The game never tells you what happened. That last cutscene is one of the few things I remember about GTA3.

Probably because he was the only decent guy in the whole game that didn't threat you like shit. It was kinda jarring to go to his place and have that cutscene where Claude just waits a while before leaving, with no trace of Donald around…

He was stabbed in the back by his ex and another guy, send to prison and only broke out because the cartel wanted to break out a guy who happened to be in the same van as him and he's wanted by the police. He probably expects to die any day so he doesn't give a fuck and he wants to get even.

They kind of ruined his character with Liberty City Stories by portraying him as an Open Cannibal and an Incompetent Politician/Businessman. The only reason he's successful 3 years later is because he stole the Fort Staunton development plans from Avery Carrington after killing and eating him.

He's an opportunistic psychopath with 0 ethics. Basically, he's the perfect player avatar for a game such as GTA, it's a shame that III is an unfinished mess.

The reason they got rid of him had more to do with a cut mission where the player would fly a plane into his building. It was given by a homeless person in Portland named "Darkel" who was cut. All of his missions were really edgy like there was one where you'd blow up schoolbusses (Which were also cut before release). The game released shortly after 9/11 so they probably didn't have time to give his character an ending. This is also the rumored reason as to why Rockstar made the Dodo so hard to fly, as in they nerfed it on purpose to avoid players flying it into buildings to mimic 9/11.

He's the stereotypical action/western hero. He doesn't really succeed by planning or tactics, but by just toughing it out. He walks into the obvious traps, he doesn't talk much, and he just doesn't seem to die when others are being slaughtered around him. And in the end he accomplishes the goal he originally had, and walks away.
