Greetings from MobiusTrip! It's been awhile and we're glad to be back on /v/ fresh after Nintendo's E3 announcement of Banjo&Kazooie entering the Smash Ultimate roster. As big fans of 3D platforming stars of old, everybody on our team was super happy about this and we decided to keep the joy train going and make a new thread.
For those unaware, A&CP is a 3D "Collect-a-Thon" platformer inspired by the likes of Banjo-Kazooie and Mario 64. The idea was proposed in a mere thread on /v/, but we ended up forming a team under the name "Mobius Trip" and have been working on this game ever since.
We've been working when we can on making additions to our build. New textures, new animations! An 80% complete tutorial stage that just needs bushes, obstacles near the end, and more enemies! Switch between camera types in the pause menu, from strafe to non-strafe camera tracking!
We're open to recruiting artists and programmers for C# language. We barely have any 3D helpers left to model, rig, and animate and need your help! It is our weakest link and in a 3D platformer is absolutely vital. Therefore please consider joining the Anton&Coolpecker team or recommend this to those you know who are skilled in 3D software such as Blender or Maya. It isn't very difficult to pick up and learn, but to work at it when you can is what our team needs as it is a time-consuming endeavor. We need dedicated members or this project will continue to decrease in productivity as without a budget, all resources (even passion) are finite. Feedback and suggestions are more than welcome so give our playable build a try and report any bugs encountered during play. Also, give us feedback on the overall gameplay you get from our tutorial stage. We have yet to implement the river platforming obstacle, but the first boss fight is now a playable WIP. What better way to test than playtesting? Give it a spin and tell us what you think!

You probably should have waited a bit, there will probably be some heavy shitposting since we got a lot of visitors from E3. Appreciate the update though. I've been checking the commits occasionally, and I tried the latest build again a couple months ago. So here's some slightly outdated critique.
I forgot some of the controls posted in the threads and didn't feel like digging up archives. There were some missing in the key config, and I didn't figure out how to get some of the keys to work. That obviously needs to be fixed so you can make it easier for people to test for you. As for keys not working, I tried in Pale Moon and figured it was that so I tried Firefox but had the same problem, I probably need to test a native build instead if they're supposed to be working. With limited controls I got stuck in the tutorial level, unable to jump far enough or even switch to Coolpecker, but I do have some comments on what I did see.
The physics are still floaty as fuck, but I'm not a vidya programmer so I don't know how you fix that. Perhaps jumping should look more like a bowl in terms of speed? Running feels funky as well, not sure what to do about that at all. Some bounce would help the animation look more natural, but the constant speed and stopping on a dime feels weird. Felt a bit floaty in the water too, but I can forgive that better than run and jump physics. I also want to mention that the enemies were a bit smaller than I thought they would be from the models posted in-thread. I think it would be a good idea to scale them up just a bit. If the idea was to make the first ones you see short, and later variations taller and bigger (like the blue bodybuilder ant), then that's something that should have been done by making the model of the short ants shorter by design, not scaling them. It looks kind of shitty not being able to see the detail as well as if they were more proportional to Anton (who is short compared to Coolpecker, but not small like the ants). It would be one thing if they were child ants or something, but I feel like there should be a standard for the size of an "adult" ant's head regardless of his height and body type for consistency and aesthetic reasons.
On the other hand, the tutorial level is looking a lot better. I checked out some of the unfinished maps too, saw some interesting stuff there.

Although one would not be able to see it from playing the game, there is a lot of code that makes a solid base for the systems of the game. Switching engines now would mean dropping all of that code, which I don't think anyone would be willing to do.

This has not been implemented, but it certainly sounds like a cool idea. The problem is we honestly lack animators and modelers right now, so implementing cool looking animations is something that's going to take a while. Which is to say, currently it's set to NEVER EVER.

