Nah, they're totally different. The protagonist of DP is a normal high school girl while Kuon is the replacement of Yui when she died in Heavenly Host.

Because the first game was a game that was written and rewritten over several different releases. The subsequent games did not have that luxury and thus are clumsy in comparison.
