, apparently. So therefore Generations isn't allowed to have a story. But yeah, the game is okay. Too short, and I still prefer Adventure style movement/level design over Modern Sonic.

That's why I like Generations. But the thing is, just why? There's even Amy, why not just go with her? Why not give her an important role? Why even make an stupid love triangle between Elise, Sonic and Amy? Elise on itself was a really shit character. I would have enjoyed the game even with that little detail, but that autistic detail would have prevented me from considering it any good. Sonic and humans don't go together. SPECIALLY if that human is a romantic interest.
>or simply showing moments from the Genesis games with modern technology
That sounds kinda uninteresting. I liked the effort they put in the Generations story, even if the final delivery was shit. Modern sonic working with old sonic is nice.
>I still prefer Adventure style movement/level design over Modern Sonic.
So do I. Admiteddly, I never played a Sonic game since Black Knight, so when they say "modern sonic" I was actually expecting something like Adventures, the whole boost thing was new to me, and even though it was ok, I was let down.

Because "fans" were yelling for a "simple" story so Sega literally had Sonic rescue a princess from Eggman.

No, I mean still do that, but since Sonic is going back to Sky Sanctuary Zone anyway, maybe in the cutscene before that level they show him fighting Knuckles in Hidden Palace, and Classic Eggman stealing the Master Emerald. Or actually have it as a boss fight with Classic Sonic.

Except Sonics story isn't "basic", sonic just acts like a cardboard cutout in it. And as noted, the entire story arc for him is failure; he basically never manages to do anything in his story.
Thats not basic, thats the exact opposite of it; you don't make your hero get saved every story moment and then die in a simple story. Everything but sonic fits, which is ironic but fitting for the game.
It has numerous aspects that any sane person upon analyzing it would change, but 06 never had time for such things; the engine never could get to a usable version so aspects of the final are absolutely broken.
I somehow doubt the story is unscathed, considering they didn't even have the time to make a sonic game feel fast.

Their goal was clearly to just ripoff Mario and have Sonic have to repeatedly save a princess from his arch nemesis. On the other hand, they weren't willing to let go of the style they had had since the beginning, so they tried to have Sonic's "simple" story that the "fans" wanted in the foreground but have it tie into all the classic autism in the background.
>but 06 never had time for such things
This is the key think clear about '06. It's one of the most unfinished games ever, at least on a console. Of course Sega has a history of this, literally cutting Sonic 3 in half because it wasn't finished in time, then selling both halves at full price, but this time it finally came back to bite them.

My point is that simple base does not equal simple story in this case. Its a blatant attempt at a romance tragedy, a poor one but an attempt.
The start of a story does not need to be complex for it to be complex by the end. It might be an attempt at mimicking simplicity but if that was the goal than even from a basic vacuum of only sonic stuff it fails.
Sonic 3 could cut its loses due to scale, and it really seems like it nearly all pulled stuff from 2s unused pile. It also was using a already made engine.
Its a much easier thing to salvage.
>but this time it finally came back to bite them.
Obviously the true first backfire of SEGAs treatment was X-Treme but that had a lot more things go wrong than 06, and wasn't released at all.
Sonic kinda has a history of overshooting.

SU never made me angry because I recognized what it is from the get-go and just never paid attention to it outside of having watched a few episodes by chance on television. But now I'm angry, inconsolably, autistically angry. This is how the freaks making this garbage want to illustrate the union of a man and a woman? I can't help but wonder if it isn't intentional blasphemy against God. Is it not written that a man shall leave his mother and father to be joined with his wife and for the two to become one flesh? That is the language the bible uses to communicate the normative relationship between a man and a woman and how that union creates not just a family in love but results in the production of new, unique, human life. It is a beautiful metaphor for the familial relationship between man, woman and child. It enshrines as a divine mandate the basic building block of a functioning and healthy society Instead they take this same metaphor to advance the subversion of the unique, complimentary distinctions and purposes of the masculine and feminine natures to confuse the way people (children) understand who and what they are. To these wretched and woeful people the union of a man and a woman isn't an expression of romance, of self-sacrifice, mutual service and adoration that partners should rightly have for one another, it isn't passing on of wisdom and the rearing of happy and healthy offspring - what it is is a grand spiritual castration where the man and woman cease to exist, a new unique life is not created but the two partners have themselves eroded away and amalgamated into an indistinct unit. This is satanic, I don't have any other word to describe it.

What I always liked about SR2 was that Jules in hindsight is the hero and you're the villain. I mean you were always the villain, but their betrayal was seen as the most cowardly, evil shit ever, until right before you blow his head off when he's half dead on the ground, and tells you his reason for doing it is that you're a psycho that was destroying the neighborhood he made the saints to protect, with the saints, and you had become worse than the kings or any other gang out there. And in hindsight, he's not really wrong. The boss is a wrecking ball, who's in it for the chaos more than anything else.
