Bigger issue is the nature of these modern remakes almost feeling "obligatory". As in they keep picking games that still hold up fine as is, rather than games that could actually use touching up. Considering it's been since, like, 2006 since the last good DaH! Game I'm fine with them bringing it back like this.

I am almost uniformly against them, the original game will always exist and every pointless remake could have been a new instalment or original design instead. Reboots are not exactly the same thing, I don't expect Destroy All Humans will follow the original game all too closely, which is good.

That said, the new games I'm most excited for are Cotton and Trials of Mana; both remakes. I guess it's because almost everything new is shit.

In strategy games, how many people on here keep getting stuck in 'builder' mode, always accumulating resources intending to someday, eventually, build a massive army to steamroll the enemy. Accumulation becomes a habit and then the objective.

HD remasters and remakes are different things. Remasters like RE2 are just inspired by the original game and their own unique thing, which is great. There's a lot of games that could do with a reimagining like RE2 got.

These days games aren't a game any more, they're a long term investment. Every game is now going to spend more of it's time on systems past it's release than the original. So you're not making a game for the PS4, you're making it for the PS5-10 with digital releases over and over. It's all part of the games as a service platform.

It's also much cheaper to make a game already designed than to have to design one.

RE does the best of both. You get the originals upscaled to new consoles and the remakes are reimaginings. They take the original game and put a new spin on it. RE2 does stuff the ps1 version would of done if it wasn't limited by it's system. RE1 remake is so good it now defines that genre.

I loved the Ocarina of Time remake for 3DS and Fire Emblem Echoes. I plan to play through the Majora's Mask remake soon.

One of the good things about remakes and remasters is that they give people who either did not complete or did not play at all certain games another opportunity to either complete or play such games. It was not until I got the 3DS version of Ocarina of Time that I finally got to complete it despite my older brother owning it when I was a kid and playing it for a while.

The further devs stray away from the original game, the less likely it is to get a proper successor. Since they're remaking Spongebob BFBB, I'd love to see a remake of The Movie Game. People shit on the movie game nowadays, and probably for good reason, but its still a comfy game. Maybe they could straight up do a remagining, but that might be too much work for an old movie tie-in game.

Doesn't matter how little shitty remakes and sequels get, doesn't matter how many garbage cookie cutter games get spewed out, doesn't matter how many customers get drawn away from a shitty game with nothing but mindless loot farming and microtransactions. AAA games have fallen into a slump they will never get out of since they have sold their soul for short term profits. AAA games will get worse and worse with less and less consumers and they won't change until the very end. Its why no matter how cancer it is, the indie and small dev team scene is what little future there is for games.

No, it's the future of everything. Taking the "safe" option by rehashing the same old shit over and over again is proven profitable, and literally every company only takes "safe" options unless they're headed by someone who is quite certainly insane. Unfortunately, all media companies aren't headed by any one person, but a board of directors that are inevitably old white men who can't understand anything but maximizing the next quarter's profits.

A lot of indie games have original ideas, even if the game sucks. Big companies tend to just stay on the safe side with the "sure things".
