FF9's cartoony art style has helped its ingame models and CGI cutscenes age better than 7 or 8 did. It doesn't look as "outdated" as those two, which tried going for more realistic proportions.
Another plus of FF9 is its battle system. If you're a fan of earlier FFs like 6 and below, you'll feel right at home. It's the last classic FF game that Squeenix has ever made.

>it seems like the psx FF games can be pretty divisive
FF9 and FF7 may have their defensive fanbases, but that's only because both of them were such good rpgs. Either of them are worthy of being called the "Best Final Fantasy game on PS1", depending on who you ask. However, be careful. Saying that you like FF8 over either of them will get you crucified though. Nobody actually liked the gimmicky draw system in 8. And its bad story is easily the worst of the three.
So if you're gonna start playing FF9, you're in luck. Everything about it has held up extremely well.

I love this game, even with it's loading times. That being said, PS4 appears to be the quickest loading version of FF9, and I fully understand if the long load times for every battle annoy people too much to enjoy the game. It's a good FF, but not a great FF. FF5/6/7 is probably FF at it's peak.
It's easily one of the prettiest games on the PSX, and the mechanics of the game are a bit different than most RPGs. You don't want to sell your old gear the second you get something new, you might not even want to put the new stuff on right away. You can shift your earned abilities anytime between battles without any penalty, allowing you to customize each person in your party for whatever you know or think you might be up against. A decent sized chunk of the writing is inside optional in-game cutscenes you don't need to watch if you are replaying or just don't care about them. There's also a few parts in the game where you can power-level your team into monsters before you even reach the last disc. Fantastic FMV videos, especially the opening and ending videos.
Unfortunately, the game is marred with a lot of crap. Say goodbye to the fun minigames(with the exception of the breeding) of FF7 and say hello to Chocobo Hot and Cold. If you wanna access everywhere in the game and fight the hardest hidden boss, you'll need to play the holy fuck out of that shit minigame to get all the pieces needed. Or how about that card game? You'll either dominate or get raped, depending on if you have better cards or not. Your prize if you win? MORE CARDS. But hey, those are optional shitty minigames, unlike the Red Light Green Light bullshit on disc 3 you are forced to complete to advance(with the exception of the one time you are forced to play the card game to advance). Character development and plot pacing are all over the goddamn place. Amarant is practically non-existent, Freya's plot seems to stop without warning, and the writers obviously enjoyed bouncing from one plot thread to another without any resolution until later and possibly off-screen. The end boss is nonsense bullshit.
Most of that gets overshadowed by complaints about the long loading times for every battle, and the long average battle length due to the longer attack animations. 12 seconds is the PS4's loading time from blur beginning to being able to move. Every other platform is slower than that. Still love it.

I recently just played and beat the game for the first time last week. If you don't mind rough visuals I recommend emulating the PS1 version with medafen. Look up how to make a playlist with the 4 discs before hand to save you some work when you reach the end of disc one.
>What's wrong with the remaster? I'm aware it's not actually faster or even much better looking, but any actual problems with content or anything?
From what I saw when looking this up it's mainly things being removed like control remapping and analog movement. I think the PS1 version is the only one with full analog directional movement. The ports do have really good character models though. I terms of "how it aged" it's a turn based combat game with 3d movement in small areas, so there isn't much that feels like it would be bad as time goes on. If you play the PC port, make sure to get the mod that fixes the backgrounds and other things. Medafen also has a turbo feature so if you get tired of the slow transition screens or how long it takes to go into trance the most undewhelming, but good system in the game just use that. It's worth playing, and only takes around 50 hours blind for the first time. Don't be a faggot who refuses to play a game because of it's release date.

4-9 are generally considered the best in the series but like >>16668269 said the one you'll like the most depends on your personal preferences.
4 is a straight forward fantasy game with just enough little twists to keep it interesting. It's probably the quintessential FF game.
5 has a more lighthearted story and a very fun class system.
6 has more of a steampunk setting and a very dramatic story and each character in the game has their own very unique skills and abilities.
7 has a cyberpunk setting and is also very dramatic. The skills your characters have is determined by the magic rocks, called "materia", that you equip them with. It also has quite a bit more content than the previous games.
8 is a huge clusterfuck. The story is a barely coherent soap opera full of the teenage angst that was popular in the 90s and I'm not even sure how to describe it's setting. The gameplay is also very strange. You get magic by stealing individual spells from enemies. As in, if you steal 1 fire from an enemy, you will be able to cast fire one time with that spell. There's a ton of other shit with the gameplay that would take a massive wall of text to explain. I'm probably not making it sound too appealing but it can be if you like figuring out ways to break games and have a soft spot for cheesy teenage drama. It also has a very fun card mini game.
9 returns to a more traditional fantasy setting and doesn't take itself quite as seriously as 6, 7, and 8. It's sort of like a greatest hits album in that it takes the best(in theory at least) elements of all proceeding games and mixes them all together. The combat is slower than previous entries but apparently there's a patch that fixes that >>16666275. It's also the favorite game of the series' creator.

