Damn, what i wouldn't give for a game about an elite task-force fighting against the supernatural around the world, choosing what missions to take and with what team, with deep weapon and squad customization options. Jericho somewhat scratches that itch but at the end it left me wanting more.

What's a game you like in concept but that doesn't deliver?

Mercury Steam has never once made a good game. It's always been mediocre or absolutely terrible. How the hell they managed to survive after making Jericho is beyond me.

Occult XCOM with a Lovecraftian bend would be pretty cool, actually and even better if it had a WW2 expansion that reveals the organization is actually the Thule Society that was killing Jewish vampires on the Eastern Front.

>What's a game you like in concept but that doesn't deliver?

Does Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth count? Or pretty much every other Lovecraftian game to date?

It seems none of them can really nail down the atmosphere and art design. Some come closer than others, but I've yet to see an artist that can do Lovecraft's fears justice.

If it weren't for the hilt design I'd say it's closer to a medieval arming sword than a roman gladius. Still is really. A gladius is either the same width throughout except for the tip, or actually gets narrower towards the middle, and I'm pretty sure they should be shorter than that too.

Gladius is 18 to 27 inches blade length, making it longer than the forearm but shorter than the entire arm, perspective is a little weird but the pictured sword is about the length of his entire arm plus a little more, I'd say somewhere between 30 and 40 inches, which puts it squarely into arming sword territory (medieval 1handed swords)

The Magic Circle. God I wish that game had been good. When I first started playing it, I was gearing up for a 10/10 game, because it was exactly the kind of story I wanted to see told, with a unique gameplay mechanic with tons of interesting possibilities. But the story resolved very stupidly and the gameplay devolved into a big fat nothing burger

The entire concept of the game is that you're not playing a complete game. Instead you're effectively exploring the "ruins" of a game that's been stuck in development hell for over a decade while the developers of it are working on a heavily scripted trailer to get more crowdfunder money. Kind of like some nightmarish combination of Star Citizen and Broken Age. The main gimmick of the game is that because you're exploring these files through the eyes of the game's new, but incomplete protagonist, you only sort of exist inside the game at all, which means that when you die, you don't actually die, you just stop interacting with living stuff and start interacting with dead stuff instead. Also you can mess with the code of other entities.

The problem with this is that you could SEE ALL THE COOL WAYS THE CODE MODIFYING COULD HAVE BEEN USED, and even, at one point, it is actually used in an interesting way. You are presented with a lava pit, and several enemies that you can stand on top of like platforms. The enemies die when they touch the lava, and so do you, and you can't get to the other side of the pit by just dying and swimming because the other side is elevated. So you can drop the enemy into the pit, then jump on top of its dead version. There are a very, very small number of other puzzles like this, and they seem to hint at a game that could have been tons of fun to puzzle though. Additionally, several aspects of the enemies you mess with could be tweaked, such as how they move, how they attack, and who they are aligned with, which could potentially (but didn't) lead to interesting battles. Obviously sometimes it had to put barriers in your way to keep you from just making things too easy, but things got too easy anyway because you tweak these things by collecting keywords. So you could find a flying enemy, and steal its "flying" trait, and give it to another enemy, then make the enemy your ally and, if you could stand on it, fly wherever, thus completely breaking any necessity to solve puzzles because you can just fly everywhere. The narrator character (the previous protagonist of the game who never got to be the protagonist in a playable version of the game because he got scrapped) implies that this is encouraged but it makes for a really boring game experience.

continued…

34fed9  No.16626303

>>16626302

The plot also gets messed up a fair bit too. You have three characters as your central game designers, and all of them could have had some interesting interactions, and kind of do. Like, you can see even in the mishandled plot we have, that they all just want to make a cool game, but all of them have a very different idea of what that is. One is the designer of the first game, because this game is a sequel, of course. He is incredibly story-driven, and seems to think that player agency is optional and more of an inconvenience than anything. The second is his wife, who's an ex pro-gamer. Extremely focused on the gameplay aspect, and also apparently a big fan of multiplayer. This game is also apparently why their marriage is in a constant up-and-down state with soaring heights and rock bottom lows. The last character is their intern, a fan… scratch that, FANATIC of the first game. She seems to have a very hard time telling the difference between canon and fanon, and also seems to think she knows what's best for the game itself. Their interactions, what little of them you get to see, are actually pretty damn interesting. It's fascinating to see just how these ruins of what once could have been a complete story were made. No one sets out to make make something like this, but that's how it happened. The problem is that the ending is just… really really stupid.

