I like to make older male characters, with grey hair and beards, because too many games focus on high school bullshit and I want an old-man wizard simulator that relies on cunning and treachery over youthful agility.
If the game does not have decent beard options it's a deal breaker. Jap games especially seem to have really shitty facial hair options, probably because japs can't grow a decent beard due to their soy diet and lack of test.
In those cases I roll an Ara with the same mindset.

I tend to prefer grizzled sand-blasted veteran types, myself. So, usually some 40s greying soldier type of look.
Unless the game gives me nonhuman options. I tend to prefer the nonhuman stuff, so, it tends to mean I don't have a flat standard at that point. Outside of maybe games which let me play a lizard lady. Then I make an adorable book-loving lizard wizard.

As much as possible. I like to make cute girls so having as many options as possible is ideal. Most games don't allow much freedom sadly. The hair options are typically really lacking. I want really long hair, but I think that just is hard to program or something because most games you can barely get below shoulder length it seems.

Well that's good atleast.
As for me, I really like to make swashbuckler type characters. Generally the look is based off of Westley from Princess Bride but with something different each time, like giving them a ponytail or changing the hair color.
Usually I dislike extremely detailed sliders, as getting something really unique out of them takes way too much experimentation and I end up with something far more generic than usual. Dragon's Dogma's system is about the max before it becomes too much.

As much as I'd love a girl who does 2000 sit ups a day, that seems to be the entirety of her routine. The dev needs to make it so the muscle slider also alters the definition of her arms and legs, but if they pull it off, they'll officially dethrone PSO2 as the best character creator for making fit girls. Maybe then they could also go the extra mile and make a decent game instead of just another ASSFAGGOTS while they're at it.

I usually decide based on the kind of run I'm going to do, if being an evil bastard is possible I'll make them look all resting bitch face-pissy and/or obviously a wrong-un right from the start so everyone who auto-trusts him is a fucking dolt and it's not like his being an evil shit wasn't telegraphed. Conversely if I'm being all selfless and noble and shit I'll make them 'out of place' beautiful if the thing allows it, or at least an uncommon look that makes them stand out. I do have a couple of archetypes that have held over several games:
A bald or whatever the most ludicrous hairstyle is for a male, I try to make him an angry looking fuck but not OTT ebul with two extreme features, ideally something weird/wrong with the eyes and a massive chin, generally try to make him lipless too.
For a female the classic redhead with tiddys, blonde loli or rarely the mad old bitch

Reminds me of when a friend of mine did an LP of ME: Andromeda with a female character that looked like she was hit with an ugly stick and then attacked in the face by a hot waffle iron. He also made her consistently pick the dumbest option because there really weren't any "evil" options.

I make a cute girl, preferably a loli, whenever possible. If the game only lets me play as a guy I'll make him look as ridiculous as I can. If the game lets me play a girl but I can't make her look cute, it's probably a shit game not worth playing.
Lots of face sliders are nice to have, but even with lots of control the game needs good presets to start from. Floundering around in the character creator for twenty minutes trying to get a face that doesn't suck isn't fun. It's much better if I can start with a face that looks close to what I want and just make little tweaks to it. Body sliders are a mixed bag. Being able to adjust height is almost always a positive addition, but other adjustments often end up looking distorted at the extreme ends. The manga/ln is good, but its not for everyone. While Berserk is a very well done dark fantasy action story, its not very comparable to Goblin Slayer, which is much more of a traditional dnd fantasy story with dark and action elements thrown in. Its not like some ubermensch's crazy fight against destiny with nonstop action and dark shit that barely stops from going too edgy. Goblin Slayer is a very different story, its doesn't have a central theme like Berserk, its not centered around action/dark stuff, it has extreme variation in themes, its much more grounded in its setting/world, and it has an almost completely different kind of MC.

I like how in dark souls 1 it tried to make you pic normal skin colors by having the sliders for the individual colors move together but that you could get around it by repeatedly moving them backwards and forwards so they would eventually separate.