I think I told this story before but hey here it goes. Here is an entire blog post about it.
I was BigDickDad and I worked on the game as a mapper, I was the only one on the project and I ended up leaving due to a number of factors. The biggest one being the team as a whole was filled with idea fags. And you guys know what happens with Ideafags and fangames. It's a shame really because this project could have been something, something else than fucking dead and earning $40 and spending it on nothing.
I think the project must have started sometime in 2015 or 2016 (I can't really recall when) where I had an interest in making a fan sequel to 7SU2, a group of us liked the idea so we all got together in rising up pad (I think that's what It was called) and started to write down some ideas, I released a proof of concept demo out to the world and it basically snowballed from there.
The worse thing to happen to a fan-game is including your own original characters and the team made way to fucking many of these, so much in fact that they started to take over the entire project (the first chapter wasn't even done at this point), and checking out the Tumblr too you can see what I mean. Meanwhile, I was trying to make the game but they wanted to change the battle mechanics too, why they wanted to do this I don't know since the original was unique in that regard.
After getting nothing done for like 8 months or so I just quit the project, I popped in every now and again to see what was up, but they still got nothing done. After words, I just ended up making my own Shitty RPG Maker game in my spare time and I already have it's first chapter out (I won't shill it here so don't worry).
It's been 3 years and they have nothing but a youtube video showing how early it is. Last time I posted something about this they actually contacted me saying the project wasn't dead, I find that hard to believe. So yea, they're still around probably lurking and never posting.

Applegreen kept the hype for the project going with his music but we all know this place is way to small to get a game with this scope going. It's sad to because I feel like I was one of the last people to give up on seeing this project finished before 2020. This idea started when our post traffic was up, GG was in full swing and content was actually produced at a reasonable rate on this board. Right now we're in a slow death/hiatus. And productivity for making a fully realized 3D collectathon game isn't really feasible.
If there's ever going to be a chance for this shit to be finished the drama/politics can't exist (which typically does when people aren't getting paid and have a motive to not quit/start shit) and that AGDG fags are busy with their own shit and the remaining community here are mainly ideafags with no idea how to work blender let alone develop a game. The best thing the AnC team could do at this point would be to get the game in a state where the work put into the current build actually motivates people to work on the game that aren't from here.

I really did need help but couldn't be arssed to learn ruby and no one else was willing to jump in except one of the other guys friends that managed whose code got the combat usable. Btw OP this is Springer! I had surgery and got in to an experimental drug trial about 2 years ago. Have some tumors still and monthly treatment but I'm alive and brain tumour is gone. So I'm still a bit blindy mcgee but much better vision and reading these days. I had probs using Slack before if you remember but without the optic nerve pressure my reading is much better so I'm happy to help in any way I can again. Upgraded my drawing set up as well.

I can't speak for everyone in the team but the two I remember being the biggest problems at the start were inter-dev drama and a lack of proper hierarchy in project coordination. Motivation is always a big problem but hardly unexpected when working for free, especially on a project of considerable scope. Assets getting lost was another pissoff which could have been resolved from the start by using a proper RCS like git.
"Drama" basically speaks for itself, we had a number of great contributors leave because of that. Mostly disagreements in how the game should be made. Which leads into my second point of a lack of proper hierarchy in coordination. When I was remaking the Coolpecker character model for example (because the original got lost) I reworked it and changed the proportions something like half a dozen times because I was getting conflicting feedback from different devs. A clear hierarchy of who is in charge of which decisions would have alleviated this, and while we don't currently have titles for positions or anything we've more or less fallen into the required roles over time which has resulted in a lot more efficient time usage. Definitely the thing that has kept us going for so long is the fact that we all get along pretty well and enjoy shooting the shit when we're not talking about gamedev.

Paragraphs and extensive dialog aren't the only way to do character depth. That being said, character depth isn't nearly as important as character consistency - you NEED your characters to have a consistent identity. Having them speak with a proper British-English style to then switch to ebonics would be fucking stupid. You should also have a sense of personality represented in their place in the story - be it simple or complex. Take, for example Boba Fett - the faggot had like 3 lines of dialogue, but is probably one of the most well-recognized characters in any piece of media ever, simply because he was a well designed character. That's what sets apart shitty characters from good ones - good fucking design that's consistent, cohesive, and strikes a chord with your audience. Even in something as simple as Star Wars, it can work.

Brevity is the soul of wit as they say. We got what we needed out of them as characters. It's a platformer, not a drama. The gameplay was the essence of the game and that's what the focus was on. More character depth isn't needed in a game like this and likely would be more of a detriment than color.

There's nothing so far that's really inconsistent with AnC. The game isn't even 10% done and you're making statements about shit that typically isn't fleshed out until the end of the development of the game.

Then why don't you actually articulate what's objectively wrong with the AnC characters instead of laboriously explaining shit people already know? Ultimately, you can't evaluate characters from a project that isn't completed yet. It's on par with claiming that Star Wars is devoid of personality while they're at the scripting phase. Boba Fett didn't work solely because of his dialogue, it's because of the setting, design, action, and overall execution. It's the overall execution that matters, not the work-in-progress ideas.
