It's less that and more that weird games just aren't safe. Big companies and insecurity just don't mix anymore, they're too scared of losing money that unless it magically got greenlit and halfway through production before they snapped out of it, it just isn't going to happen.
The devs are still part of the problem, the main problem for indies for sure. But on that side I think it's more them trying too hard, they don't have any genuine to say. So instead they try to force it and be like the games from their childhood.

Like this. Weird games need a sincere heart to them to be good. Otherwise it's just vain or empty 'Haha look at this wacky stuff!' over and over.
People don't have enough self awareness or interest in making something because they feel it should be made anymore. They just consume and regurgitate most of the time. They don't want to make a thing because it means something, they want to make a thing so they can talk about it.

Goblet Grotto (Kinda weird but still funny in a weird way)
Raccoon who lost his shape (Short and not much of a game though)
