This general is for discussing all shmups/stgs (shoot 'em ups/shooting type games).

Are shmups getting more or less popular? A good amount of effort is being made in porting old titles to modern consoles (praise M2) and quite a few indie titles are getting popular (ZeroRanger, Blue Revolver, Devil Engine, etc).

What are you playing now? Getting close to that 1cc?

>Are shmups getting more or less popular?

I think the interest in STGs is pretty much the same it always has been, the community always fluctuated depending on releases. Changing the subject to the games why does ZeroRanger even have the 3 first stages? They are piss easy and the scoring is straight forward and without much room to improvements also popcorn enemies randomly shooting based on rank is shit, they should always shoot or never shoot don't make me have to check every single popcorn enemy because one of them might shoot a bullet I'm not ready for.

Oh wait, how long? Depends very much on the game. Some clears can come in a week of focused determination, some take years of casual play. I don't typically treat beating games like a job, so single-credit clears usually come after I've been playing and loving a game for a long time. There usually is a point where your attitude toward a shooter changes and you taking beating it "seriously" however.

>Name one scoring system where making one mistake doesn't give you an inferior score as opposed to a run where you never made a mistake.

You can use that logic to defend any scoring system. The problem is that it's such a massive drop in score combined with being so easy to do that it promotes the most autistic of perfectionist play right from the start with little option for casual lesson-learning. Now there are other shooters that pull off geometrically-rewarding chaining systems without being completely infuriating, because they some fair leeway in being able to "rescue" the chain after a mistake. Chaos Field, Radirgy, Raiden Fighters Jet, and Mars Matrix are some good examples of these.

>why is this bad?

Because the action tells you to play one way while the scoring system tells you to play in another. There's some gameplay dissonance going on which is usually not a sign of good game design.

Bullshit, even the ship shotypes are made around point blanking, the scoring system in Ketsui detracts nothing it only adds, play a credit in Ketsui were you stay on the bottom the entire game and see the screen get filled with enemies due to the lack of range in your weapons.

>>16645861

The game just feels like they wanted to cram as many references as they could at the cost of gameplay, the devs even ignore the scoring they had going for the bosses on the undertale reference fight. They could barely make anything hard or interesting and resorted to popcorn enemies randomly firing aimed bullets so that you don't fall asleep which can also fuck up a scoring run.

Scoring is a perfectionist endeavor. Some Cave games are more forgiving than others though, Guwange is very unforgiving, but that doesn't make it's scoring system unworthy or bad, it just suits different people.

>Because the action tells you to play one way while the scoring system tells you to play in another.

Like where? Scoring and survival play aren't going to be 1:1, that would be far too shallow. Scoring is going to put you in unintuitive and risky situations by nature.

And you haven't explain what exactly youre referring to regarding Mushi Ultra, keep in mind Ultra is not for normal humans…there are original and maniac mode better suited for most people.

I disagree, my argument is that scoring systems without much dynamic range to reward players at a range of different skill levels are fundamentally inferior in terms of game design. "Easy to play; hard to master" is what good game design is all about. Geometrically-rewarding chaining systems have a big danger of failing at the easy-to-play part, and it all predicates on how easy it is to drop the chain. Dodonpachi's enemy chaining system is basically either you ignore the system entirely or you master it, those are your only options for enjoying it.

>>16646170

>Bullshit, even the ship shotypes are made around point blanking, the scoring system in Ketsui detracts nothing it only adds, play a credit in Ketsui were you stay on the bottom the entire game and see the screen get filled with enemies due to the lack of range in your weapons.

Not quite, Ketsui's shot types are made around staying about a quarter or third above the bottom of the screen. Not point blanking.

>The problem is that it's such a massive drop in score combined with being so easy to do that it promotes the most autistic of perfectionist play right from the start with little option for casual lesson-learning.

So what, the problem is just numbers?

There is -functionally- no difference between dropping a chain in either Battle Garegga, Ikaruga, Dodonpachi or Mars Matrix. The only thing I imagine must make Dodonpachi stand out is because unlike Ikaruga/Battle games the chain bonus doesn't cap out and keeps going, but that doesn't magically mean you can't start with smaller chains and work from there. I could try to do a stage-long chain right off the bat, but that shit's too difficult so I just stick to the smaller ones.

>it promotes the most autistic of perfectionist play right from the start with little option for casual lesson-learning

Again, any scoring system does. That's what scoring systems do by design. You have to be more specific here.