You sabotage the demo in an attempt to just let the whole thing die, but the intern effectively stages a sort of coup, along with a bunch of fans, politely asking the developer man to surrender the IP to the fans so they can actually fucking finish the game. This provokes a long, honestly pretty sad rant from the developer man about how he watched his game die. After which the fans promptly make a mess of everything and it's up to you to hack together a real demo, and it feels like a lot of the game may have been sacrificed on the altar of this "hack together a game with all the pieces from the story" idea, which just ends up falling flat. The "game" you "design" has to be played by an AI and rated based on predetermined criteria, making it pretty easy to… well, game. So yeah, really dumb.

If they really wanted to make a happy ending to the whole affair, you should have had to find a way to get the three devs to reconcile their differences and compromise with each other

to produce a product that might not be perfect but that is COMPLETE, and you can you can kind of see that these people COULD all reconcile their differences if they tried. The dev guy was the head designer of the first game, which, by all accounts, had great gameplay, so clearly story isn't his only strength. Midway through you get to hear gameplay lady actually use a metaphorical story of why gameplay is more important than story, but the thing is that the story she uses to prove this is actually kind of a good story. And the fan intern probably had some good ideas, she just needed someone to reign her in about some of her crazier shit and make her see the reality of fanbases and their failings. Or alternatively they should have just cut off the story after the dev had his meltdown and gone with a tragic, but sadly realistic ending of "the game never gets finished and everyone just has to live with it". Instead they went with "you throw together something halfassed and it works, I guess".

As a connoisseur of fan-projects and internet-projects in general, a story about an incomplete game and how it turned out that way spoke to me a lot, but it fell so fucking hard on its face at the end that I can't recommend anyone ever play it unless they want an exercise in disappointment and wasted potential.

34fed9  No.16626305

>>16626303

oh right, I should also mention that all 3 of the main characters are EXTREMELY up their own asses, and if the game had wanted to go for a happy ending, they would have all had to be humbled somewhat. Which could have been really interesting, but again, the entire game is one big wasted potential after another so it of course didn't happen.

Unfortunately:

>lack of weapon balance with some options being kind of useless

>stealth missions

>generally doesn't get crazy enough with its mission types

>mediocre-to-bad map design, where some are colourful, but plenty are drab, and your movement around the map is usually limited, on top of the weak environmental interactions

Cool concept, but ultimately it's just a simple Java/C tutorial game sprinkled with some energy management and base building from a third person perspective. I think this sort of gameplay would be great for an Aliens game. Or a C&C first person game.

There's not much enemy variety, only like 2 common dangerous ones and 2 incidental ones that appear in very few missions.

Third-person has always been the proper perspective for a potential 3D Metroid. You simply cannot achieve the kind of deep platforming characteristic of the 2D games without an intuitive sense of collision zones robbed from the player by a first-person perspective. What's more, with the Wii they had a golden opportunity to have SIMULTANEOUS high tier shooting action and solid platforming, thanks to intuitive aiming through the lightgun. But it was all pissed away by a delusional narcissist. Now we'll probably never get another chance after all the bad sentiment created by this game, it's more shitty snail-paced FPSs from here on out.

I remember seeing the trailer and being really hyped but then finding out that the actual game felt and played very different from what was pictured. It also doesn't help that the game has this weird and silly humor and tone which doesn't work well with the plot they are trying to convey.

The whole thing is just a mess and it frustrates me because it could have easily been great with a few minor changes.

Literally which feature doesn't work? I cannot think of ANYTHING that is in the game and yet doesn't work.

>characters move like robots and can't climb over shit

The only issue with the movement is the lack of vaulting. The rest is realistic. Sprinting and then stopping isn't instant which is why you're probably asshurt with the movement and calling it robotic.

>there's a massive imbalance between new players and people who put in 600 hours per wipe

That is literally part of every survival game. Newfags start with little to no gear while people who played a lot get better stuff. What did you expect?

>FALs with no recoil and 60 round mags that kill in two shots through armor

There isn't a single automatic with the exception of the MP5 and PP-19 that doesn't have a shitload of recoil. The FALs even when mix-maxed have absurd amounts of recoil. And of course 7,62 kills quickly, most armor in the game isn't rated to stop 7,62 NATO, retard. Only high level armor can stop it.

>the gun customization, while extensive is completely retarded

The guy whose video you posted didn't even buy the game, he made the video as a shitpost, and that was years ago.

The only thing P2W in that game is the larger secure container, players have an impenetrable container on them at all times in which they can keep stuff without losing it on death.

The basic edition has 2x2 space while the most expensive one is 3x3, making it much easier to do gearless runs for money since you have 9 instead of 4 squares.

