<Shill synopsis:
>Best modern diablo-like game currently on the market
>Same developers as Titan Quest
>Self-published and not run by cucks
>2 major expansions deep with new minor content updates around the corner
<Beginner tips:
>Play on Veteran
>You can add a hotkey to loot items near you and one to activate things like chests
>Golden triangle in bottom right of UI increases minimap size
>Lootfilter is accessed by clicking the ring in bottom left
>Don't neglect resistances, getting reputation with factions grants access to resistance boosting gear augments
>Defensive ability is just as - if not more important than resistances for increasing survivability. Hover over it to see crit/hit chance of last enemy you were hit by
>At the start, focus points into a single damaging skill and don't spread yourself too thin
>You can respec everything besides a mastery that has had points put into it (with GD Stash you can undo mastery selection as well)
<Items:
>Never sell blue and purple items, use dynamite to dismantle them if you have duplicates
>You unlock an option at the inventor to turn a set piece into either a piece of the same set or a completely random one, save duplicate set items for this
>Don't waste components for crafting things other than Relics and better components whilst levelling, but feel free to enhance your gear with components as you can recover them
>Rare (green) items can be blessed by RNG making some viable even for endgame builds
>Most unique bosses may drop gear not found anywhere else, ranges from rare, epic to legendary
>Never sell components
<Damage types:
>There are 15 types of damage and 10 types of resistances
>Physical, Fire, Lightning, Cold, Acid and Vitality have separate damage over time effects which needs to bypass the same resistance type but scales with a different stat
>Those being: Internal Trauma, Burn, Electrocute, Frostburn, Poison and Vitality Decay
>Pierce, Bleed, Chaos and Aether have no damage over time variants (though bleed is technically always a DoT effect)
>Flat elemental damage adds 1/3 of each element, i.e 9 elemental damage = 3 fire, 3 cold, 3 lightning
>All other cases mentioning 'elemental' including flat elemental resistance reduction adds the full value to all 3
<Notable nonintrusive mods & resources:
>Grim Internals adds a lot of options such as hovering names and health bars to enemies, autolooting of items and DPS meter amongst other things
https://forums.crateentertainment.com/t/tool-grim-internals/38773
>GD Stash adds an infinite stash through a java program, also enables save editing
https://forums.crateentertainment.com/t/tool-gd-stash/29036
>Grimtools is a complete database showing all items, locations, enemy stats/skills and more. Also has a skill tree planner

ARPGs are designed to be gear treadmills from start to finish though. Why would you bother to play games for the plot?
Realistically, there's a few different playstyles, melee, ranged, caster, summon, and about 6-8 major damage types and like 4 secondary damage types, plus a number of damage/t variants. So you have a fair variety on how you build your character, depending on how autistic you are

Oh I had forgotten about that.
Well, monster groups are still generated randomly, and certain objects like bounty targets, chests, and bosses are randomized as well. So you can still memorize different routes and locations, but they'll vary game-to-game. In addition, even though you have a large map, different passages will be randomized as well, so you might be able to snake through a cavern one way, but then have to take a different route next game. It works, even though the map is static.

Also, asking again in case anyone knows:
What flags a town as being the one you spawn in? I've tried using riftgates, interacting with merchants, seemingly everything, but I'll always seem to respawn in Devil's Crossing. Then, I'll visit some other random town, buy some shit, and then it will be my active town, and I can never figure out how to change it to the one I want

Skill and item conversions are different. Same type conversions will not work (not that it's possible to have 2 skill type conversions). But you can have skill turn the type into something, and then the gear turn something into something else. That's how I envisioned it working.
Also rate my faggotry please:

Planned as a cold in yo face weapon damage caster relying on empowered veil of shadow turning enemies into meek faggots, then blasting them with cold damage. Doesn't actually work properly until around 75 when you get the no-CD attack, although honestly once you get the hourglass it should work just fine and frankly until 75 you can manage the cooldowns without issues, passive damage from spectral wrath and night's chill kills everything whose name is yellow or white.
Good overall defensive stats, considering 32/32 masteries, barely got capped resistances. Not enough health, but good panic buttons and passives in both classes to facilitate survival.

What's the problem? DA scaling is linear, and dodge chance has increasing returns. Only a problem if you are lacking points very hard.

Point taken, one point should be enough.

Pets are immensely overpowered in the early game. Once you start getting into elite and beyond you have to start worrying about their resistances some. Particularly poison and aether tends to have ground effects that slaughter pets. Skeletons have so little health it's probably not as worth it to stack resistances for them.