>Actually, on this topic, what are the must plays in the FF series and which versions should you go for? Seems like each game has five different ports and remakes.
Depends on what you want. If you want just RPG gameplay, 5, 1, and 3 to a lesser extent offer you a great deal of party customization, and are open-ended enough that you can beat the game with just about any party. If you are looking for plot and characters, 6, 7, and 9 have rich worlds to explore. If you want to try something a bit more experimental like SaGa, 2 and 8. 4 is decent in the vein of 6, 7, and 9, but it's kinda bare-bones and simple compared to them.
The best versions of the first two NES FF games are the Wonderswan Color versions, which got ported to the PSP/PSVita. As for FF3, you can choose between the original NES version translated, or the DS remake with the crappy 3D graphics. Both have pluses and minuses. For FF4, original JP SNES or EasyType JP SNES with a translation patch. US version is way easier, censored, and has more bugs, and every version past that has added in bugs or censorship. FF5, original JP SNES with translation patch. The english releases of FF5 all suck for different reasons. FF6, SNES with a general bugfix patch is recommended. Maybe a re-translation if you don't like Woolsey or whatever his name was. All PSX FF games are recommended you play on PS4 due to the shortest possible loading times.
Don't know shit about FF games past the PSX era.

Pretty sure there's no legitimate reason whatsoever to use those for any game, they're basically little more than collections of gameshark cheats in ips format, aren't they? That's what I remember thinking when I read the descriptions and readmes for them anyway. There would be a point if they actually were easy mode patches that had effort put in to balance the games and fix any convoluted instructions so you know where to go next, but instead they just make conspicuous signs/NPCs that tell you exactly where to go and make it so that you start with the best gear in the game and have crazy stats such that you may as well be playing a walking simulator.

said, Easytype isn't a romhack, it's an official release since the original JP release was considered excessively hard. The US release and Easytype are almost identical, except the US release has more censorship.
The main differences between the original and Easytype/US is all the status restoration items got replaced with remedy(which is no longer a rare item), all "attack spell items" were removed outright, and the majority of invisible passages were made visible. Oh, and characters unique abilities were mostly removed, and the three defensive spells are gone. And spell times were cut in half.
I'd personally recommend the JP original, but even Easytype would be superior to the US release since it doesn't have the censorship.

It has a nice Star Wars like story and customizing the AI on your party members can be a fun time waster. The world is also pretty fun to explore with stuff to do in it. But yeah, it does sort of play like an offline mmo.
Fran boosts it up by a whole point in my book.

Not at all anything made during and after the 80s is perfectly playable. Its before then that games start to show there age.

Why? There's nothing special at all about the original game, it's just a mess of a project made by a studio that was used to doing action games. Furthermore, why even suggest the Japanese version? There's no hidden lore or deep philosophical anecdotes in that, it's the same flimsy premise void of characterization as in the burgerland version. Why are you such a faggot and why are you championing a piece of shit?

It's far and away the slowest and most linear of the PSX games, and that's saying a lot. Pretty much the only things it has going for it are pretty graphics and rat tits.

If I recall the art style was a more cutesy less realistic compared to VIII and perhaps looks alright. Saga Frontier has aged better than any other RPG I've found and is a great game as well.

Tbf ffvii (which is my favourite game) has some retarded shit in it like:
>massive, (most of) globe-spanning, hi-tech mega corporation
>needs some random mechanic guy to make them airships
>in spite of having airships and helicopters (and submarines), needs to borrow said random mechanic's bi-plane (which he built in his garage) to get (presumably) the president and his whole entourage of spies to a continent which is just north of their home (but that they've never explored for some reason)

Yeah I just replayed that recently and I thought that was weird that they wanted to use the Tiny Bronco. They already had the Highwind.