The stash space can be expanded by buying item containers in game that have more space inside than out, the keytool you get can be bought with 300k rubles (3-4 runs), the starting guns and armor are lost as easily as they are regained, the starting trader rep doesn't matter since you still have to have a certain level and transaction amount to unlock higher trader levels, and last, the tomahawk can be bought for 20k from traders.

The performance is ass and the game is incomplete, but it's barely pay to win.

The age is precisely why. It's been around so long that it's factored as an important place throughout thousands of years of history (and in one of the most important regions of the ancient world). It's been a facet of dozens of cultures, and been mentioned in the Bible. Those two facts alone mean it has great significance as a cultural landmark, simply because it was one of the few places to be truly 'famous' before long-range travel and communication were possible.

EOD guys get a free SV-98, two AKs and two SMGs, but he'll probably have an assault rifle in that situation.

In a one-on-one encounter, the naked player will be pretty outgunned, unless he either hits the EOD guy in the exposed face or carries AP ammo (which you can buy on the flea market, the best 5.45 AP ammo is 300RU a pop, can be easily bought with starter money).

Better positioning and a surprise attack can shift the odds somewhat.

If the EOD guy does die, the standard guy can then just take everything he carried into the raid, losing him his armor and gun.

So yes, the EOD guy is probably going to win unless he gets outskilled, but not for long if he's a beginner and makes mistakes that can lose him his gear.

The armor and guns are a head start, not a permanent upgrade like the secure container and the stash size, redditor whales actually fucking rebuy the game just to get that extra large container.

also pic related, the concept is really much cooler than what they actually want you to do. From having to stop every x-ty steps to justify Power characters (instead of, y'know, creating good tells for dynamic combat) and dumb puzzles involving levers and balloon switches, to the disgustingly dumb story and braindeda bosses. And it irks me cause it's as close as it gets to a 1:1 port of the vibe of the original Sonic series in 3D, unlike Adventure titles which were cool in their own way but didn't really feel like they belonged to the cartoony Sonic world.

Unironically this.

>the background is a small town, part of the rust belt, where prosperity is gone, people are getting old and losing their jobs, shops are closing everywhere and young people are leaving for better prospects somewhere else

>the premise is the protag coming back to said city because she quit uni because severe mental health problems

>yes, you read that right, degenerates, they literally threw prostitutes, muggers, beggars, drug users, etc. in the mouth of an Old One.

>theoretically the monster would be magically helping the city to not fall apart completely, the old men felt responsible to not abandon what was once flourishing and resourceful

<90% of the plot is still teenage bullshit

<the first clue that kicks the plot forward is presented right at he beginning but is ignored for days

<yes, that means hours of gameplay focused in literally nothing

<the dénouement is non-existent, the characters don't react to the massive reveal at all

<not even in a traumatized and catatonic way

<they accidentally kill the old men, go back home and proceed to live their lives as if nothing have happened

<this is presented this way because the whole "thing" of the game is the protag dealing with her own problems

<her own self-acceptance and coping with the environment is the true climax of the story, not anything going around her

>one of the best characters is the older girl who is sober and stoic as fuck

>she was a normal teenager until her mother died suddenly

>this made her father have a mental breakdown

>without a choice, she's forced into early maturity taking care of her father and everything else before completing 18 years of existence

>this makes her the "only sane person" in a group of adult children

<for some reason she still uses goth shit clothing and accessories despite said maturity

>this though could be explained, as she never completely coped with her adult reality, frequently going to uni parties to fantasize her alternate future as a bright student

<said parties are full of crazy lefties

<call me naive, but how can someone close to poverty deal with entitled rich kids ideologies?

>on the other hand, she's usually drunk as fuck and just wants to feel accepted, that's how fucked she is mentally

>as for the gameplay you can explore a small town full of possibilites

>up and down there's a lot of things to see everywhere

>characters with their own little storylines that can change completely with your actions

<except it doesn't

<you can explore mostly everything in day one but that mounts to nothing

<you can start "questlines" that will extend to future days where you'll have to talk to the same character over and over again

<and it's boring

<every single one of them

>sometimes there is something new in the map

<but the game never signals it

<that means if you want to have the full experience you'll have to explore the map everyday and most of the time find nothing new which is nightmarishly dull

<that said the whole game loop boils down to this

<fuck around the town mostly to no results

<start conversation that'll start the day main event, usually there'll be two so at least there's a resemblance of player agency

<go to next day

<hence and repeat

<also remember that there'll be no actually plot development until much later

<so it's mostly useless character building

People will say it was dead on arrival because it was made by turbo SJWs, which is a fair point. At least the soundtrack was nice. Also, the good reception that this piece of shit had amazes me to this day.
