>played PokeMMO with same friends, I enjoyed it, got Nidoking and shit, but I was hung up because with my lack of knowledge I never knew what moves to replace and had to constantly ask for help and advice
I've been advised by my friend that the DS games were quite good, so he told me to start with the Gen 2 remake and do the other DS ones and see how I go basically. But I'm not really too sure. So far pokemon has kinda left, I guess a sour taste in my mouth? I've enjoyed the unofficial shit but the only official, actual playthrough of one, Ultra Moon, I could hardly stomach due to what I found was revolting pacing. Start with either Heart Gold or Black, then play Emerald, if you don't like the franchise by this point feel free to drop it, otherwise go for Fire Red, then Platinum and finally Black 2. Red and Crystal are optional. Avoid romhacks like the plague, or at least until you beat the game said romhack is based on. The 3DS games are shit, but i really liked Moon/Ultra Moon; player customization is always great, the 3D models weren't chibi shit and the OST was fantastic. I also really liked Mizuki, her stupid flower hat is adorable, i bet she thinks it looks cool.

Nigger, they cut the fucking battle frontier and didn't incorporate both teams into the plot, HGSS took stuff from crystal (suicune, roaming beasts, kimono sisters' subquest, the guy who takes random acorns and crafts pokeballs out of them) and included the battle frontier instead of just a gimped battle tower, not to mention the pokewalker, pokeathlon and the following pokemon gimmick, ORAS didn't add shit other than dexnav an admittedly cool feature that let you acquire broken shit like bullet seed technician breloom, the useless lati@s riding which is a glorified fly TM and episode delta, which lasts a whole 30 minutes and features a shitty mary sue, they also cut the fucking game corner, never mind not being able to gamble (no one played those things, they just bought coins), their store let you acquire the thunderbolt, flamethrower and ice beam TMs extremely early, now you can only get them after the seventh gym ie when you no longer need them. In the newer games I wonder trade off those and get loads of mons, some end up being legendaries, and the mons I breed are always rare ones, like starters with hidden abilities, Larvesta, mons that are hard to find in the current generation to hand off to newbies and others, pseudo legendaries, Weather ability mons so people can start up gimmick teams and so on.
I release most of the mons I get sent in return, since most of those tend to be commons, but I feel i'm doing my part to some extent by trading people good, hard to find mons while i'm making a perfect one for a team. With Sword and Shield, my work has been nullified somewhat because they're likely going to cut a bunch of mons that can do crazy stuff with the right team supporting them, like Oricorio.
I like the random matches in these games because people of all skill levels play, unlike in showdown where only autists hang out with perfect generated mons, I feel like playing on showdown makes the game lose a lot of depth and chance that makes the game fun.

It was a fun idea back when it was something hidden, EVs weren't even properly mentioned in the game and Natures didn't directly tell you what they did either. A way to simulate each pokemon being unique. It didn't age well.
Once people figured it out, it became one of the main aspects of the game, since it's one of the few things you can "customize" on the pokémon other than the moves, abilities and held items. The player also has a surprising amount of control over it, it's easy to grind until the pokemon comes out perfect and you know when it does. Any player that actually plays RPGs to strategize and be optimal with his tactics, will pretty much HAVE to try and minmax the values or else it's just a waste for no reason.
But to me the biggest problem is it being unchangeable, if you could just change it later you'd just power through with what you had and fixed it later if it so needed. But nope, if you want to fix it later you have to do it all over again.
I remember them adding an item to change abilities of a pokemon that can have different ones, but it was so shitty to get that it was easier to just breed another one.

To get an ideal Pokemon first you need to get two parents with favorable moves, breed until the resulting pokemon inherits the required move(s), can be skipped if there are no valuable inheritance only moves,
EVs are trained with Minigames.
IVs are innate, but can be raised with xp once the pokemon gets to level 100, so it only gives the desired "genes" effect before serious pvp,
Natures are rolled into EVs, basically, a nature is an innate x2 multiplier for EVs for a single stat, but all stats get to the same cap in the end.

If it's a nature that hinders its attack or speed I may toss it if stats are noticeably bad, but otherwise natures usually don't affect the main story too much. A Pokemon has to have noticeably good or bad stats to make a difference before the post-game. I once caught an Adamant Zubat in Black 2 with good attack IVs by dumb luck. The Crobat it evolved into ended up being one of the best Pokemon I used in any playthrough.

Probably 3 (with Heroes a close 2nd), it's the closest Pokémon game to making a movie that's almost good on its own rather than good for a Pokemon movie.