Yeah it makes absolutely no sense. There are a lot of things about the state of technology that make no sense in that game tbh. Like it's dieselpunk, but there are hi-tech computers in some areas, but then 1980's style computers elsewhere (in places also owned by shinra). And the compilation fucks things up further (holograms and shit like that - but still no passenger jets).

The retarded shit in FF7 makes you wonder if the writers even thought about the plot they were writing. I enjoy the game, but goddamn.
>big massive mega-corp with nearly unlimited people and power
>they know for a fact where some girl lives that they want to get their hands on
>it's heavily implied they have tried multiple times to get her and failed, even with their best agents
>within the city they own and have full control over
>when it's shown she's far from athletic
>most of the world is shown to be poor, tribal, or moderately wealthy at best except Midgar and other Shinra connected towns
>amusement park out in the middle of nowhere with no Shinra ties has VR games with technology not seen anywhere else
>the reveal with cloud means tifa knew the whole time and didn't say anything for….no apparent reason?
>letting the entire crew go off on a dangerous adventure without actually knowing what was going on
>absolutely no one has any issue with this afterwards, not even cloud who you think would REALLY WANT TO KNOW
>cait sith just doesn't make fucking sense any way you slice it
>it was obviously controlled by reeve, but he got arrested by the other higher ups
>yet cait sith still remains the exact same, and keeps on communicating

Also Tifa never told Cloud the truth because she was afraid it would break him.
dad08a No.16678085

This. Remember that the starting point of the game is Tifa finding a fucked Cloud lying on the streets who freaks out before telling her how nice it is to see her again and telling her a false version of events while clearly not acting right.
Thatg's why she's so adamant about Cloud staying with Avalanche where she can keep an eye on him. She knows he's unstable somehow and doesn't want to cause him to flip out or worse by calling out the fantasy he made up.

I get that, but once they embarked deep into it, you think she would have at least considered telling him, if not all her teammates she was putting into danger by having someone obviously mental lead the way. She had to have known that chasing after Sephiroth they would eventually come across the truth anyways. I can fully understand her remaining silent at first, but by Kalm she really should have spoke up. She even almost does, then holds back.
What doesn't make sense to me is no one else in the party has any problems with this after it all comes out. Instead Cloud is apologizing for something he was aware of but not aware of(first he was confused between his own memories and zack's stories due to mako poisoning, then suddenly it was just a story he made up because he was ashamed he wasn't SOLDIER) and no one even comments on Tifa not telling anyone.

1. Tseng, the leader of Shinra's FBI, very clearly has the hots for Aerith, so odds are good he let her get away. She lives in the slums, where the regular police force is probably too pussy to go, and the one attempt we see fail is because she and Cloud donkey kong the flunkies, and then she gets away by running across the rooftops, with Reno not bothering to pursue. Either Shinra didn't try hard enough before or the Turks are msolty incompetent.
2. Gold Saucer was built by DIO, a burly millionaire who banged out an amusement park for shits and giggles, probably meant to mirror Las Vegas since it's built in a desert or maybe Disneyworld having been built in a god damn swamp. As far as technology goes, i'd point out that some outlying farmhouses didn't even have indoor toilets up to the 1950s, so tech isn't always evenly distributed, especially for the poor-ass retarded miners living in a refugee camp.
3. Plot purposes but also Tifa totes wants that Cloud cock and doesn't gainsay him for fear of him fucking off. As far as guiding people into danger, she probably thought Negro Gunarm and Talking Firecat could handle anything that cropped up to say nothing of her boytoy and even herself.
4. Reeve mentions at one point that he managed to get away from Shinra after i think the Diamond Weapon attack, and is living with a family of some sort while still piloting the catdoll. Beyond that, i assume they had someone piloting the cat up to that point to keep tabs on the group; i swear there was even a point where Cait Sith starts talking in a western accent as a way to distinguish a new user.

the entire dev team had been jacking off to evangelion for most of FF7's development cycle. and it shows how they attempted to emulate eva's semi coherent narrative about fucked up memories and trauma. not to mention vague religious symbolism.

Probably a translation mistake. Cait Sith always talks in a Kansai accent in the Japanese version.

where do you get such an idiotic opinion from.

because eva was the first gook cartoon which used religious symbolism and memory loss, right.
