It has nothing to do with having pride in your work. Unless they're an indie studio, once the game goes gold it's entirely up to the publisher as to whether or not the devs will continue being paid to issue patches or create post-launch content. If development was particularly rough, they may keep a skeleton crew to put out a patch or two and then just cut them loose and move on to the next thing regardless of the end state the product is left in.

Do you expect the developers to break into the building to gain access to the devtools and then work for free to churn out patches after their contract has expired?
