It's not about discord, it's about what discord is. It's an ready made widespread chatroom with nicknames.
Nicknames allow people to recognize you without the need to do anything, think tripfags and the like.
Chatroom with nicknames always generate circlejerks, but they're always self contained. Even sites that had chatroom usually had barebones chatrooms only a few fags used and they circlejerked.

There are two ways to play SS13, you play alone, with the deep-ass mechanics and get pissed if anyone messes with your shit, or you play to interact with other people and get into crazy hijinks. Lube is very cheap and very effective for a sprayer if you just want to have someone trown the floor on a pinch. For lethals, a chlf3+phlog spray ain't bad, but paired with teslium+doubleacid could make it better if the target's unprotected.
Basically anything works for syringes but i'd recommend Sulf+fetanyl, preferibly on a standard syringe and not a piercing or bluespace one. Chloral has been nerfed but the other, rarer and more effective/lethal brews haven't, just be sure to have cuffs and some calomel or penetic acid at hand for when you don't want to kill them. Alternatively, try some skewium.

I actually initially thought of it to be intended for chaotic high pop servers where following the chat is a pain because there's so much going on, the reporter would act as a filter so that people only see messages that are relevant to them. Like as a engineer I don't need to know every time some assistant mugs someone but I do need to make sure I don't miss any calls on the radio to repair something, and I would like to have a summary of whats going on in the station to stay in the loop. I also think the majority of the chatter would happen on the correct channels without any intervention from security/mods, if you report a crime on the public security channel its more likely to get a quick response so I think people would start using them pretty quickly, but the more people use them the more people overall will be out-of-the loop and the more need there will be for a reporter. So in summary having public department channels solves a problem which creates a problem that reporters solve.

Yes and no. There is a lot of autistic depth to the game but a lot of public servers are fucked in some way. Getting banned isn't a huge problem as long as you don't do unreasonable things. I used to play the game a lot but stopped. Just lost the desire to continue.
You'll need more than a few hours to get anywhere in it. Learning the basic mechanics takes a lot of time on its own and there is a lot to learn in nearly every job on the station.

Stuns ARE bad.
They are a crutch to help counter how shitty combat can be in SS13 most of the time and they stop development a lot since many features of the game are centered around causing, preventing or curing stuns. There's easily more content regarding them than any single other type of damage.
It's practically the same as Flash in League of Legends, a mechanic that was introduced, everyone started using it because it trumps everything else and the game started to be modeled around it.
For the purpose of game balancing, the more useful a debuff is, the shorter it should be. That's why Poison tends to be the longer lasting (automatic but delayed damage) followed by Stat Reduction followed by Slows followed by Stuns\Paralyses.
It's even more important for SS13 since any stun that lasts long enough to cuff someone means effectively a permanent Stun on them.
However, that change itself is even more fucking retarded to a point where it beggars belief anyone would even consider it a big idea.
The initial hit doesn't Stun you for 2 whole seconds (big fucking deal) but instead it applies a lot of Stamina damage to slow you down. All this does is that it's guaranteed you're gonna be wacked twice or more, there's no way an officer will miss you with the speed slow down you get.
And it doesn't even prevent the Stun, so all he has to is whack you once and then follow a slowed down traitor while keeping some distance to avoid anything melee and in a few seconds you're down on the ground anyway, to get more stuns and cuffs.
Even the new chem (as if there was any need for even more stun-reducing content in the game) will just delay the mandatory stun and reduce it's time when it finally triggers.
So you're still going to drop whatever weapon you're holding when it kicks in and at best you'll get a disarm off an officer that is expecting the stun to last 14 seconds.
Until the player base wises up and takes note that, if you don't go down in 2 seconds, you're drugged and thus it's not safe to approach you for cuffs. It's just gonna frustrate Sec Players who will have to solve it in some other way that creates another bullshit strategy for them to fix. I predict unloading Disablers after a whack with the batons and arresting someone in a StamCrit. They already take a lot of Stam Damage from the first hit, after all.
Even funnier is that we kinda solved that shit in our server once. All it takes is reducing the goddamn stun times for everything to the point that they are useful to disarm and delay but not to cuff someone and thus automatically winning you any combat. The stun baton was the only thing that kinda broke the rule as it's a tool for Sec and even then the stun was just 10 seconds, enough to make an arrest if you were fast but not even necessary if you combined it with your Disabler.
When that change was introduced, it took a while to adapt but we even got to see ACTUAL FUCKING SHOOTOUTS between Sec and Traitors, poisoning attempts and several other shit. It was bloody rare that anyone would just try some cheesy method of stunning someone for a free kill, thefts of stun batons were considered far more dangerous considering they were still powerful and thus anyone armed with one while not being Sec was handled as a traitor.
A very simple change that completely changed the dynamic of the game for the better and made for some interesting rounds.
And a few years later, there's a chucklefuck that thinks he figured it out, just delay the Stun by 2 seconds and make a ghetto-drug that makes the fucking thing unreliable as fuck for Sec too. I'm sure this will solve everything and no meta strategy will be developed to counter this bullshit with even more bullshit.

You're describing the first days and the few retards that always relied on the Baton or the Stun Gun to get shit done and never tried to be better at it.
Meanwhile, actually decent Sec was doing so fucking well with the Disablers that there were cries on the thread to nerf them instead, mostly coming from Grey Shits that were very bootyblasted they couldn't use Stun Spear + Cable Cuffs to effectively disable someone for as long as they like and valid hunt all day long.
Only real problem at the time was that, initially the Stun Baton didn't actually gave you enough time to cuff someone (it was 5 seconds, I believe) so it was bumped to 10 instead which was far more than enough, except for the shitters using VPNs or 3rd world internet that needed 4 hours for the lag to let them arrest someone.
That shit was glorious and resulted in many tense fights and a lot of new strategies for both sides and plenty of fun. The fact that it upset so many shitters that were used to babby tools to win fights with a single stun was just the icing on the cake.