Pet builds are fun. I like going Necromancer\Occultist and let my pets do the killing while I just give healing and support to them, the goddamn Pox is fucking hilarious and I can't wait for Ravenous Earth to start exploding corpses.
I also have a question regarding Dual Wield vs Two Handed.
I was making an Inquisitor\Demolition character to go full akimbo style. However, some of the skill augments I've seen require Two Handed and that got me trying and thinking about the whole build.
I'd guess that Dual Wield would be a better option for the extra procs that Inquisitor gets in some of those attacks and maybe Fire Strike, but I'm not aware of how much better this is.
Do I get a chance to activate those things for every attack and thus double the chances with Dual Wield, each gun attack able to proc it?
Does Fire Strike apply to both weapon attacks and thus ends up giving me double the extra damage? What about the times where I fire both guns at the same time?
I've already searched a bit and it seems that DW is the way to go for procs while 2H is best for raw damage, but I'm not sure exactly how good it is for that.

You can only convert damage once, regardless of if it is a skill or item. The conversion is always raw damage type (without %bonuses) converted to first order damage type which then receives the appropriate %bonus for that damage type.

To clear up the explanation a little: consider the Cadence skill.
Cadence has a modifier that adds 42 flat elemental damage and converts all physical damage from the skill into elemental damage. Say you wanted to run an elemental damage to chaos damage conversion and you have this on your gear at a 100% elemental damage to chaos damage conversion.
The first order conversion is the skill modifier, which excludes the gear conversion of acting on the now elemental damage that Cadence deals. This results in Cadence dealing primarily elemental damage, as the only elemental that would be converted would be the flat elemental damage from the modifier and whatever elemental damage existed on the weapon.
The game, by design, only allows single-step damage conversion. It does not penalize you for over-conversion on skills however, notably fire-conversion Forcewave allows you to convert physical to fire at 200% with the right selection of gear.

Good shit. Cooldowns do matter though, but you got so many of them you hardly notice (I got bone harvest, shadow strike, ring of steel and sacred strike, and you can just walk around, and everything just suicides on night's chill, spectral wrath and ice surge from glacier). 5k crits on level 25, fuck yeah.

I don't remember but the chests are pretty standard since the reason they're there is to drop FG materials and blueprints. You get something like 90% of the max reward by going three shards past a waypoint (ie start at 40, end at 42-4) so you can get stuff fairly rapidly once you've found a comfortable point.

I am just using it as a broad reference to damage type conversion. Even still, the modifier is a poor choice for single element damage because "Elemental" damage is an even split: 60 elemental damage is 20 fire/lightning/cold damage. So you are still better off searching for a physical to element conversion instead of using the modifier. All element damage is pretty niche for most combo builds.

Yeah, non-caster. I always find myself making caster builds in ARPGs because damage from them is based on dumping points into a skill, and you usually get a stronger immediate return, not to mention projectiles etc give a lot more AOE and stuff. Whereas stuff like Cadence or charge up / default weapon replacers seem to just improve damage on one target.
But if you're in melee, you're going to get bullied a lot, so you have to build tanky too, and if you fall behind on weapon itemization, your damage is shit too, etc etc.

There's a ton of really good melee AoE in GD though, Spin if you have FG is really good and it's based on weapon damage. Blade Burst for Nightblades is good, primal strike for Shaman is good, Storm Spread is good AoE for inquisitor if you use guns, Bone Harvest for necro, lots of decent AoE options for weapon people.

Weapon builds are obviously more reliant on your weapon to deal damage which is both a curse and a blessing. Getting good rolls on a weapon or just a generally very strong weapon fit for your build whilst lvling can lead to a massive boost in damage whilst casters don't get as much of a benefit even from a BiS weapon.
>Whereas stuff like Cadence or charge up / default weapon replacers seem to just improve damage on one target
Don't forget that you're also getting attack procs both from passive skills like Storm Burst and that you can also tie multiple proc devotions to a single attack by attaching them to said passives, which caster builds can not.
>But if you're in melee, you're going to get bullied a lot, so you have to build tanky too
True but later in the game pretty much everyone has to get decently tanky and melee builds tend to have an easier time (melee classes like Soldier and Oathkeeper have very good health & physique gains + strong defensive skills).

