Imagine if someone broke up the map of a regular Zelda game into a bunch of tiny pieces and spread them out over a great distance that could only be crossed by train but you can't always take the quickest route because there are other trains all over the tracks and if you run into them you die instantly.

It's fantastic. I think the Boss Fights are the best in any Zelda since they work so well with this game's combat (being performed on the touchscreen).
The train rides take a while but they would be a lot worse if the music wasn't so fantastic. I'm a trainfag so I'm biased but I think it's just so damn comfy and a huge improvement over Phantom Hourglass.
That being said, there isn't really a world to explore like in the other Zelda games but you are literally bound to rails.
I think it's the only Zelda game that has the princess alongside you the whole time. That's charming. The dungeons are also fun and actually take some level of skill this time. The sand dungeon is my favorite.

It's shit, but it's not just a shit game, it's the kind of shit that's insulting at a personal level. The music is really good, the graphics are fine, the controls are OK (even though d-pad controls would have been better), it's everything else that sucks. The story is stupid (oh boy, the guy with two hats that look like he's covering a pair of horns actually has a pair of horns, what a surprise), the combat is trivial (touch enemy to kill, no skill needed), the puzzles are brain-dead, every stupid shit you do is accompanied by an unskippable animation.
But the worst offenders are the fucking train, the creepy train people, and the partner mechanic. The partner mechanic means you have to make Zelda do stuff, but instead of being an interesting mechanic it's just playing babysitter for a retard. The train is the biggest shit: you pick your route and then watch the train ride, occasionally blowing the whistle to scare away wardhogs or something like that (I can't even remember). It's tedious, but OK. Then come the demon trains, you cannot avoid them because you are on rails and they kill you in one hit, forcing you to start all over again. So you either have to sit there and autistically plan out your route to not run into them, or just hope you get lucky.
I was still willing to suffer through that shit until I was on my way to the third dungeon. After a train ride that made me want to punch Aonuma in the face I finally arrived at my destination. So I can finally play Zelda instead of Thomas the tank engine, right? No, the game give me a big Fuck You, and expects me to ride the train all the way back for some contrived story reason. We made those train rides, and you are gong to enjoy them!
TL;DR: a giant waste of the player's time, the only redeeming part is the music. Unless you are really autistic for trains just grab the OST.

BTW: In my opinion Phantom Hourglass is better simply by virtue of not having the dumb train, but that's not saying much. It still has its own shitty gimmick, so I would not really recommend that one either. The DS Zeldas are easily the worst I have played, worse than Wind Waker.
I haven't played any of the Zeldas since, so no idea if things got even worse. I was like a beaten housewife back then, crawling back every time after being disappointed, but Spirit Tracks made me finally break that cycle.

The DS Zeldas sre good games, but when compared with other (handheld) zeldas they are the less good.
Train DS can only be compared with Boat DS:
PROS:
-Zelda is your partner and follows you through the whole adventure!
-Instead of boats you ride a train!
-With patience you can now get all the train parts on your own. No internet connection required, no multiplayer BS.
-Completing mini quests unlocks new train routes which will lead to new places, more quests and more road rabbits.
-Most puzzles are about giving particular orders to Zelda.
-Maximum comfiness.
CON:
-I liked phantom hourglass central big dungeon and how when revisiting it you could choose to either collect more treasure or speedrun it.

Started playing on an emulator, and after some serious tweaking, got it working fine.
The game is fun as fuck. The super weird train theme makes it so creepy that some parts are pure nightmare fuel.
Haven't finished it yet so it might turn to shit later. Shittiest design choice has to be the mandatory train rides in no-enemy areas. Fast travel is not possible. But I still like it.
It's a basic Zelda Game with serious flaws, like all of them.
