The new spinning is animation manipulation, since this game introduces an alternate directional block players will move their body in ways that disguises their angle of attack or even if they're attacking at all. It's good. The ballerina spinning is pretty much gone, since there's a mechanic called glancing blows which means that attacks only do 5 damage if you hit someone with the very start or very end of an attack. In other words, spinning is still possible but tends to be far more hassle than it's worth.

The closest thing Mordhau has to that are drags and accels, i.e. moving the camera mid-attack to respectively delay or accelerate your swing, but it's not even remotely comparable to Chivalry's spinning and you can safely ignore anyone who says it is. Countering drags & accels in Mordhau involves slightly changing the timing of your parry/chamber and that's it, it's an intentional mechanic. Countering the spinning in Chivalry meant pre-emptively anticipating unreactable hitboxes coming out in the first few frames of an animation, and was something that Torn Banner admitted they didn't know how to fix.

Morphing and chambering are also solid additions which give the combat a lot of depth that Chivalry didn't have.

The sole thing Chivalry has over Mordhau is the creativity of its objectives and some map design, but there's wiggle room for both of those to improve in Mordhau since (again, unlike Chivalry) its devs are actually committed to supporting it post-launch. They've already turned Taiga from the least balanced map into arguably the most balanced and also unfortunately made Crossroads somehow less balanced than before, but still. In terms of both combat and customisation, Mordhau is leagues better.

I think chambering was a great addition as it actually gives a reliable counter to feints rather than making it purely guesswork but then they completely undid that by adding in morphs which you can't counter with chambers because they're too quick but will get around blocks because it changes the initial timing of one swing by switching to another so it reintroduces the pure guesswork that I fucking hated about feints in chivalry.

Why on earth they thought morphs were a good idea is beyond me, its the only thing with no reliable counter in an otherwise perfectly balanced combat system.

Watch this for an example of chambering. At 4:42, this is a chamber. Left man begins the bind (bind is when the blades touch, and make that chhh sound), and continues with the thrust. His bind-thrust is a defense against enemy's blade. And at 6:00, on the left he does a chamber again, which is a defense from a thrust. His chamber is a counter attack thrust.

And to correct you, chambering is a reliable counter to all attacks in Mordhau. It is just as easy to chamber a morph, a single hit, and a feint. If you cannot chamber these, you are attacking too early and falling for his feint/morphs. Wait until the enemy forward thrusts or strikes, at this point he cannot morph any longer, and he cannot feint. This is when you attack to chamber. Do it when the enemy is done winding up.

I was talking about chambering and not clashing, you can't chamber a morph because if you start a stab to chamber their stab and they morph it into a slash then that slash will hit you before your stab hits them so it can't counter morphs in the same way it counters feints, in fact morphing actively counters chambering.

My problem is that its like having a rock paper scissors game in which one thing has no counter, if you attack then blocking counters it, if you feint then that counters block, if you chamber then that counters feints, if you morph then that counters chambers, but nothing counters morphing so you just have to rely on guessing right that they'll morph and block it but if you're wrong you'll get hit or guess that they don't morph and if you're wrong you'll get hit.

I hate any aspect of a reaction based game like this coming down to pure guesswork and most people do which is why almost nobody feinted in chivalry and people who did were looked down on because it just turns an otherwise skill based game into a game of guess the feint.

It isn't much of a genre honestly. Started with, what, Dark Messiah? Elder Scrolls if you're feeling generous. Then theres Chivalry and now Mordhau. I'd suggest playing Die by the Sword if you haven't, it's a very unique action game with maximum early 3D aesthetics and surprisingly good hit detection. The problem is that studying the martial arts of ancient fighting is kind of hard from a modern, straightforward standpoint. People think armor was able to be sliced through by bastard swords, or claymores even, not considering that you have a big mace attached to the back end of your blade perfect for making a big dent in a piece of plate. They don't consider half swording because they have no idea the weight of a blade and how it would function if they were going against someone else wearing armor; this is mostly due to RPGs, which depict your health as a bar that diminishes when you get struct, regardless of where you were hit, what kind of attack it was, if it cleaved armor or knocked your arm, etc. It's just damage that is modified by armor, which is basically just extra skin for you. Thrusting swords would be great for plated foes, since you can jab into the plate, create dimples in the armor, and otherwise break apart chain or pierce through a thickly stuffed gambison. Everyone just sees armor and thinks, "Well if I just swing really hard I could cut off his limbs," also not taking into account that metal on metal breaks the martial art rule of soft for hard, hard for soft.

I don't have a problem chambering someone who actively morphs all the time. You are seriously starting the chamber too early. You should be using a quick weapon, such as an estoc, even pollaxes and halberds work.

If you fail a chamber timing-wise you can still right click out of most situations. Or attack(realizing it will fail) then feint to reset then right click block. You should duel with me some time, we can get you to chamber good. You need a quick refreshing monitor and 1khz mouse probably.

Griefers are starting to pop up in the community and sometimes they're organized. Many of them work together to trap teammates in spawn and work hard to shift blame to other players in chat, initiating votekicks nonstop.

DBTS was a cool game, the only problem is being able to turn the camera and use your weapon at the same time. You could use lock on targeting, but it will be a hard game to balance out in terms of controls regardless. What about fighting multiple enemies? The latter is a serious flaw and the former is a major annoyance that everyone will have to get used to with huge potential for balance issues.