My bad, meant Storm Spread, the Inquisitor gun proc passive.
But yeah your AoE potential massively increases as you get more passives, especially when you consider that the AoE (even if small) increases the chance to proc. If you hit 4 enemies with Cadence and have a single 25% chance to proc skill, it's almost guaranteed to proc.
% to activate on hit passives such as Storm Spread or Soldier's Zolhan's Technique are also weighted against a table of 100. Meaning that when you reach 100% or more in weapon proc chance (say you have 4 different 25% ones) normal 'non-proc' attacks are completely taken off the table and it's not just a statistical probability to proc something, it's guaranteed.
I think it looks something like this:
<2x 25% chance to proc
>Game rolls 1/2 if proc or regular attack
>Lands on proc, now rolls 1/2 to decide which one (a single attack can only proc one at a time)
<4x 25% chance to proc
>regular attack has been completely taken off the table, go directly to 1/4 roll to decide which passive activates
At least that's how I understand the system working.
In short, weapon based skills tend to start with lower AoE capabilities but have high potential to evolve, spells tend to be more static and if they have an AoE component they'll have it at the start (or through a direct skill upgrade) but will not improve much after that.

>(a single attack can only proc one at a time)
Oh and obviously this only applies to passives from the skill tree.
Passives from the skill tree themselves can proc both constellation and item 'on-hit effects' and if a skill (say, Cadence) decides to proc Zolhan's Technique but you also have Bat tied to Cadence, both can proc at the same time. But Zolhan's Technique and Markovian Advantage could not.
The disadvantage of tying a constellation proc to a skill tree passive proc is that you severely dilute its proc chance. 25% chance to hit on Zolhan's Technique means average proc every 4 hits. Tie a 25% chance devotion to that and you need to on average proc Zolhan's Technique 4 times to proc the devotion, meaning it will proc every ~16th hit.

On the topic of default attack replacers, Cadence works best when it isn't overloaded with WPS skills. It's better to have 3 WPS skills (from skill tree) instead of less or more as the cadence skill takes up a slot for WPS when it goes off every 3rd attack. % chance on attack skills from gear can trigger off of any damage attack if it fits the skill triggering requirements.
Savagery, fire strike, and righteous fervor don't replace a slot in the WPS so you can use more than 3 WPS skills for those if you wanted to. People playing a blademaster should be careful to only select 3 WPS skills when using cadence as their main attack. I like markovian's advantage, belgothian's shears, and execution for a physical damage blademaster.

Huh, didn't know that.
>I like markovian's advantage
Markovian Advantage has a longer animation than a regular attack and other chance on hit procs which often results in lower dps, more noticeable the higher attack speed you have.

Shouldn't it be 2 WPS skills? Because then it'd be A, then B, then Cadence? Or am I misunderstanding something

The Cadence string works by X-X-C-X-X-C, where X is your default autoattack and C is a cadence hit. WPS can only trigger on the X hits and will not trigger on a C hit (like how WPS will not trigger on a 0s cooldown skill like Primal Strike)
Maybe what >>16684633 was trying to say was to not invest too many points into WPS when using Cadence because of the cadence hit not being able to trigger WPS.

So what's a quick and dirty Blademaster / Cadence build look like?
I just hit 30 and I feel very fucking squishy. My points are pretty much only in Soldier right now, and I can't find any weapon pair that comes close to 2h dps

Finally grabbed this during the summer sale, enjoying it so far. Didn't even reach lv40 with any character yet, but already made 3 alts. Theorycrafting is the funnest part.
So far I got a EoR Warlord (Sword and Board, but might go 2H eventually, haven't decided yet), DW Cold Infiltrator, shield throwing Acid Sentinel and a Lightning caster Vindicator.
Not sure about that last one yet, I feel like I'm just constantly spamming wind devil.

Was thinking of doing a dual wield gun Soldier/Inquisitor, and focusing on fast gun attacks.
Cadence says it does 420% weapon damage; if I get the mutator, how does that interact with the phys->elem conversion? It does 4x my weapon damage, then converts it to elemental?

It converts all physical damage done by the cadence proc into elemental damage. The specific sets that take advantage of soldier/inquisitor most likely their own conversions. That modifier is not recommended to be taken unless you really know what you are doing and how the game systems work.

would like to be able to at least throw faster. whether its the nade velocity or the player throwing anything helps.

Grimtools has now updated. It looks like they just multiplied the ingredients by the number of partials you had to craft to get a whole component.

The only appeal I could see of PoE over GD is if you really love the ladder rushes, resets and world chat.
In my opinion GD does everything else better and I don't care much for the online features in PoE.
Though an ingame chat might be fun, even if it would most likely be cancerous as fuck. The devs could do something like that rogue-like ToME where they just incorporate an IRC chat into the game in order to avoid always online or big server costs.

I kinda like PoE's map system. I mean it's grindy but at least it gives you the illusion of something to do.
Crucible and SR just feel like generic wave combat, otherwise you can just farm the same static campaign maps endlessly

The fight wouldn't be so bad if it weren't so autisitically bullet hell-ish, the movement in these games are so awkward so why they thought that would be a good idea is beyond me. I have yet to actually find a boss in this game that I can think is actually fun. They're all just boring sponges.
