also this. You cant emulate the saturn, the only way to play any of its library is with actual hardware. To top things off, just about everything saturn related is hard to find. Old and obscure vidya shit like the saturn gets me going like nothing else. Caked in dust and rose-tinted nostalgia, fringes of the consumer hardware of yesteryear ensnares my curiosity.
To sweeten the lore, the Saturn was a project born in chaos. This is the console that led to Segas demise. This is the console that Sega's hardware division rolled the dice hard on, and lost. Hard. Read up on the Saturn, theres a lot of interesting stuff on it.

siding with 41ac here, the 3ds is a great system for many reasons, but the 3d is a gimmick. In my view, you picked the wrong aspect to highlight. If anything, praise should be heaped on the 3ds for its capabilities as a pocket-sized option for retro emulation. Integrated controller, decent screens, decent battery life, hax, availability. If you dont mind skipping out on 3DS titles, and dont mind being restrited to DS-and-down, a DS Lite with an R4 or similar flashcart is a great way to go.
To answer OP directly, I would go with the following options, restricted by your needs of portability:
-Stationary: Fuck you dude, use your PC, play F.E.A.R., reinstall Deus Ex, System Shock II, Sid Meiers Pirates, Mount and Blade, Vampire: The Masquerade, Diablo II, Baldurs Gate II, Mass Effect, Dead Space, Planet Coaster, Tabletop Simulator, Civilization, FTL, Dungeon of the Endless, Kerbal Space Program, Factorio… Your options are virtually limitless.
-Portable: Switch (CFW). Get a sleeve so you can easily toss it in your bag.
-Pocket-sized: New 2DS XL (CFW) or New 3DS XL (CFW).
If you go with the 3DS family, or even the DS Lite, Heres a few things that can add additional utility:
Charger mods. There are two main ways to go about this. A modded mini-usb cable (yes I said MINI, as in that fucker that plugged into your Dualshock 3). The second way is to change the charge port out to micro usb. For this, cut a micro-usb port off an old phone, then glue it on the 2DS/3DS pcb after shaving the default charge-port off. Finally, solder pin 1 and 5 to the positive and negative terminals on the board. This method requires a dremel tool and a soldering iron. If you dont have these things, nor fancy the idea of you cutting components off your DS mainboard in a shower of sparks, you can always go with the first option. It is much easier to find an old mini-USB cable and shape fit it (JAM IT IN!!!) to work with the DS charge port.
Pair either of these up with a sizable power bank and youre golden. You could spend a week in the mountains hiking during the day and playing through titles at night. Again, I reccomend sleeving your hardware, so that tossing it in your bag is worry-free. To take this concept further, and in light of the fragile nature of the top screen, I also reccomend the addition of a hard case if you are tough on your bag at times. Unfortunately nobody makes proper hard cases for the 3ds. To that end, I advise using an old tin lunch box (see pic related) and gluing layers of foam to the inside surfaces. Dont be afraid to use spacers if the box is too thicc. You can harvest suitable foam from a variety of sources, my favorite being old furniture. When all is said and done, that box is going to be lot less trouble than a top screen replacement.