>because they some fair leeway in being able to "rescue" the chain after a mistake

The difference is purely aesthetical; in Dodonpachi your entire chain drops after a mistake but in other games just a part of it may drop, however the drop in maximum scoring potential for your run is the same. How much of a problem this is depends on how frequently extends are doled out, though CAVE games usually only tend to give you two extends you can achieve with scoring max and one extra extend you find as a pick-up. Usually you only need to be good enough at scoring to get those two extends, which doesn't involve being able to perfectly play through the game.

>Because the action tells you to play one way while the scoring system tells you to play in another. There's some gameplay dissonance going on which is usually not a sign of good game design.

Scoring systems usually reward you with extra lives, which usually involve you doing more riskier stuff like point-blanking enemies in Ketsui to gain more score for those extends.

To be honest, that's just SDOJ. It was CAVE's last real shmup and they figured they'd just make the TLB bullshit difficult to give their fans something to work towards for the future, however most players just skip Hibachi in order to actually end their high-score runs with an actual clear. Most other CAVE TLB's are nowhere as close in the bullshit difficulty scale.

>Thirty-five hours a week dedicated to gaming is clinically committable. That's a full working week for most of the general population.

>You really have no ground to be pushing your 'man-up', 'try-harder' views onto other people when you've frankly gone to absurd levels to achieve those goals.

You know, I remember not too long ago getting told by a certain dumbass I wasn't the 20th best player on here because I was only good at Futari and that truly good players get good scores in shitloads of games. Now I've proven I'm perfectly capable of getting decent scores in games not named Futari and that same dumbass still mocks me for being honest about how much I love this genre and how much time I sink in. I guess I just can't win. If only I had some of that Asian "natual talent".

But seriously, you look at any Arcadia magazine, or even that Chinese leaderboard site in x91's sig, very few guys get truly stellar scores in more than 1 or 2 games. Whether you just play a few hours a day for 2 years or be like me and do 5-10 hour sessions it takes a shitload of time to get good scores in any game. You can even look at that interview with HFD where he talks about how he got to where he was wondering why he was even still going but he didn't give up because unlike that dumbass he wasn't a fucking quitter.

Sure, maybe I could play less. Maybe I could be like the scores of casuals who only care about their meaningless "1cc list" built off Original modes and 1-ALLs. Or I could be like Icarus and be mediocre at everything. Or I could be like Sikraiken and just fake a bunch of STGT scores every year. But I'd rather just be me and that entails being honest about what it takes to get good and that yes, if your best accomplishment is barely getting past DOJBL's first loop you're trash. All I ask of you is to that consider that maybe instead of playing some non-shmup or ogling at your (not sealed) game horde you instead spend that time getting better at your favorite game. But whatever, just keep deluding yourself that DOJBL's first loop is the hardest game ever made and that Futari Ultra is impossible.

Just be careful starting with Gradius. If you get really into the series you may eventually find yourself tempted to beat them sequentially, wherein you with ultimately reach Gradius III arcade version. A very dangerous obsession for someone new to the genre.

Personally I've come to the point where I don't want to even pay for games anymore, even being DRM-free isn't enough to make me put my hand in my wallet. Pretty sure DRM-free boxed would, but that's a pipedream at that point.

When I see a new indie shooter released I just can't get myself to really care. They generally with not a too bad production value considering the team size/talent involved, but they are boring to play, they have difficulties coming up with interesting patterns and the classic patterns are misused, enemy placement doesn't really get you pumped up, it feels more like a chore to clear the screen, like there was no thought put behind designing the stages. And, and that's the subject, they are almost never under $10 despite their low replay value, which I find expensive considering there are quite a few good shooters available for free.

You. How much money do you throw at them?

Hellsinker has pretty low production value but I consider it a masterpiece. Happily shelled out $40 to import it back when it was only physical.

That would be $60. Having leaderboards would go against the cheap production aspect though. Because it means having server upkeep. Even more so if the replays are also hosted by the game maker.

Servers can get pretty cheap, especially if you self host, but it's still a continuous flow of money going away.

I would argue that the exact moment it went to shit is when they had the muliti episode arc where the gang had to defend or rescue apu's 10 kids or some shit. Sure Lisa's communist shit or homer being castrated was a funny beofore but it was a disease by this point. That and the episode showcased the production teams politics that would continue to set he pace for the entirety of the IP's run to this day.
