Leading an offensive with other Stosstruppen through no man's land while artillery fire shrouds your battalion's approach, jumping between trenches while throwing explosives ahead to clear a path for regulars behind could definitely translate into interesting gameplay. Or using artillery fire at night to cover the sound of a rifle with optic firing, crawling through mud-filled craters to avoid detection and gain a better vantage point.

its not that hard to make trenchwarefare fun, the problem is no one even attempts it and instead just makes it play like a standard WW2 shooter with less automatics. it could be fun using actual tactics with your team, then advancing to the enemy trench, fucking their shit up, then actually jumping into their trench with knives, clubs or pistols. you could always throw some technology or tanks or planes or a village to break up dying in a trench all the time too.

Pretty good games, Verdun is still somewhat alive (around 200 players) while tannenberg is basically dead (50 players on average). Its a shame really, tannenberg does improve a lot of stuff but its got far less players because the devs decided to split them into 2 games. Should ahve just been a free update or maybe an expansion to verdun.

Don't forget that Hitler was messenger during WW1. One of the most dangerous roles in that war. You wouldn't even need a game that's just about shooting other soldiers but getting papers and communication across the battlefield, could be fucking brutal for sure. When I learned about Hitlers role during WW1 I gained immense respect for him, hell even when he became wounded by a gas attack he wanted to jump right back into the war, and he was frustrated to no end when Germany surrendered. It wouldn't be the main gameplay focus. It would only be a mission side-op or a new objective mid-mission. You would still shoot enemies just like in any other shooter.
As a side-op, if you chose to volunteer as a messenger, your side would get artillery support or even reinforcements. As a main-mission objective, it would be a marathon through the front lines with snipers and explosions everywhere where you would need to find cover, hide between bodies and mud, avoid barbwires, etc. Basically stealth-focused, but rather than the classic 1 man infiltration theme, you gotta stealth through the front-line slaughter.
